Topic: Savannah, Nov. 20, 2011

Cathy asked for a review...

Joe Bonamassa in Savannah, Nov. 20, 2011

The concert was in the Johnny Mercer Theater (2,506 seats, including the balcony, which seemed to be closed) at the Savannah Civic Center.  I didn't see how many people were in the balcony but the main floor was almost full, but not quite.  The show started exactly on time and lasted 2:20.  I was in the eighth row, near the center.

Joe gave it his all.  The bass player played well, and seemed to really be having a good time, compared to when I saw them last year and on the Royal Albert Hall DVD.  I think they had a different drummer than when I saw them last year.  This drummer is really powerful and very reminiscent of John Bonham.

The sound quality varied.  On most loud, fast songs (for instance the first two songs of the show), there was so much high-frequency sound that I could barely hear the guitar.  "Just Got Paid" is fast and loud, but on that one I could hear the guitar.  I know that he switches amps from song to song, so maybe the bad ones were with one amp or special effect.  Or maybe the problem was with the mix.  On the slower songs the sound was good.

The choice of songs didn't seem to be as good as last year.  He didn't play his best song ("Stop").  Several of the songs were loud and fast and seemed to have no point except to showcase some flashy guitar playing.

In the middle he told a nice story about this being his first time in Savannah.  He went to an antique mall that gave a piece of apple pie with each purchase.  He bought a set of old Beatles bobbleheads (even Ringo).  He declined the apple pie.  We really appreciated he fact that he got to go out and experience the city.

No.  He did play the "Ballad of John Henry", "Steal your heart away" (the best of the night), "young man blues", and the aforementioned "Just got paid" (with a little bit of "dazed and confused" and "superstition", as usual - or is it "I ain't supersticious" - the Jeff Beck one).  Others - I'm not sure.

Added: He did play "Woke up Dreaming".  He did not play "Stop", "Slow Gin", or "So many roads".

Joe Played "Song of Yesterday" in Columbia this past Saturday night.  Stellar song...

Music is good for the Soul...

That is probably the one I mis-identified as "young man blues".

He did play "Young Man" (originally done by the Who) in Greensboro and Columbia. He uses a double neck Gibson for "Young Man".  Great rocking song....

Re: Savannah, Nov. 20, 2011

This was the 4th time I've seen Joe and probably the longest show yet. I timed it at 2 hrs. 17 min. from lights out till bow at the end. I liked the setlist, a lot of songs off the last 3 albums, and 3 songs I haven't heard before. I have a partial setlist. I can't remember all the songs or the exact order though.

Cradle Rock
When Fire Hits the Sea
Slow Train
Dust Bowl
Sloe Gin
Blues Deluxe
Woke Up Dreaming
Django/ Mountain Time (Awesome, this was my fav)
The Ballad John Henry (Mind blowing sound effects on this 1)
Happier Times
Steal Your Heart Away

Encore:
Bird On A Wire
Just Got Paid

I think he played Last Kiss and Lonesome Road Blues too, but I'm not sure.

Then probably it actually was "young man blues".

I'm glad I'm not the only one who absolutely loves Joe's rendition of "Stop."  To be fair, that's probably a difficult tune to sing and play live.  No place to hide on that one.  big_smile

Glad to hear "Song Of Yesterday" is back in the setlist...I love that song, even without the help from Glen Hughes...I too like "Stop"...One of the hightlights of RAH...But, I can't figure out why Joe has never don "Black Night" live and in living color...Another great Joe B. classic...

I'm not sure if "Song of Yesterday" was played in Savannah.  Based on my memory, he played "Young Man Blues".  Someone asked if it was "song of yesterday" instead, and I said that maybe that was it.  But someone confirmed that he played "young man blues" at a couple of recent concerts, so I think it probably was "young man blues".  (I wasn't trying to remember the set list, that is just what I remembered the next day when I was asked.)

Re: Savannah, Nov. 20, 2011

I was also at Joe's Savannah Meet & Greet as well as show.

For the Meet & Greet- The Johnny Mercer staff seemed unorganized, and I honestly thought that the officer at the door was rude to a few of those who were there with a reason, not just walking up for a chance to meet Joe.  Everyone was patient though, and they were delighted to say hello to Joe, and ask for signatures, etc.   Joe is ALWAYS a gentleman.  He never ceases to amaze me.  We have such a good person in this musician we love and follow!  Joe did look/seem tired though,  and I'm sure it's an honest thing.  The man is the hardest working touring musician I think I have ever met.  His meet & greet attire was jeans and a white t-shirt, and he sported his "Warson Motors" baseball hat.  He took the time, as always with every person there at the meet & greet.  Our Joe is a gem.  He doesn't take people for granted.

I might be wrong on this one, but The Balcony was closed off completely.    Not sure why.  The balcony was roped off for no admittance during the meet & greet as well as the show. I  had arrived, and received my "above age 21 wristband" in case I wanted to purchase a drink, and realized after rolling out the Bonabanner that I had left my most used camera chip back at the hotel.  It was only a couple of blocks to the hotel, so my husband was a sweetie and went back to retrieve it.

Most folks at this show did not know about the Bonabanner though.  I was surprised.

Jimmie Brown, a street teamer from Savannah, took the pictures of our folks holding the Bonabanner in lieu of my camera chip being retrieved.

During the show, It seemed like Joe's sound couldn't come through over the rest of the band at some times.
Our seats were 5th row, center.

The Savannah crowd was slow to jump in on the Slow Train intro. But they eventually caught on...
Carmine, Tal, and Rick were having a lot of fun during this show.   cool

I took just over 600 photos of this show.  I am not sure that anyone put in for photos from this show with J&R though.  I didn't see anyone there up front for any of the first 3 songs doing photos.

Overall, I wonder if it was the mix that had Joe's sound almost drowned out.  Sometimes it came through, sometimes, it didn't.  Personally I think the best song performed for this show was "Steal Your Heart Away", excellent song, but not my Joe fave.  The sound was there, and the crowd really got into that song.

Thanks for the clarification on the ushers.  Had no idea.
Ok.  I was agreeing with you on a few prior things.
My post was from my point of view, and I'm sorry if it seemed any different.  It wasn't my attempt at taking any of your words.
I travelled from Maryland to see this show, are you possibly the pleasant person I met, that is from Atlanta?
If so, sir I enjoyed very much talking to you that night, and you have my JBXP card meant for street teaming and all things Joe.

If not, no problem.  smile  I am glad you also enjoyed the show,  as we had similar seats.

No, that wasn't me.  I sat next to a woman from Hazelhurst, Georgia who was there with her husband and two sons.  I chatted to her some.
