Topic: Sir Paul's Surprise

I was pretty young when the Beatles' tsunami hit America, but old enough even then to realize their importance to my generation.  Although the group disbanded more than 40 years ago, I still enjoy listening to John, Paul, George and yes, even Ringo's music.  They're the musical equivilent to chicken soup traversing life's highway.
Recently I've been adding to my Beatles collection from the three Anthology albums that were released in the 90's.  I've also culled interesting covers off tribute cds and revisited the Fab Four's solo efforts.  Interestingly the "find" in all this was Paul McCartney's superb Unplugged - The Official Bootleg (Live).  At first I picked up just a couple songs, but got the whole thing after finding out Robbie McIntosh was the guy playing the incredible guitar licks on it.  Paul is quite charming between songs and his voice is in fine form, but it's the song selections that are the star here.  The audience is appreciative, but unlike most live recordings, not a distraction to the listener.  All the songs are great with "Every Night" and "And I Love Her" two standouts.  "Every Night" is my favorite post Beatles McCartney song and the slowed down AILH is about perfect - I think it's better than the original off Hard Days Night soundtrack.
With Robbie on guitar there's a heavy dose of blues slinking throughout a lot of the songs.  In conclusion I want to dedicate Paul's excellent "Blue Moon of Kentucky" to my neighbor three hours away (#1Kyfan) and "Here, There and Everywhere" to my wife.

Re: Sir Paul's Surprise

Hi Curby,

Paul has always had it going on in my book..in a multitude of ways... tongue

Even after all these years of listening to the Beatles, my husband still stops in his tracks sometimes when he plays a Beatle song on guitar or is just listening and he will comment on how amazing this was or that was.  A brilliant foursome whose legacy will forever continue to make a significant impact in music!

Thanks for the links and hope you are hanging in there and some good tunes are helping you keep positive.  smile

smile  Sir Paul's Surprise has a special meaning to me.  I've aways been more of a John and George fan.  While My Guitar Gently Weeps is probably my favorite serious Beatle song.  When I was invited to a Paul concert last summer I was definately in given I never saw any of them in concert.  What a huge surprise it was for me.  I knew it would be awesome but had no idea how aweseme.  What a generous concert.  He went on for over 3 hours and played all the old Beatle songs we grew up with.  I was also endeared to him when I heard him say in an interview with Andre Gardner that his favorite Beatle song was You Know My name Look Up the Number.  That is right up there with Rocky Racoon to me!

Probably the best version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is off Anthology 3.  Just George on acoustic guitar and an extra verse not included in the original version.  Sounds like George playing in your living room.  Good stuff.
