Topic: Alaska

Got back Monday from my first fishing trip to Alaska and I've got to say, if you're a trout FISHinado like me, you owe it to yourself to make the trip at least once in your life. I'm grateful that I now get to cross this off my Bucket List. The fly fishing was absolutely silly, ridiculous good. I have never caught trout in these sizes and quantity like I did on the Copper River. In many cases we had to stop and rest our arm after fighting 2 or 3 fish in a row. They were that strong! The scenery was pretty fantastic as well with the bear sightings and such. Actually saw a timberwolf 30 feet away across the river. Friggin' awesome! Can't say enough about this latest trip. If I can figure out photobucket, I'll try to post pics if anyone's interested.

P.S. Good luck Rick tuna fishing.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Alaska

I have fished the Noatak twice ('95 & '04) on combined hunting/fishing trips. The only salmon species to run up the Noatak are chums, but the action on Dollys and Char was fantastic with the trout going up close to 10 lbs. We also got numbers of Grayling but they ran small with the average about 1 lb.

Someday I hope to get back. Friends have done a spring thing trolling along Prince William sound for Cohos. When you see a nice black bear, you beach the boat and go back and stalk it. Also drifting/anchoring for halibut.

I'm glad you had a great time. I have to agree that the scenery is spectacular!  smile

Re: Alaska

Sounds like a dream trip Guido! I've always wanted to fish Alaska, now even more.  I had the pleasure to fish the Necanicum once, a small wilderness river which flows to the sea in Seaside Ore. with a friend who lives there. It runs through private property for the last 10 miles so the only access is to canoe down from a State Park, then drive back to get the car. We floated down by canoe and got out to wade the good pools between the fast sections. Sea run Cutthroats, Coho, Chinook and Steelhead, all in a mix. 1 1/2  to 30+ pounds and you never knew what would be biting next. Not good for fly fishing because the banks were solid berryvine thickets in most places, or a tangle of trees and brush which sure messed up the back cast. We used  3/8 oz. roostertail spinners on 6lb spinning gear and you'd have to side or underhand cast to the spots beneath overhanging branches. Rain forest heaven in the fall, though a bit damp and rainy most days. We'd get 6 to 10 good fish each per float trip down the river in about 3 hours. We fished it 5 days straight and it was the best you could ask for and utterly beautiful. Dark forest, mossy trees, and small waterfalls down fern covered cliffs from tributaries along the way. We saw lots of deer and elk, a bobcat and an otter. I came scarily close to meeting my maker on the last day in a canoe mishap, but that's another story. Now it's time to get the tackle ready for those bluefin! smile

Re: Alaska

Love the stories guys and I'm with Jane, wish you would post some pix.  I fished in Alaska a few years ago on my nephew's 24' boat ... in the Pacific off Kodiak Island ... my favorite fishing conditions were when it was foggy, misty, & windy, it was such an adventure (tho I did get really seasick one day).  Caught a lot of salmon and had fresh fish for dinner every night (except for when we had Alaskan King Crab).  Hoping to go back next year; might like to try trout fishing this time.

Re: Alaska

Guido,

This is the best thread posted recently.  I'm not much of a fisherman, but truly enjoy reading these great posts.  Guido - I'm just plain jealous and the only thing missing from Rick's story is a commercial break.  Awesome!

You've got to watch out when the hard core fishermen and women get started.  smile Our local fishing club starts the meeting each month with the invitation, been fishing? Take the open mic!
