Topic: Songs victim to Political Correctness

Was listening to "Good Morning Little School Girl" recently and was thinking the songwriting wouldn't fly these days.  Any other examples people?  Here's mine and it happens to be my favorite Billy song....

Just like the chorus for Lou Reed's "A Walk On the Wild Side".

Re: Songs victim to Political Correctness

I know of some Pink Floyd tribute bands (not the one I go to see wink ) who shy away from performing "In the Flesh" from The Wall, because they're uncomfortable singing the lyrics:

Are there any qu33rs in the theater tonight?
Get them up against the wall!
There's one in the spotlight, he don't look right to me,
Get him up against the wall!
That one looks Jewish!
And that one's a coon!
Who let all of this riff-raff into the room?
There's one smoking a joint,
And another with spots!
If I had my way,
I'd have all of you shot!

(Of course they were always just the sentiments of a disturbed character in a story.)

Not political in nature Curby, but made me think of Billy's 'Eyes Without a Face' which I no longer hear played on mainstream rock stations. "I'll kill you and you're out there, so say your prayers", and "Turning water into wine, drinkin it down" doesn't set too well here in the bible belt. but I do love Steve Stevens extremely crunchy sound on that one. You've given me a good excuse to buy one of his greatest hits CDs.

The album to get is Billy's VH1 Storytellers disc.  It's sorta unplugged and Steve is absolutely stunning on the fretwork.  Even Billy tones things down for a very enjoyable album.  I'll send it to you if you want. Here's Steve playin' a hit song.....

Re: Songs victim to Political Correctness

I don't think any of those songs would be banned today either... they'd just slap a warning label on it. And that's fine with me.

There are a lot of raunchy songs on the airwaves today, with bits of 'em spliced out or with content you don't really want your ten year old hearing. Nickelback, Theory of a Deadman, Halestorm are three that happened to pop into my mind, but there are many others. Not to mention the deep tracks that don't make it on the radio at all. Not complaining, just making an observation.

But for my money, The Nuge's Wango Tango is probably the all-time winner in that category!

Edit: On second thought, make that Alice Cooper's "I Love the Dead."

Re: Songs victim to Political Correctness

Todays hip hop songs make these seem like childrens nursury songs. But yes, even some oldies might not fly .If Smokin. In The boys Room came out it would probably be snuffed. But then again maybe not ,I mean I hear Cypress Hill's Hits from The Bong on the radio till lol

Your rock candy baby

Re: Songs victim to Political Correctness

I don't even count rap because all it is is profanity and disrespect.  This song on the other hand is scantily clad women and power rock - a nice combination.  I wish I could use their Rockpalast version, but alas the f-bomb is used too liberally.  This one's pretty good though.

Re: Songs victim to Political Correctness

There's a part in Ray Charles's I Got A Woman that I know several women have raised their eyebrows at when they hear it: "She knows a womans place is right there now in her home" I have to remind them that it was from the 50s.  cool

"And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make"

Re: Songs victim to Political Correctness

we all know the music world is owned and controlled by MTV, - which is a scary thing, and why you get censorship like this....http://youtu.be/BYE4CVhVkhw - heaven forbid that we hear a naughty word, - but  the investment continues with so called "games" like Grand Theft Auto...

Music is an easy thing t have a go at, - ergo you get the idiots like PMRC....

Have we seen the same backlash against murder, rape and foul language on computer games? No. - Massive problem I have with my 12 year old son and war/crime games because we do not let him play them, - and the fact that he is very much in the minority is teh problem. I do not have a problem with him hearing a song with the F word or even songs like Pink Floyd's song "In the Flesh" because it has a context and is actually very much anti what it is singing about...Sorry not trying to take the debate off course, - but I have rambled off here..

To continue rambling, a recent study here showed no correlation between behavior and those violent games. Boys play at combat whether in reality or not. The real problem seen over here is the lack of physical activity resulting in childhood obesity.

The word 'faggot' from 'Money For Nothing'....you don't hear that on so many versions now.

Understanding that there are always 2 sides to a coin but unfortunately that is one report against many 100's that say otherwise, - violent games have been linked with ADHD, a quick search on Google  "connection between violent video games and attention deficit" will bring up loads. The problem is not just the violence, - that is a small part of it, and as you say may not be as bad as thought - the issue that it does bring is dissociation of reality with game.  The longer term damage looks to be around limitation of concentration and inability of the young child to develop the function of imagination, and in my personal experience the expectation of some children that everything comes easy. Either way it is a risk, - a risk that in 9 times out of 10 the parent does not fully understand, - video games have become the teenage pacifier.
