Tomorrow is the 21st anniversary. RIP Stevie Ray.
That man was just incrediby way beyond genius, and they say this quite regulary but never oh so true in Stevie's case, he was and is still til this day, sorely missed and still admired

Stevie never really "played" music, it merely flowed from him as water flows down a stream. An amazing life cut short by such a tragic accident, Heaven must be one sweet sounding place. 
I like Blueser's idea, lets all celebrate his life tomorrow by cranking some Stevie up really loud!

I've been listening to BCC2 and Dustbowl exclusively up until about 2 weeks ago when I dusted off some old SRV CDs. For me this song sums it up:

I still regret not seeing him perform live. I've lived in Wisconsin my entire life and I had heard that he was playing at Alpine Valley. I thought about going to see him but decided against it. The concert was 4 days before my 30th birthday and at the time I had quit going to concerts and was focused on working and supporting my young family. I'll never forget when they announced that he was on board the helicopter that had crashed. He had recently turned his life around after struggling with drug addiction and I felt that he was at his peak musically. It seemed so unfair as it always does when one someone who you consider to be a good person dies young.

Count me as well. I'm driving to Illinois at one pm to see my son jump out of a plane and tonight we'll go see Mike Zito and Damon Fowler in Owensboro, Ky. Looking forward to this!
21 years...wow. doesn't seem that long ago.
I was introduced to Stevie's music 25 years ago and that began my trip into the blues. His unique sound will live forever. Thank you Stevie for sharing your talent with all of us and may you be resting in peace.
Seems like yesterday I saw SRV for the first time at the Milwaukee Auditorium. We all just sat there with our mouths hanging open the whole time he played. Had not seen or heard anything like it. And then the Alpine Valley weekend came along. We were at the Saturday night show and were not disappointed. On Monday morning news of the Sunday night accident came over the radio. We were stunned and in a state of disbelief.

I had followed his music for a couple of years but never could get to Austin or Dallas to see him.
I couldn't believe it when he showed up in my hometown of Abilene!
What a night! And so nice & humble...much like our Joe.

RIP SRV. He was a huge influence, and even though I don't sound much like him, he taught me a lot about music and life. I have him tattooed on my back.

I was 17 and living in Fond du Lac, WI. I had only been playing guitar a couple years and was more of a metalhead. My guitar teacher said he had some extra tickets to go see SRV and bunch of other blues guys I didn't recognize at the time (d'oh), but I had other stuff going on and even though I liked some of the SRV I heard on rock radio it wasn't my bag. So I passed on the tickets. I don't have a lot of regrets in life, but that's one.
I was listening to the radio the next day, WAPL - The Rockin' Apple, and the DJ (you know, back when they had actual DJs) did an hour long tribute to SRV. They played some killer songs he did in the radio studio like an improv blues with SRV on his strat and Chris Layton playing a phone book. He did a solo version of Rude Mude and to this day it's about the best I've ever heard an unaccompanied electric guitar sound. I taped the whole thing and had it for years, but unfortunately I loaned it to someone and never got it back. I wish like heck I still had that tape - it was pretty haunting to listen to because it was the day he died and you could tell the DJ was pretty upset. His voice was cracking a bit and you could tell he was getting choked up.

RIP Stevie ... miss him a lot! Just listening and watching vids brings back so many memories. Still hard to believe he's gone. I remember hearing the sad sad news, hard to believe it's 21 years ago ...
