New Clapton CD

I didn't really care for it or his comments. 

He said Wynton was encouraging him to find his way into this thing? So was he trying to play jazz, because he didn't do it, so what was the purpose? I don't know what he was trying to do here, his guitar playing really didn't fit into the arrangements they were doing.  Jazz was forbidden?  Why? How? I didn't think they made a good match and will pass on this album.

I guess these Jazz guys are just doing this until they can get a Classical gig.

Music can be cerebral but that doesn't have to be all and end all.  I love Jazz and there is some of it that is not refined.  And what is great is you can play whatever you like, that's a big part of jazz, improv.

I'm just glad John Lee Hooker did what he did just the way he did it or I would have missed out on all his greatness
and that depth of musicality.

That being said, this album didn't work for me but you may like the difference.

I don't like this pairing at all.  Wynton's presence is too overwelming and the songs sound awful to me.  Clapton should've picked a more commercial form of jazz to test the waters.  For me New Orleans style jazz becomes redundant with one instrument (trumpet in this case).  If you want a somewhat blues/jazz/soul/funk pairing then I'd suggest Trombone Shorty's new album For True.  Shorty's got Jeff Beck, Warren Haynes, Kid Rock, Lenny Kravitz (on bass), Cyril and Ivan Neville, Ledisi (think Etta) and The Rebirth Brass Band.  Very impressive and woulda been a nice vehicle for Clapton.

I went and saw it on the big screen. This was a fundraiser designed to garner funds for Public Radio/TV and the arts at the National Theater. Big names together to draw the big spenders. I took it for what it was and enjoyed it. A one-off. Eric had no business up there with those guys but hung in and did what he had to. He played stuff he usually doesn't, they played stuff they usually don't. The arrangement of Layla was pretty cool. The encore finale with Taj was very cool. The sound in the theater was a bit off on some parts but the experience was worth the $12. I wouldn't buy the cd or dvd.

There were some things pointed out that better explain what was a bit of the problem.  "Wynton's presence is too overwelming".  It really was to me why you had to fit more into Wynton's sound and what they were doing.

And I have to say I have to agree with this, by Dave." I don't 'get' this...the licks don't seem any different...the song is just forced into the context. It was never made for anything approaching this...I don't see why we have to accept it as being a revelation or anything good.

I say this because I know as one myself I would like to see Eric be more of what might still be inside of him if it is still there.

If Jazz was it, then I would rather seem him go fully towards it and make some kind of great music with it with his skills, than what is showing here.  And even if it was bad, if jazz was truly in his heart, then I would appreciate he did what he really wanted to do.  I just think what he did here and what he said was kind of fake.  He didn't really give hardly an effort is what it looks to me. 

If he really admires Jazz, I would like to see him give it another try maybe in a different context like Curby said, or maybe with Wynton but taking some time to really work on it.  I really want to see the better Clapton and him being more creative.

Second thoughts deciding there were only two cuts I'd like to hear again let economics win out over purchase. Some may like it, I'd have got it last week but a new fridge and dryer got in the way.

I haven't seen the movie, heard the CD or DVD.  I like the music of the video footage.  Although I may have made a blanket statement of pre-approval of anything Eric Clapton does, my degree of pleasantness and acceptance of the project (regarding taste for it) is certainly open to great devaluation as much unbridled affection by me.  Certainly, I could completely agree with both you River, and Curby in the final analysis!

Regarding asking for an explanation, the degree of difference certainly indicated second thoughts and I am curious when someone changes their mind about music. It totally fascinates me and I find it very normal...just seemed like such a quick reversal to ignore prying.  NO offense was intended to anyone.  Explanation duly noted with thanks.
