Topic: Happy 75th Birthday Buddy

To mark Buddy Holly's 75th birthday a tribute album, Look At Me: Buddy Holly was released today.  Another, Rave On Buddy Holly came out in late June.  Like all tribute albums it's a bit hit and miss.  I cherry-picked seven songs off both and am pleased with them.  The ones I got are: "Oh Boy!" - She and Him, "Everyday" - Fiona Apple and Jon Brion, "Dearest" - The Black Keys, "Maybe Baby" - Justin Towns Earle, "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" Chris Isaak, "I'm Lookin' for Someone to Love" - Imelda May, "Well...All Right - Lyle Lovett.  Hard to pick a favorite, but I'm leaning with Imelda and The Black Keys.

Re: Happy 75th Birthday Buddy

Well.  I'm a bit shocked that 35 people viewed this thread and said nothing for the memory of a legend.  Buddy Holly was on the scene for two years and influenced modern music immeasureably.  In the late fifties I was a little kid living in Germany and missed the comet that was Buddy Holly.  In the seventies I thought "That'll Be the Day" was a Linda Ronstadt song.  When it was pointed out to me it was Buddy's song I started investigating and what I found has been a lifelong love for his simple songs.  In the eighties a tribute album called Not Fade Away - Remembering Buddy Holly knocked one outta the park and an album I still cherish.  These new tributes pale next to the old one, but if you look to see who took the time to play on 'em, 51 years after his tragic death, you have to "get" the history behind this rock legend.  He was just twenty-three.  Sir Paul plays on the Rave On disc and I believe owns the rights to Holly's music.  I sometimes imagine what he might have accomplished had he lived a longer life.  Believe it or not, his music was cutting edge rock music at the time and like the Beatles his journey would've evolved to the place only geniuses go.
Maybe baby some of you should watch the epic music bio The Buddy Holly Story and come back and post something for the man.  Here's some vids maybe three of you might view.......

Re: Happy 75th Birthday Buddy

Buddy Holly's influence goes a lot deeper than I think most people realise. Certainly in the UK, The Beatles took their name as a tribute to The Crickets. And look no further that Britain's first rock and rool group, The Shadows, Hank Marvin with the thick framed glasses and the bright red Fender Strat....

There's also that tremendous catalogue of songs that still resonate today, you gotta wonder what would have happened had he lived longer, how many more gems.....

When life gives you lemons; don't make lemonade.
Give back the lemons.  Why were the lemons free?  What's wrong with the lemons?
Do Not trust the lemons...

I read but failed to comment because I thought everyone would have been aware of his influence. My formative musical years were during his heyday. Simple but brilliant music.

You're right - a bit presumptuous on my part that needs correcting.

adios muchachos for a while......

Well, my favourite on that album is Stevie Nicks' version of 'Not Fade Away' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iORZ1220mJw
Just love the slide solo. Simple but very effective.
