Yes, we asked him to open in support of Joe B at Joe Fest -- an effort to bridge the gap between the known legend of the area, and Joe. He was gracious enough to do so. Some of his set was pretty moving. Some adults where seen standing with tears streaming down their face as Doyle played "Life By The Drop"....
During that short period of time it was apparent he was a genuinely good guy. Before the weekend was over he had extended an invite for me to visit him at home in Alpine, TX. It was an offer I never had a chance to accept, but the offer was gracious anyhow.
At one point I was the "go-between" as Doyle and Joe briefly considered working together - but it was an idea that never really got off the ground. Again, my communication with Doyle was courteous, professional, and enjoyable. He was one of those guys you would have enjoyed being around -- even if it was just shooting the breeze.
His passing was an unexpected shock. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family. RIP Doyle.
