Topic: Leroy Powell and the Messengers

I know I've mentioned Leroy once or twice here, but this guy deserves a thread of his own.  Sometimes I think he's the reincarnation of Ronnie Van Zant, or Waylon, but on his new album he ratchets up the rock meter to full blown kick out the jams.  What kind of music is it you might ask?  Well.....hmmm...if you tossed a pint of Jack in Chickenfoot's punchbowl and recorded in a Louisiana pole barn then you might get an idea.  The Snowblind Moonshine Deathride is easily the rock album of the year and brings back fun listening.
JDawg I hope you're payin' attention.  I also think Blues Sissi will like this too.  The band's videos aren't the best, but I'll try to get some music up later.  If Joe B. manages to read this I hope he checks out the new album and asks Leroy to open for him sometime.  One of my more credible shouts.....

Ya sent me searchin' and I liked what I heard, he's definitely a throwback to a more rockin' time. I particularly liked one of his press clips that said, "Leroy Powell is so entrenched in classic rock that he makes the Black Crowes sound like Hannah Montana." LMFAO!!!

excellent find Scott, they have a great sound and the first song I heard was Gravedigger's Blues which really does remind me of Cactus and others from the 70's. He's definitely got the badassness thing going on. I've got to get the new release and then go back and check the other four.

not trying to steal your thunder Scott, this is one of the new songs from Atlantis and it is a beast. It would be one thing if the vocals were just so-so like so many other bands, however they are very soulful and the guitar is so fine. He even throws in a little Buckethead / Tom Morello thing on the lead. Where have these guys been hiding?

well I had it backwards, Atlantis is from 2010 and Snowblind Moonshine Deathride is the new release. Lovin Machine from SMD sounds like Mountain dead on.

Thanks guys for jumping in.  A little background on Leroy:

I first heard of him when he was playing guitar for Shooter Jennings and it was all outlaw country.  Check out LP's songs "Southern Comfort" and "Lonesome Blues" off Put the O Back In Country and you'll see why he was way to good for Waylon's boy.  Powell's first two solo albums were both country offerings, and although very good, it wasn't until the bluesy Paranoid that things started clicking.  I'm listening as I type to "Rearview Mirror" (off Paranoid) and it's jaw-dropping southern rock. 
In early January 2010 he formed his present band Leroy Powell and the Messengers and released Atlantis.  That album was in my top five for that year and the two songs Tres mentioned are primo stuff. 
Whiskey Myers' Firewater, released in April, was produced by Leroy and he wrote the Skynyrdish "Turn It Up" for them.  TIU also turns up on the new Snowblind release.

That picker is Johnny Stachela who left the band after Paranoid in '09.  He's fronting his own band with singer Jesse Payo that sounds pretty schweet.  Will have to start checking Johnny's progress.  Saw where he was playing with Devon Allman as well.  Thanks for the heads-up Tres.

Not that I knew Leroy Powell's music before and you're right, I like it.

Listening to my hand-picked (no iTunes genius) mixes since yesterday lol A blues mix with my favourite songs and some special mixes lol Yesterday I listened to the rock mix and the first song got into my legs lol Could be the right song to dance into 2012. Tried my best to find something good and something you don't know.

Not going to hijack my own thread, but....

Definitely Johnny plays throughout Paranoid, providing slide/2nd guitar counterpoint to Leroy Powell.  Too bad he's not a member of the Messengers.  "Slow Train" off that album is like like listening to ABB jamming with Skynyrd.
Here's another video of Johnny and Jessie Payo that reminds me a lot of Trampled Under Foot.  iTunes only has two songs of The Johnny Stachela Band and they're both awesome.  I will be getting the whole album soon.
