Topic: Sixties Recollections

I'm having trouble sleeping tonight so here I am listening to my music and typing what's on my mind.  The sixties decade was a very long time ago, but I remember it quite well - especially the music that came with it.  There are so many great artists and songs I could mention, but for time sake (I need to get back to bed) I'll just focus on one for now.  Like all the music I listened to back then nearly everything was introduced to me by my older brother.  I find it amazing all the cool bands he knew of.  From 1965 to 1968 we lived in Alexandria, Virginia and my brother C.J. hung out in the coffehouses and music barns in the D.C. section of Georgetown.  The band Love was one of the many  he turned me onto.  I remember first their self-titled first album which was very good, but it was the second, Forever Changes that I still listen to and marvel at it's timeless quality.  The album is hard to describe because it's a bundle of styles, but for me it's one of the best that came from a very fruitful period in modern music.  What got me thinking about Arthur Lee and Love tonight is they produced what I believe is one of the best anti-drug songs ever - the powerful "Signed D.C.".  My brother used to play that song alot never knowing at the time it would be his theme song thirty-five years later.

I have that album and it is a classic! I have an older sister and she got me into bands such as Jethro Tull, Cream, John Lee Hooker etc. by the time I was 10 years old......then one day I listened to an album that totally blew me away...."Are You Experienced". I've been a fan of Blues/Rock now for something approaching 45 years and can't ever see me stopping. A certain Mr Bonamassa has a lot to answer for too!!! The man is quite simply a GENIOUS!

Nice walk down the lane Curby. Those were some great songs. I love the "spaghetti western" horns in Alone Again.

The sixties..... for me, listening to the BBC, dominated by the Beatles, Stones, and my sister's  copy of "Pet Sounds".

I also got into Motown big time.... Marvin, Smokie, & Stevie W

Then, along came Jimi.... and changed me forever!

Re: Sixties Recollections

I also had a brother, older by 4 1/2 years and he too introduced me to Forever Changes, a wonderful album that I still enjoy listening to from time to time, except it's on CD now rather than vinyl and in mono. He became more of a mod with a scooter and listened to the Small Faces, the Who and Motown etc, while I became a rock music fan. The rest, as they say, is history.  smile

He did introduce me to some cool bands such as The Electric Prunes and their singles "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night" and "Get Me To The World On Time". Remember those. I think these two songs were the pinnacle of their career as they went a bit wierd after that and disappeared into oblivion.

Happy days

Re: Sixties Recollections

I feel I left my original message on a bit of a downer and further explanation is needed.  Lately I've been looking back for my musical roots.  The reason is mainly curiosity and what I've found is my brother had a tremendous influence.  If any out there think Curby's a bit manic with his music then envision that times ten and you'd have my brother Charles back in the day.
I looked up my library for the band Moby Grape and sadly found only two songs.  Looking at the album art off their eponymous first album I remember thinking these were the coolest guys and I loved their music.  Around the same time came bands like Clear Light, Blue Cheer, Jefferson Airplane, Terry Reid, Spooky Tooth, Spirit, Cactus and endless others - Love of course included.  Syd Barrett, founder of Pink Floyd was heavily influenced by Arthur Lee and another admirer was the then unknown Jimi Hendrix.
Anyhoo the reason I mention my brother is we've spoken recently and he sounded like he's working through his recovery quite well.  I'm hopeful.

Re: Sixties Recollections

There's an old saying, if you can remember the '60's, you probably weren't there! I've got more musical memories of that decade than I can list and need to beat it to work, until later peace, love, inscence burners, hash pipes, & love beads!!!

Driving around Guam when I was a squid in my psychedelicly painted rusted out voxwagon (12" behind the seat) cranked Vanilla Fudge, CCR, Stones, Tull and more on the 8 track, checking the surf and getting the high sign from everyone on the island  smile . That was it for me.
