Topic: Divas & Whom are your favorite female Vocalists?

The recent fireworks over Adele being discussed here got me thinking what other female vocalists are favored by our membership.  I recently went though my library and this is what I found....

I had one song by Duffy that I think I got for free and ended up buying her Rockferry album.  Her Stonesish reverb soaked "Syrup & Honey" is a fine blues tune and "Warwick Avenue" is as fine a soul song I've heard recently.  The title cut reminds me alot of a bluesy Dusty Springfield - very cool!

Naturally I went through my growing selection of Amy Winehouse's genius.  I heard there's a vault of recorded music just waiting to be released.  I hope that's not a rumor.

Another I stumbled on was Arrica Rose.  She reminds me very much of a young Judy Collins and cites Tom Waitts among others as an influence.  AR does a fine cover of the Bee Gees' "Tragedy" and is someone to watch.

Lastly, Leslie Mendelson should be noted for her beautiful voice and carrying the tradition of her soul sister Carole King.

Okay...that's some of mine and hopefully some of you will share yours as well.

Re: Divas & Whom are your favorite female Vocalists?

Got to agree with you on Aretha, in IMHO simply the best female vocalist ever.  interesting you have Christina on there, whilst I think others are better, did see her live and she was very impressive. Tiny little thing, dancing and singing at full whack for 2 1/2 hours, very impressive.

Re: Divas & Whom are your favorite female Vocalists?

The best two of all time in my opinion are Aretha Franklin and Etta James. No contest! smile

I've been listening to quite a few modern soul/rock/blues singers this yearm including Beth Hart, Dana Fuchs, Samantha Fish, Meena and Layla Zoe who are all far better than anything else in the charts, and none of them divas in that negative sence but the best for me of the present lady singers is Danielle Schnebelen from Trampled Under Foot:

Duncan - I don't believe this  lol

I'd seen Curby's post and just sidestepped off to Youtube to find some TUF that showcases Danielle's incredible voice.
I found the very same clip you posted - and I'm still listening while I type this. I know she brought tears to somebody's eyes with the best ever version of "I'd Rather Go Blind" I've ever heard (Sorry Beth) at Maryport.

Here's another in a different style. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZTtwMEQ … re=related

Re: Divas & Whom are your favorite female Vocalists?

After reading some of the posts on this thread I think maybe I shouldn't of used the word diva since that's a whole different category of singing.  None of the girls I mentioned are even remotely as esteemed as Aretha or Etta.  Right now as far as blues singers I'm in total agreement with Ian and Duncan's assessment of Danielle Schnebelen - a far, far better singer than everyone else imho.
Brother Brack's list of divas was spot on and yes Aretha should be the definition of that class of women crooners.

Re: Divas & Whom are your favorite female Vocalists?

Aretha goes w/o saying, but aside from the "Queen of Soul"(the others are divas) my faves are Emmylou Harris, Allison Kraus, KD Lang, and Whitney Houston in her younger days. She was the next Aretha till she met Bobby Brown, TFB for her. Got to agree with PSmith on Dusty Springfield. Patsy Cline also comes to mind.

Re: Divas & Whom are your favorite female Vocalists?

Hmmm.........Well one that comes to mind is LeAnn Rimes. That girl can belt 'em out with a full range. Saw her with Josh Stone on Crossroads and was spellbound. Josh is pretty good also, but seems to be hit or miss when I've seen her performances. I also have to be included in the Christina Aquilera camp. Without all the production, ala unplugged, she really is an impressive singer. I have one or two others, but I don't want to get beat up for mentioning them. LOL!

Quick edit: Add Annie Lennox to any female singer list along with Tina Turner!

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Divas & Whom are your favorite female Vocalists?

I confess, i have a soft spot for both, Christina & Alicia. Missed out seeing Alicia last year. Both are on my bucket list.
