Topic: Richmond 11/13/11

No chatter for this show? No fans in the area/coming to town?  We're looking for a sports bar to watch the Ravens game before heading to the show, any locals who can make a recommendation?  We'd love to meet up with other Bonaheads if there are any out there.

Me and my buddy Tate will be there and he's a Ravens fan, not sure where we'll be hanging yet

Great, another Ravens fan? Wow, sounds like we gotta meet up with you two. We'll be leaving Charm City in another hour or two, em me at littlefeatrocks@yahoo.com if you decide on a place for the game.  Looks to be quite a few sports bars near the venue, not sure which might be showing the game since it's Redskins territory, but I think *they* play at 1 so there shouldn't be a conflict.

Are you familiar with the area? Any suggestions for a place for live music tonight?

Hi Cheri, love your mail address!  lol   cool

Try and send Vortex1 a forum mail - he lives down in those parts and can probably help you out. Hell, he'll almost certainly be there tomorrow.  wink

Re: Richmond 11/13/11

Got to meet Joe in the Meet & Greet and finally get my/his Les Paul signed. If the guitars are his children I don't mind being a foster parent. What a down to earth and humble guy. Carmine also showed up and milled around and almost didn’t recognize him without the blond wig. Took a friend from work with me and he had a couple of questions he was going to ask Joe and for some reason was speechless when he met Joe. Said next time he will carry a cheat sheet.

The set list was the same as previous shows and Blues Deluxe was in place of Song of Yesterday. Wanted to hear Song of Yesterday but the newer version of Blues Deluxe is absolutely killer.

Cradle Rock
When The Fire Hits The Sea
Midnight Blues
Slow Train
Dust bowl
You Better Watch Yourself
Sloe Gin
Ballad Of John Henry
Lonesome Road Blues
Happier Times
Steal Your Heart Away
Blues Deluxe
Young Man Blues
Woke Up Dreaming
Mountain Time
Bird On A Wire
Just Got Paid

There were no issues whatsoever with sound quality or loudness as has been mentioned from previous shows. Many thanks to the guys at the sound board as the mix was excellent between Joe, Carmine, Rick and Tal and Joe’s vocals just continue to impress me. Also no problems with folks hollering during the songs trying to get their voices heard. Had 17 people in our group and 12 had never seen Joe before and each of them while they had heard a little bit about him mostly as a guitarist all were saying that he has great vocals and sings with such heart and soul. Told them all that it doesn’t end here and to get the message out about Joe.

Joe made mention of walking around Richmond and coming across a guy who thought Joe was coming to the Occupy Richmond demonstration. Joe had a bag from Subway and the guy kept looking at the bag and said how the food wasn’t very good at the demonstration so Joe gave him the sub. Joe also said someone had told him to just remember that Hendrix and Zeppelin had played the Landmark Theatre and to not let him down. The Landmark is our version of the Royal Albert Hall and have been going to it for 40 years or so and have seen all the greats there except for Hendrix and want to say that Joe didn’t let anyone down and from the reactions of the group I was with and talking to many of the people after the show (some were speechless and just nodded) Joe is at the top of the list of must see shows and the list of admirers and new fans continue to grow.

Re: Richmond 11/13/11

Thanks for the review Tim. The blonde wigs are available any time the boys want them cool  Nothing beats sharing a show with Bonavirgins. Congrats on initiating in bulk!! The Joe effect is well known. Don't you wish you had the power to mute people like he does  big_smile  It would come in handy!  SO glad you all had such a great time and thanks for sharing!  Cathy

Re: Richmond 11/13/11

Thanks Roy for the Bird On A Wire video. The friend I took to the Meet and Greet I just sent pics to and he was asking about the guitar Joe was using and how beautiful and great sounding it was and had just finished sending him the link to Gigliotti Guitars and your video was right on time and sent it also. Hopefully will get to meet you one day.

Thanks

Tim

Re: Richmond 11/13/11

Well if I may, first let me duck, provide my Richmond review. I took along two newbies to the show and they had a great time. Personally, I may not have seen Joe as many times as some of you but......... This was my least favorite experience of all. The sound was absolutley horrible !  I wanted so bad to tap the sound guy on the shoulder and make three suggestions to him. #1 The drum kit consists of more than a kick and snare. I watched Tal hammer away all night and while the band was anywhere near its peak... never once did I hear a rack or floor tom. #2 Other than a few slow tunes Rick might as well be non-existant! Once again I could see him pounding away on the Hammond and Keys all night ....he might as well have been backstage playing to himself. #3. Carmine's Bass might as well have been burried in 3 feet of mudd. I couldn't determine one note from the next until he hit that one note that spiked a frequency that caused cracks in the walls. Which he hit mighty often I might add. I have seen JB live 6 times now and Love he and his music to death. I am as much of a supporter of him as anyone here.... and am no way  taking a shot at him or anyone on that stage. These guys are world class musicians and deserve much better than what I heard last night. I can only imagine that their stage mix is so much better than the room mix by the fun and interaction that they show on stage. If true I highly suggest a switch in postions for these engineers.

Re: Richmond 11/13/11

I am guessing that much of it is perspective and location, but I can't believe folks are posting about issues with sound (see Baltimore 11/11 posts too). My SO and I were in the second row of the orchestra at the Landmark (not the pit, just behind it) and anticipated that the sound couldn't possibly be as clear as it had been at the Hippodrome. We were pleasantly surprised, though I will agree on reflection that Rick's keys were not as prominent throughout the show as the others. While, like Cathy, I thought the entire show at the Hippo couldn't be topped, I'd already bought the tix for the Landmark and at the least we were hoping for a different set list and possibly other favorites from Joe's repertoire.  We sat upper balcony left on Fri and on the floor on the right on Sun, nice chance to compare the sounds and views.  Both shows were stellar, Tim thought it was even better our second night.  We hadn't sat that close since the Hampton Beach show the summer before, and the sound was expectedly infinitely better in the smaller, well designed theatre than the huge open hall in NH. What can I say? While it is disheartening to read that some were disappointed, Tim and I are already anxiously anticipating new tour dates so we can plan our next road trip and catch him again. We've seen Joe in 4 different states now, and it was nice to catch him at home for a full show (vs the short blues fest set) for a change, but wherever he goes, we'll be sure to follow as often as we can.

Re: Richmond 11/13/11

I have been to four shows this fall - Minneapolis, Chicago and both NYC shows. The sound has been nothing less than exceptional at all three venues. The MPLS show was the inaugural show for Joe's new PA and it sounded spectacular! At the time, I thought it was the best sounding show I've ever heard. The Chicago Theatre and The Beacon are larger theatres, with larger existing PAs - 4 hanging stacks instead of 2 -  so Joe utilized them. Every one I talked to after the shows had the same feeling I did that the sound was nothing short of amazing, especially at The Beacon. Even in Chicago, where we were seated lower far left, not centrally located like in MPLS and NYC, the sound was still excellent.

Were you in front or behind the sound board? The closer to the stage you are.... you experience the stage mix....... the futhur back you are you experience the House mix. I unfortunatley experienced the latter.

Re: Richmond 11/13/11

The group of people I was with 11 were to the right of the sound board half way back row R. Other 2 friends were there sound board left half way back row S. Had 2 more 1st balcony 1st row dead center and 2 more on 2nd balcony 3rd row back half way of center stage left. There were 3 from this group that are in bands and 4 others that play guitar for the joy of it. Heard no complaints from anyone and the first responses were amazement of Joe for those that hadn't seen him and that it was one of the best sounding concerts they had ever been to. That's the only thing I based my comments on. Sorry if things were not so great for others.
