Topic: Hummingbirds

I thought this was pretty cool and thought some of you might find it interesting too.
A swarm of hummingbirds at a feeder...I was sitting within two or three feet of the feeder and had hummingbirds within a foot of me at times. I've never seen more than two together at one time...I couldn't count these...guessing there were upwards of twenty at times:

Re: Hummingbirds

That's pretty cool Bill.  I love hummingbirds.  They are just one of natures miracles.
They can be pretty fearless.  At times when I have been watering in the yard, they would hoover just outside of the water stream catching the overspray just feet from me.  We have a  waterfall in the back yard that has a rock shelf in the top.  Each morning as I get ready for work I can watch the hummingbirds land on the shelf and take their morning bath.  There were about 4 of them that hang around the yard and at times have little tiffs to get the best spot.

Did you know that their little feet are only good for perching.  If they wanted to move just a couple of inches down a branch the have to take flight and reposition themselves.  They can't use their feet to walk like most birds do.

Re: Hummingbirds

Great video Bill.  Looks like it's migration time so the birds are fattening up as much as possible for the flight south.  I have a similar scene in my back yard in November & Decmeber.

Re: Hummingbirds

I'd never seen one before till I saw them fluttering at Cathy's feeders. Those little guys are cool as s***!

I'm sure the witch will want to contribute here once she sees this....and finds time to post.

Re: Hummingbirds

What a GREAT experience and video Bill. It is migration time and they are headed south to Mexico and many to the gulf shores of Texas. We don't notice them in migration because they fly in small groups close to the ground. Nice for you to furnish a refueling stop on their journey. We have a feeder too, but it services our resident pair, who nested here in a small ficus tree we have in a pot. They are very territorial and chase the other hummers away. We found the nest by accident when we noticed the dive bombing when we walked too close. Two tiny babies survived and flew away.  The nest was the size of half a hen's egg.

Re: Hummingbirds

Very cool, thanks!
I have a small family of robins living at the bottom of my garden, and often watch them feed from their feeder.

Re: Hummingbirds

Was at a friend's house last week and there must of been thirty or more humminbirds around his feeder.  There was one dominant bird that kept shooing and fighting the other birds, but when he finally flew off the other birds all sipped happily from the feeder.  He lives way out in the country and it was so quiet you could hear the buzzing of their wings.  Very cool!

Curby, there was a lot of that going on, although it wasn't one dominant bird...you could clearly see the larger birds shooing the smaller ones away...even when every station on the feeder was open.

Re: Hummingbirds

Hey Bill,

Here's some recent pictures of one of my little friends. I took these looking out my living room window. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8384830@N0 … 4186/show/

A couple of years ago, I really had a wonderful experience. I was going to clean out the Hummingbird feeder, so after removing it from the tree, I was carrying it back into the house to dump the old solution. All of a sudden I heard a loud buzzing sound and so, I froze while holding the feeder by it's wire hanger. Sure enough, a male Hummingbird decided to feed while I was holding it. I watched with amazement as the little guy backed away a couple of times like they normally do. I also could barely pick up an audible chirp that he made. And then, after about 45 seconds, he flew off. I stood there for a minute or two just thinking about what I had just witnessed. Simply amazing! smile
