Topic: Ten Years After - Evolution

I'm nursing either a toothache or a sinus infection, am on the fourth day of a Z-Pack of antibiotics and am about to start using liquid libation to ease my pain.  Anyhoo, before that happens (so's you don't think I've lost me bean) I'd like to ask all of you this question: "When does a band's name become a liability?"  I say that because I came across TYA's album Evolution and although I think it's fantastic I know fans of the band will be turned off because Alvin Lee don't play on it.  It's the original band that played at Woodstock, but there's a new guitarist by the name of Joe Gooch.  If you give JG a fair listen on the attachement I've provided I think you'll find he ain't  half bad.  Alvin Lee's a legend, but his best days are well behind him.  If the band still has something to offer than why not find a hungry lad to step onstage.  I suppose they've kept the band's name to keep their foot in the door, but I think diehard fans will reject this change outta respect for Mr. Lee.

The new guy can play.Haven't kepty up with TYA or Alvin. So you say his best days are behind him? Would you say its been ten years after his best playin?
Maybe I shouldn't joke, have no idea on his health.
I also know when you have a high profile man like AL people may feel a bit cheated.Of course that puts a lot of pressure on the new guy,but I would gibve him a chance to win me over.

Re: Ten Years After - Evolution

I saw TYA more times than any other band in the '70's, but Lynyrd Skynyrd has far outdistanced that string by far. I'm not sure if it was Gary or whoever here blasted LS a while back as just a tribute band since Gary Rossington is the only original member left(pardon me Gary if I've got the wrong person). TYA could fall into this category even though Alvin's the only missing member. His presence was that critical to their popularity, but I would catch the current TYA next time they come through town. My opinion on both of these bands is that if their respective current members do the songs justice when they play them that's fine by me. It's great songs that stand the test of time and I still love to hear them played LIVE! In Skynyrd's defense they still release new material and some of it is damn good southern rock. I've been to shows over the past 25 years where they mix the old with the new and some where the setlist is all pre Oct. '77. Always a rockin' good time!

I was a Skynyrd fan from the getgo, but after the plane crash I guess I just drifted to other bands.  I'll take your word they're still making great music and promise to look into the newer stuff.  The odd thing for me though is how their stature has grown through the years - one of the most important bands of my lifetime.

Naaah, probably not Scott.  Journey did it and they've received a shot in the arm because of it.  If they are relevant, they will rock on.

Who Knows? we will see.

Re: Ten Years After - Evolution

Mr Alvin Lee will always be remembered as one of the late 60's/70's rock-jazz fusion speed gods...sometimes I don't think he got the credit he deserved from his efforts back then. Big RED-his Gibson Es guitar put out many many great solos....I have all of the original TYA Albums...there are lot more great songs out there besides " I'm going home"...check out SSSSH, Cricklewood green, Live, etc....
P/s the new kid is good...saw them live in a small club years ago,
original band was tight as well....unlike some older bands without their original members...

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Re: Ten Years After - Evolution

Go see em.... Joe Gooch does a credible job and Leo Lyons is a dynamo on stage, as awesome and charismatic as ever.....

Right you are Gary and again accept my apology, after a quick search I found it was Suhl that didn't care for "that joke of a tribute band".
