Re: Joe Bonamassa Signature Wah (has anybody heard anything?)

I play guitar to hear the TONE I like.
That TONE inspires me to play better.
So how this wah sounds matters to me.
Just like Joe, he's very conscious of his TONE.
But I'm not trying to copy his tone. In fact I bought and then sold
a Marshall Jubilee, which is a big part of Joe's tone. I don't own a
TS9 pedal or Electro Voice speakers either.

I don't think there's anyone here saying get this wah because it has Joe's name on it, nor do I take anyone here to be saying it will enable you to "copy" Joe's tone (no single piece of gear could do that, nor would having EVERY piece of Joe's gear unless you also had his hands and his skills). I'm strictly an amateur/hobbyist player myself, and I haven't tried a whole big bunch of other wah pedals, so I'm in no position to tell you whether this one sounds "better" (whatever that might mean to you) than other options. I do know that the sounds I'm getting from mine are pleasing to me, and that some of the unique features this pedal offers seem worth having...

This, and Joe isn't going to pump out a piece of crap. Whatever you're buying that has Joe's name on it is going to be a quality product.

No, Joe isn't going to pump out a piece of crap. It's the wah for him right now and I bet he's very proud to be able to share it with us. But don't get your panties in a wad because someone thinks it's not right for them. There will always be a difference of tastes and opinions. It's what makes the world turn.

Heya BJJ, I've been playing for over 8 years and have been through literally a quarter ton of guitars. I'm primarily a Strat and Tele guy, but my Joe B. Les Paul is quite possibly the best guitar I have owned. The rosewood fretboard is unrivaled by any guitar I have played. Lord knows I paid enough for it. I've had it for nearly a year now and I find it to be a great compliment to the tones offered by Fender's Reissue, Hot Rod, and Thin Skin and EJ lines.

Re: Joe Bonamassa Signature Wah (has anybody heard anything?)

I got mine yesterday. It's fabulous. All the reviews above are spot-on. It has a great wide sweep, very vocal with great quack. I prefer the non-bypass setting.
Built quality is good, although I would have preferred a metal cover rather than the plastic one. However, it does have a battery compartment, which makes removing the 4 screws and the cover a thing of the past.

Re: Joe Bonamassa Signature Wah (has anybody heard anything?)

Well I finally got mine; I had to pay another $32 in customs duty to “import” it into Canada.

At first I thought my pedal wouldn’t engage with the rocker since I couldn't hear the 'click' of the switch when rocking it.

If I stick my finger up and under the rocker and press with my finger; I get the loud switch 'click ' sound letting me know the switch is engaged.

But if I use the rocker to toggle the switch, I don't hear that click sound..
So I assumed the switch didn't get engaged; I was sort of disappointed at the start.

Well it appears that it does engage.
(Yes I decided to test it with a guitar and the rocker and not just in my hands)

I'll have to play with the pedal a bit to see how it performs in the switch on/off function on my pedal board
I’m not convinced that it’s a positive toggle on/off but well see how it does in the next few days.

So on the S1 true by-pass switch.. its not labelled and not labelled in the "manual"
Which way is which; anyone figure that out yet?

I got s/n AB40J776

Mine came set non-true-by-pass. I think the switch is to the left, i.e. for true by-pass you'll have to move it to the right. Try it out by playing briefly with the cover unscrewed and switch back and forth with the Wah not engaged -- you can hear the difference quite distinctly. I prefer the non-true-by-pass setting.

I  like the non-bypass setting as well…rolls just a hair of top end off without making it muddy.

Based on a review on the Les Paul Forum I ordered one.

Re: Joe Bonamassa Signature Wah (has anybody heard anything?)

From Les Paul forum:

Hey, guys. Just wanted to let everyone know that I just had my pre-ordered Bonamassa Crybaby delivered today and just had a chance to put it through its paces. I've been a wah aficionado for many years and have owned dozens of various makes and models, including original Clydes, Crybabies et al and newer production models, such as one of the prototype Teese Picture Wahs and more recently the Area 51. I have to say that Dunlop has outdone itself on this one. This is, without a doubt, one of the best out-of-the-box stock new production wahs I've ever heard.

The sweep is wide without making you feel as if you're going to strain your ankle. The notes are ballsy and the pedal really TWISTS the notes boldly, as a great wah should. Now, I have a test that I put every wah through. I use a distorted tone and rock the wah all the way back, then start picking an open G while rocking the pedal very slowly forward until I hear the first "notch," that point where you hear the first change in the note. Still picking, I advance to the next notch and so on. An average wah has three notches. Plenty of those around. A good wah has four notches, and a great one five. This one has not less the SIX notches, spread evenly through the sweep and when doing some Sixties style wah playing, a la Hendrix or Clapton, the Bonamassa Crybaby just plain kills.

Now, minor complaints. The pedal is a trifle noisy in both the heel down and toe up position. Now, to be fair you only really notice this if you're not playing. In the heel down position, it almost sounds like a low frequency thrumming. In the toe up, it's the normal transistor type noise you hear in a lot of even the best vintage pedals. I'm also wondering if some of this could be the inductor itself. If it's not potted, that could be contributing to the noise. And if that is the case, I'll live with it, as I think a potted inductor would lose something. Of course, it may very well be potted and not part of the problem.

Joe, if you get a chance to chime in here, I'd love to know more about the inductor, as well as any other comments you might have.

Overall, this wah is a joy to play and I hope the pot holds up. Is this one specially made to be more of an ICAR clone? I have no idea, as I've not owned a new Dunlop wah in ages, so I have nothing to compare it with. It definitely does not resemble the old Allen Bradley Hot Pot.

I have an Area 51 and while it's very good, it doesn't sound like the JB. Part of that darkness you're hearing is how JB likes his rig. He also kind of annoys me in that the only way he uses it is to gently sweep it back and forth while hammering on a note. This wah is very expressive and begs to be played and played with. As for quack? This wah can quack--big time. It also gets that cat's meow tone that Clydes are known for, at least the good ones. As for my Area 51, I'm actually thinking of selling it.

Re: Joe Bonamassa Signature Wah (has anybody heard anything?)

how does everyone find the toe on/off switch..

I find that mine doesn't click on the on/off and without a light I don't know its on unless I'm rocking the pedal.

You don't feel a slight click when you engage it?

I hear and feel a very solid click if I stick my finger up under the foot pedal and press it that way

but if I just have it on the floor and use my foot,, its ever so slight of a feel.
