Re: Eric Johnson on July 13th at Brixtion Redondo Beach, Calif

I finally got to see Eric live for the first time. It was an enjoyable experience despite some early audio difficulties. His mic was weak all night, though his voice isn't what brought me there. The first half guitar tone was muddy but when he broke out the black strat at the end for the last 3 songs it was all good. I was intercepted by the video police but they didn't notice I kept the camera rolling for the audio capture. wink I got an excellent clip of Cliffs of Dover where he went off with unbelievable virtuosity and some amazing cello and violin tones for over 11 minutes. If anyone wants the audio, I stripped it and will send as an mp3 clip via em link attachment. Just ask and give me a return link. It was more than I expected, well worth the price of admission!

I will be seeing Eric on August 9 at the Birchmere in Alexandria Virginia . Looking forward to hearing some material
from his new cd. I saw him at the same venue in 2006 when he played a great show. Below is a link to one of my favorite videos of Eric in 1990.

Here's the first clip I got up. Help me with the name of this cool jazzy song. Eric's bass player was exceptional.

Enjoy the gig Roy. He is pretty unique in my listening experience. I went in with a Joe comparison in mind, since his rep is as one of the premier players around. He is, but there can be no comparison. Totally different in technique and approach. His melodic runs and jazzy chording are superb. Not much of a singer, but adequate and the terrible mic coverage didn't do him any justice at all. We could barely make out his talk between numbers. I have some more video I'll get up when I have a chance. I'll post it here. The audio clip of Cliffs of Dover is amazing. Shoot me a pm with a non fb link and I'll pass it on as an mp3, or go over to JBXP where it is posted. Parts of it you'd swear he is playing with a bow. Worth every cent of the price to hear him and his group play.

Re: Eric Johnson on July 13th at Brixtion Redondo Beach, Calif

I've been a fan of Eric's since I bought "Tones" back in about '87. I've only seen his solo show once previously, back in '05, so I'm really looking forward to his MPLS show in August. Looks like Chris Maresh on bass who has played with Eric on different projects over the years. I would agree, great player in his own right. The drummer is new to Eric's band and I think his name is Wayne Salzmann.

I'm glad to see by some of the set lists I've seen that he's playing a number of tunes from his latest record "Up Close" which is exceptional, IMO. I listen to it as much as anything from Joe.

Three part series on "Up Close":

Here is a vid with another couple of songs. A new song, as yet untitled as Eric says. Vid police stopped me at six minutes but I kept rolling to capture the audio. Like a Rolling Stone at the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CLuQqp-XQ8

Re: Eric Johnson on July 13th at Brixtion Redondo Beach, Calif

Well, last nights show at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee was even more than I expected. For once, I had no camera with me and so, just sat back and marveled at the dexterity of this man's playing ability. Unbelievably, he's only one year younger than I am and regardless of how young I ever was, my fingers have never moved like that! Jazz Fusion was clearly on display n Eric's playing and music, but he did throw in a few covers such as Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" and Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?". All in all, a terrific night viewed from my third row seat. If you haven't see Eric live before, you owe it to yourself to do it! cool

Roy

P.S. Dawn and I also met a wonderful family at the show too, so that just added to the night. smile

That's where I saw him as well. We waited for and met him by his tour bus after the show along with about 20 other fans. Eric was extremely gracious and I could have had a photo taken with him as well, but unfortunately only one of us is photogenic and it certainly ain't me tongue .

Re: Eric Johnson on July 13th at Brixtion Redondo Beach, Calif

Saw him at the Birchmere and the sound was overwhelming.  He asked after the third song if it was too loud.  Told us that he had a couple of more Marshall's on the bus he could pull out! yikes   I was under the impression that Eric always played Fender but was wrong when he pulled out a LP.  That is when it got way too loud, he should stick with Strats.

Awestruck
