Re: insomnia

Have you tried not drinking and overworking. The second does it every time, the first just gives me exercise during the night. big_smile

Re: insomnia

I don't suffer from insomnia thankfully, but i have had a few restless nights lately -  for the last two weeks, our shower/bathroom is being transformed ,  - the builders tell me they should be finished within next few days, so  sleeping patterns should return ... soon!  It's looking great!

Re: insomnia

It goes with old age. Even popping two 3 mg melatonin pills I'm lucky to get 7 hours. This is why seniors like those mid day naps.

Re: insomnia

alcohol can upset normal sleep patterns. It is tough sometimes to get a good nights sleep as you get older, I have gone through that. I'm lucky if I get 6 hours, setting the alarm clock only as backup, it rarely goes off. I like the PM pain medicines that incorporate dyphenhydramine, or Benadryl to be specific. Usually just one tablet and not 2 will do the trick, but it takes about 1 to 1 1/2 hours to kick in. Warm milk is a no go for me. The good news is that everybody should sleep really well tomorrow night, turkey has a fair amount of tryptophan which helps to promote sleep. big_smile

I stand corrected on the turkey sedation phenomenon, turns out it's all the other stuff-ing.

Re: insomnia

First thing for me, is to get the notion out of my mind that I was entitled to a good nights sleep.  I lost mine the week my first child was born.  Been grumpy from lack of sleep ever since.  wink

The second thing is some kind of exercise program stuck to religiously.  For me It's HOTT yoga and walking & a hot shower. Some sort of sincere sharing with the great spirit of the universe, um what was his name? oh yeah God!, and then a read.  NO TV for me at bedtime.  Just me.

Thirdly is I've had to cut down on my drug of choice...coffee.  Even if tired, caffeine disturbs my slumber.  No coffee for me after lunch and NO SODAS.  Full of caffeine & sugar.  Sleep for me is escape AND healing.  and FOOD?

I have always done better, eating a bigger lunch or dinner and a smaller supper before 20:00 hours - 8:00PM.  I can not do sugar very well either.

Lastly, I have to set realistic goals.  It's all a balancing act.  Ambition keeps me just as awake as worry does.  Sleep deprivation will get me killed on the road, yes, but worrying about not getting enough sleep will keep me awake.  lol Hmm, maybe all I need is 5.5 hours. Naah.

Re: insomnia

As for the PM pills, no sense in taking tylenol with diphenhydramine when you can just take the diphenhydramine unless you have a headache.  You can buy it by the hundreds rather cheaply at most drugs stores if you go store brand.  Also do not think taking more than the required dose will help you sleep...it does the opposite.

Re: insomnia

For me Gary, thankfully I still sleep like a head shot Duck. However, most of my sleeping is done now on the living room couch to avoid my wife's snoring. In any case, what works for me when I'm restless is I have a small glass of red wine, Cabernet Sauvignon is best, and then I pick up something to read. I've never been much of a reader, so if I can get to the second paragraph that would be considered a tremendous feat. Happy ZZZZZZZ's.......

Re: insomnia

Jeff has a point about quieting the thinking side of your brain in order to sleep. (L brain for R handed people). That's why folks count sheep and mantras are used to keep that side of the brain busy. For me, wireless headphones do the trick. And a Tylenol (I'm a lightweight).  It certainly is stressful times and I'm sorry. Be grateful you're not suffering from menopause  big_smile  You get to have night sweats and a cranky attitude in addition to insomnia. If all else fails..lurking is OK.     Cathy

Re: insomnia

Thank goodness I don't have insomnia too often.  The occasional bout is treated with sleep inducing hot tea and melotonin for me.

Re: insomnia

For stress related insomnia, do yourself a favor and order a bottle of this.

http://www.amazon.com/Formula-Natural-R … amp;sr=8-3

I got my first bottle from my chiropractor for muscle spasms. The stuff is amazing and it's all natural, no chemicals.

If I've has a stressful day I take a 303, get into bed, turn on some of Brian Eno's ambient  stuff and take slow, deep breaths; picturing myself slowly "deflating", like a balloon, when I exhale.

I'm asleep in 15 minutes. Works every time.

Well George, no sharp elbow, but I do put my hand on her and then she'll stop...for about 30 seconds. She's also the only person that I know of that can snore while sleeping on her stomach. Usually when people snore, they really are not getting sound sleep and of course, neither does their bed partner. roll
