Topic: Skynyrd in a Vynyrd +Much More

I attended the 25th Annual BR Cohn Charity concert Sunday with 9 other frynds and without a doubt it was one of the best gigs I've been to in my concert career. The show opened with Carlos Reyes followed by Doobie daughter Lara Johnston. Some of you might remember her from MTV's Rock The Cradle competition. Young Lara has definitely found her groove, her vocals and stage presence have grown by leaps and bounds in the past 3 years. From there this gig went through the roof if there was a roof, the event is held on a sloping hillside under the olive trees with the vineyard in the back stage background. The Captain of space & time Leon Russell whipped everybody into a Tulsa boogie mood along with a couple of his ballads. Next up, Little Feat, who only played 4 numbers, but that's because they jammed on Fatman In The Bathtub for 20+ minutes. Following another efficiently executed set change the annual house band The Doobie Brothers rocked it hard like they always do with Jim Messina joining them for the last 2 songs. The owner of the BR Cohn Winery, Bruce Cohn, has managed the Doobs since their beginning and put this charity event together once a year to benefit a number of needy causes in Sonoma's Valley of the Moon. Time for the finale and Lynyrd Skynyrd tore the place up! Bluezman posted about a hundred pics on Facebook so I'll see if he'll post 'em up here for a visual of this fabulous day of music, food, wine, & good times. The Sat. line up included Carlos Reyes, Jeff Watson(from Night Ranger), Jim Messina, Leon Russell, & The Doobie Brothers w/ spec. guests Sammy Hagar & Joe Satriani. Fri. night they hosted a celebrity chef dinner and auction with local chef Guy Fieri. They wrap up the event on Mon. with a celebrity golf tournament. Can't wait for next year!!!

It's a must! Couldn't believe how many people we ran into that were out o towners, like from all over the country. Tix were $100.00, but they're a write off @ tax time. I'd love to be able to splurge on the $350.00 VIP seats!

Re: Skynyrd in a Vynyrd +Much More

wow, incredible lineup, I hate you Dawg lol I still have not seen Leon and he is aging quickly. I realize it's tied to the wine country, but if we ever got a show like that here I'm sure the sun would turn to blood in short order. Any chance of them putting that 20 minute Fatman up on uturd? I bet the weather was spectacular as well, glad youuns had a great time.

I'll check with Bluezman about what got video'd, he was pickin' n choosin' to conserve his battery. He's puttin' up some pics shortly and you will see me under an umbrella in the AM waitin' for the gates to open. the weather was unseasonal early, but cleared in the early PM. The drop in temperature was a blessing as it was 90-100 all week long. I went 6 years ago in 90+ weather and it made it a longer, rougher day. Tres, you oughta follow Rick up to Sonoma next year.

I'm envious.  I was just at that winery two weeks ago as part of a work conference and got the opportunity to say hello to Bruce.  Nice guy and very good wine.  Bruce was talking to us about the concert.  Gonna try to make it next year

Re: Skynyrd in a Vynyrd +Much More

Dawg,

that sounds like a tremendous event. 2 of my all time favourite bands in the Doobies and LS coupled with those other treats, wow, what a guaranteed great time.

I was devastated that the Doobies only did one German show last time around and I guess we won't be seeing 'em here again anytime soon, if at all.

That said, if these 2 bands are on the bill again next time around maybe that should be a dream target for me. Wear out my welcome with friends, catch an NFL game - somewhere - and the Doobies. I feel the beginning of a plan comin' on.

By the way, I read Johnny VZ was in the 'Krankenhaus' for some emergency surgery/treatment in the last weeks. Given that, how was the dude holding up? Mind you, theys breed 'em tough in the South........

OK Dawg, looks like a party date coming up next year. Toss a timely reminder up when the details are pertinent. We're always up for some music, mudbaths and merlot in wine country. What exactly was in the vip package?  wink

From what I recall the VIP package included besides the music, a catered lunch, 2 beverages, and reserved table seating on the terrace in the shade. The details are no longer on the website, there may have been a couple other perks as well, like not lining up 2 hours before the gates opened to get the decent seats we had. You also park on site instead of taking the shuttle. Remember it's a charity ticket come tax time.

It's a one of a kind, once a year event. They bumped it up a week this year and I've missed the past 5 years due to so many other things happening the first weekend in Oct., but it's already on the calendar for next year. This weekend, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park.....a philanthropically FREE event.
