Topic: Stairway To Heaven Turns 40

Happy belated birthday to Led Zeppelin IV which was released on November 8, 1971.

Four years after its release we still had teachers in high school requiring us to write papers on what we thought the lyrics of Stairway To Heaven meant, of course I still haven't a clue. This album kicked butt from the first song to the last.

A worthy and noteworthy milestone, but one for Other Artists.

Traditionally, when Dutch radio stations do their end of year top 1000's or whatever, the #1 spot is always between Stairway and Bohemian Rhapsody. I have always been in the Stairway camp - without any doubt one of the greatest songs ever.

....as i see's it.. Stairway to Heaven is a kind of euphemism ....like Over The Rainbow... the spiritual journey to enlightenment ...the Angel,She that awaits there...but 'she' could be meant in the Matriarchal as opposed to the Patriarchal sense!?...that goes back along way!!! ....the lyrics could be interpreted in many ways ...'if there is a bustle in your hedgerow"... if there is an incident of chaos!? ..'dont be alarmed now...its just a spring clean for the may queen' ...the May Pole is a phallic symbol ...the bands that entwine in the ceremony represent kinda the DNA, the bloodline...kinda separating the wheat from the chaff so to speak ...i could go on but would probably give George a heart attack lol! ...so shall keep my further thought to myself!  wink

Everyone is born a genius, but the process of living de-geniuses them.

From the moment this was released this track was the closing song at the Bucanneer in Sheffield in the afternoon and night. It was the best rock pub in the north then. I can't think of anything other than time gentlemen please, which is probably quite apt. Great memories from long ago. Sigh!!! roll

I was a massive Zeppelin fan and still am. Believe it or not I didn't but the symbols album for quite a few months after it came out as I was one of those who felt that III was too far away from the heaviness of I and II. Those first two albums still have a special place in my heart but I "forgave" them for III and grew to love it in the end. As for IV and Stairway, it is the definition of Iconic but didn't they nick the melody for Stairway from someone, as they did with quite a lot of their stuff?
