Topic: Stealth Artists

I'm sure everyone here has encountered a promising artist or band that for some unexplained reason has never gotten the recognition they deserve.  I wish I had a dime for every review or post with the line "best artist/band you never heard of".  It doesn't seem fair when you see people like Taylor Swift garner such hideous stardom and all that cash and the broad cannot sing in key for the life of her.  The reason I throw out new music in this forum is to somehow right a wrong and give voice to all these "Stealth Artists".  Instead of going with an individual thread for less than mainstream artists I think I'll plop them here and hope everyone (Joe included) joins in.
The first artist I'll throw out is Monti Amundson.  Monti doesn't have a bunch of cool vids to market hisself, but he's produced some fine music.  He comes from the northwest and has cultivated a nice following in Europe.  His acoustic I See Trouble and electric Man On the Floor are both tasty blues offerings.

Re: Stealth Artists

One of my favorite "stealth" bands as you called them is a little power trio called Radio Moscow. They come from the record label Alive Naturalsound Records which is where the Black Keys were first signed. I'd recommend practically anything from the label but these guys are my favorites. They do the Hendrix/Cream/Blue Cheer psychedelic blues sound very well. They sound like they could have come straight out of 1970. If any of you like those bands I mentioned I'd recommend giving them a listen.

Re: Stealth Artists

Curby there are quite a few i can think of that for the life of me have not achieved some sort of recognition yet alone semi stardom, many many have slipped through the net and under the radar

Here's a few that should've had much more global recognition rather than just youtube hits, all real talent

Buddaheads   (absolutely cracking Blues driven boogie rock)
Check this out      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM6cpr4VvXA

Andy Timmons http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaVVZYOvMFY    this is just breathtaking

Stoney Curtis       http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2ni1qL3-bI   solo from 4:07 is Magnificent

Albert Cummings   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TKSf3Rd … re=related

Eric Sardinas      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMU1vOxF … re=related

Eli Cook            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1YrO9Ke … re=related

i guess you've heard of all of these Curby but what i'm saying is it's surprising the undoubted talent has given them success ?

and there are so many more like Joanne Shaw Taylor ... Oli Brown .... Virgil and The Accelerators ... Simon McBride
who are all So So Talented and should be huge really, they all put a full 100% in with the most important ingredient which is they have truly great strong Blues/Rock songs and should fill 2000 + venues, and hope they achieve that
Artists like Philip Sayce and Lance Lopez i believe are breaking into the medium sized venues now headlining

Thanks Michael and the rest of you that are adding to the list.  It's funny that Andy Timmons was mentioned since he's from where I live in Evansville, In.  My Son's golf teacher grew up with Andy and I think he's given his Dad lessons too.  I didn't know about him except in passing until the pro told me.  I've since gotten some of his stuff and am impressed by him.  The mention of VATA, Joanne and Oli really hammers home the hope of a younger generation jumping on the blues bus.  I feel in England and Europe their chances are better than here in the States.
Those artists you mentioned Mike are all very good and I feel Eli Cook is the most interesting.  His blues has an edge like Otis Taylor's and he's got that old man voice which is cool.

Another couple that spring to mind - Alvin Youngblood Hart and The North Mississippi Allstars - probably got a good following in the States but not too well known over here in the UK......thank God for the Paul Jones blues hour and Planet Rock!

The North Mississippi Allstars are great. Just listened to their newest album Keys to the Kingdom yesterday. Great album for everyone to check out.

Re: Stealth Artists

This artist is just starting out and hopefully won't go stealth.  Sena Ehrhardt's first album from Blind Pig  is not your typical blues offering.  Her Dad is the band's guitarist and I really, really like his style of playing - very riff orientated and tasty.  This guy was stealth as he's been under the radar till now.  His daughter must of grown up in those smokey juke joints, grooving the whole time and waiting.  I've gotta say the wait was worth it though as Sena has very good pipes and like Grace Potter has a sexiness about her.

I don't think that's necessarily true after BDS started touring with the likes of Govt. Mule, Jeff Beck(Davy solo), Chickenfoot, & Kid Rock/Lynyrd Skynyrd just to mention a few. I first caught wind of them through Paul in Boston after he sent Shreddy a copy of some of their live stuff which Shred busted out on the way to see Springsteen, it was the best music we heard that night. BDS has developed a strong following in the Bay Area packing the clubs they've gigged at and the only forum people I've run into are Shred, Lisa G & Scott, Bluezman, & Libby. I'm not sure, but Rpic may have made one of those gigs also. I remember the night they opened for the Mule @ the Fillmore and the Muleheads that I spoke with that hadn't heard of them were blown away especially after Davy jammed with Warren.

Re: Stealth Artists

Hmmm... I've heard of "stealth tapers", but never "stealth artists"... interesting... I guess the difference is, the tapers TRY to go undetected, whereas the artists are working hard for the opposite result... so I'm not so sure I like that label... but yeah ok I get what you mean......  tongue

There are SOOO many deserving artists I could list here.  But the one who immediately comes to mind is Mike Mizwinski (and his band MiZ, as well as his many other projects like Jam Stampede, Garcia Grass, Trippin On Nothing, The Lonesome Souls, Miz Trio, etc).  He's gotten a few nice breaks recently... Jam Stampede just opened for the Mickey Hart Band on Long Island last Saturday, and MiZ opened on a side stage for Bob Dylan & Leon Russell in Scranton a few weeks ago, and in the past he's opened for the Derek Trucks Band, Blues Traveler, Railroad Earth, Jackie Greene, Jimmy Herring, Shawn Colvin, etc.  There's a thread around here about him somewhere, started by me of course, which I haven't bumped in a while, but it's not for lack of enthusiasm... I still go see him regularly.  cool

Dude....I really like this guy! I'll be hunting his stuff down tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

And Michael, I had heard of Stoney Curtis before and liked him. Thanks for reminding me of him and I'll be hunting him down too.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

You mention Springsteen - his wife has a pretty damn good voice too and has been obviously overshadowed by "the Boss" but I've her last two albums and they're fantastic.....she certainly deserves more airplay!
