Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

great news to hear on Mr Stow's progress, hell he may be reciting the Gettysburg Address by the time we crown a WS champion. Bravos continue to hang by a thread for the wild card, but STL is pretty hot and our pitching has not been what it was earlier in the year. SF still has a shot as well, if only they had been hitting like this back in July-Aug.

I'll cheer on your Braves. We are enjoying an early and protracted Padres spring training session here. They've brought up all the kids from the minor camps and the team is having fun. Time for spoiling other's chances! The kids just swept the Rockies. Dang team played like AAA all year so why not.  big_smile

Pitching Big Guy, pitching is what they've lacked for so long. They've been good offensively in the past, but never could hold a lead. This year is different and who knows what will happen? But I'm not going to tempt any fate here by making any predication. wink

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

thank you Mets for a miracle 9th inning win at STL. Terry Pendleton of the Braves even texted Willie Harris to thank him for the go ahead hit. Still not encouraged though, as we have to go to the Nats and then back home to end with the Phillies. Hopefully PHI will rest their best and show us a minor league pitcher or two. The bad news is that St Louis has the Cubs and Astros for their last 2 series. We don't expect much help from either of them, so just win baby, win.

Trust me that loss the Cards had will come back to haunt them.  Atlanta has to play the now hot Nationals and Strasburg will be pitching.  Don't think the Phillies will be much of a problem as they are laying low and resting starters.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

About the Phillies...they lost a very devoted fan of 80+ years, my father-in-law, who I loved like he was my own dad.  Andrew turned 90 in August and had a great life. He was a simple man who stood in bread lines during the depression and had to drop out of school to support his family when his father was injured working in a factory. He was married 65 years, they had two sons, he was the happiest person I have ever known and represented everything about the simple pleasures in life...love, family & friends, sports, music & dancing!! No wonder I loved him so much, he just loved Lawrence Welk a little more than me!  big_smile  Not to get too philosophical, but there is something really "special" about these dads of the Greatest Generation...

The Phillies clinched the division on the day he passed, two of his grandchildren were in attendance at the game that night and his namesake Andrew was wearing grandpop's favorite Phillies baseball hat! It was so touching, especially when Raul Ibanez hit a grand slam!!! (one of dad's favorite players)

The last week has been a blur so I'm not sure if the Phils are in an offensive slump or resting some key players and they are out of sync...either way there are some exciting games ahead of all of us!!  It Is What It Is...I'm not going to get myself racked up emotionally if my Phils don't win the World Series, its been a winning season and the last one my father-in-law especially enjoyed.  wink

Angela, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss and extend sympathies to you and yours. yeah, my parents forced me to watch LW every Sat night at 6PM. and now uh, in his famous accent, here's uh Sissy and uh Bobby, or something like that. Well I feel sure that Andrew will be looking down on all and still pulling for his Phils. No doubt if they do make it to the WS you can bet your last dollar I won't be pulling for the AL team. See you Mon in hot Lanta, tell Charlie to rest em all.

Brewers clinch NL Central Division Crown having waited 29 years. Can it be, could it be? Much too early to tell, but they are playing great baseball as of right now. smile

Do or die as they say Tres. Those Redbirds have always been our nemesis too.
Wait 'till next year cry the vanquished, except next year here looks rather dismal as well. I hope our departed slugger makes it in to the playoffs. A. Gonzalez has carried the Sox and earned his keep. He sure put up the numbers to justify the ginormous contract!

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Just watched the Champs finish their reign in a loss to Colorado. You would think they couldn't wait to hit the showers, but the entire Giants team took to the field in appreciation of their fans who set a new attendance record of 3.8 mil & change. That meant every home game was a sellout this year. On the way back to the dugout they tossed baseballs into all levels of the stands and waved goodbye. A touching moment came when Bochy pulled Pat Burrell from left field to a rousing standing ovation, which pretty much confirmed that today may have been his last game of a great career. A lot of players play an entire career without playing in a World Series game, but Burrell leaves with 2 rings. Thanks Pat the Bat. We didn't make the playoffs, but we achieved the alternate goal.....a better record than those LA BUMS!!! I'll take that as a tribute to Bryan Stow.

I don't care who's side you were on tonight, but that was THEE most entertaining night of baseball I've seen in many moons. The Cards were the only team to run away with their game. The other 3 were nail biters right down to the wire. First game to end was Phil/Atl, extra innings and a heartbreaking loss for ATL, and I sat through it with Dan Uggla's Mother, sister, & brother in law. They took it well and BTW, there all over the Cards the rest of the way having a lot of friends in St. Louis and Dan's Mom told me she wished Daniel had signed with the Cards instead of the Braves. What can you say about the cellar dwellers from Baltimore....FANTASTIC finish and the look on all those Sox fans faces, absolute disbelief, like the curse has been reinstated. At least nobody had to watch Papelbon the goat do his jig this time around!!! Finally, the hottest team in baseball, Tampa. Do the Yankees really wanna face them again??? On to the playoffs!!!

Well, it looked like anyones game in the 11th. We were eating in Barney's Beanery on the way to the Molly Malone gig and left before the end. Philip Sayce was well worth the drive. On to the playoffs.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Can someone please explain to me why, seeing as how there are 30 teams, the Dodgers and Nats both finish the season having played one game less than all other teams and finishing on an odd number of games? Makes no kind of sense to me.

Commiserations to the north-east, I understand that no one has ever blown a lead like the Red Sox have during September. As for the WS, I don't mind as long as it ain't them damn Yankees.  wink

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

the Atlanta Constitution this morning reads, "COLLAPSE COMPLETE". stayed up for all of it, that was a hairy ending to all 3 games. The Braves just could not beat the Phils even one game, so what would the postseason been like? same as it ever was, same as it ever was. Braves hitting decline is what ruined our september, maybe Boston's as well. I cannot and will not pin it on Freddie Gonzalez, he did all he could minus JJ and Tommy in the rotation. On to next year, that's what we always say now. They are getting drug through the dirt on ATL sports talk shows, unwarranted imo.
I think there should be a "playout" game between ATL and BOS, the loser would be crowned MELTDOWN KINGS 2011. Hats off to Tampa, what a comeback......did the Yanks throw that one away on purpose???

My hat's going off to my beloved Cards!  Unlike prior years they didn't tank again like the Braves did this year.  Philly has a very good team, but St. Louis ain't afraid of no one right now.  I like our chances.

Tres, part of me was thinking strategically we'd be better off losing to the Braves, I'd rather face you than St. Louis.  Cards LaRussa paid Charlie Manuel a compliment for playing to win when he could have taken an easier path.  My son thinks absolutely, the Yankees threw the game away, I hadn't really thought of that until he mentioned it.  He feels the Red Soxs would have done the same thing if things were reversed, they hate each other.

G Dawg, they probably had a game rained out vs. each other and didn't have an oppurtunity to make it up during the regular season. If it had an impact on the outcome of their respective divisions, which it didn't, they would have made it up today. Like I said, all that matters is that the Giants had a better year than those Fargin Doyers! The race within the race.
