Re: Matt Schofield

Seeing as ClaptonisGod asked so nicely smile

Yesterday I travelled up to Kinross to see Matt Schofield and his band in concert. They were plaing a new venue which is in the back of a large hotel, and has many great up and coming acts like Marcus Bonfanti (next week), Vigil & The Accelorators (in December) and Ol Brown, Dani Wilde and Sandi Thom next year.

Matt has reverted back to a trio with the ever present Johnny Henderson on keys, piano (and bass) and ex Robert Cray drummer Kevin Hayes on drums.  Hayes is certainly a welcome member of the lineup and fit in every well with his clever drumming and apparent enthusiam as he mouthed the lyrics of several songs. The band played a cut from each album, before concentrating on a few songs from Heads, Tails & Aces. Sadly disaster struck during Lay It Down, shortly before Matt's lead guitar solo the sound stopped coming from his guitar!! The organ duo stylishly finished the song on his instruction, as their leader called the interval early, to get another guitar amp from their van!

Matt was not unduly concerned and during his calming cigarette told a few of us that he still had that solo inside and needed to get it out, so that's how the second set started! The second set was looser as the band relaxed and played some covers from Elmore James and Albert Collins (Black Cat Bone and Travelling South), plus Ear To The Ground and a stunning Not Raining Now before the encore of Sifting Through Ashes. British blues guitar playing at it's best. Have a good one tonight in Glasgow, Claptonisgod, there is a good write up of the show in the Scottish edition of the free Metro newspaper today so hopefully that will help encourage a good crowd.  smile

Matt's been over stateside for most of the summer. Shame if he was not near you. He'll be recording his new album in New Orleans in January. smile

Re: Matt Schofield

Well, I'm off for my first Matt show next Sunday, Feb. 13 at the Boerderij, Zoetermeer, and am enormously looking forward to it.

I know that Marco, our star photographer, will be there as the venue is hosting the first public exhibition of some of his best work!!  cool

Andre (and special guest) are also coming - anyone else, perhaps one or more of our ladies?

Re: Matt Schofield

A great night of music with music friends. To be perfectly honest, a lot of what Matt plays is not exactly my bag, but the rest of it sure is. I can't better Greenose's review above, so I won't try. Three excellent musicians, incredibly tight, some stunning guitar work and by no means least, Matt's vocals! This guy is one hell of a blues singer! I highly recommend seeing him if appears near you. He told me that he will be doing a number of US festivals in the summer.

Some, including Hagerstown, Md. are already listed here - http://www.mattschofield.net/shows.html

Sounds like a grand time. I can see why you were frowning after being dragged away from that sandwich George.  tongue What was all that haze? Was that one of those "special" bars there?  lol

It is so great to see "the gang" in the pics. Big congrats to Marco for his show. Nice job on the vids. You're becoming an ace recorder! Thanks for all the hard work.  C

Re: Matt Schofield

Matt has a new CD out on 6th June in UK/Europe/RoW and 14th June in USA/Canada. You can hear snatches of the tracks here and despite their brevity, they certainly give a taste of Matt's wonderful tone and playing.

Matt is touring extensively in Europe and the USA this year, where he's already made many new fans over the last year. You must try to see him if he's anywhere near you. The dates and venues are here.

Well, I am happy to report that he did have copies of the new CD with him on Sat....George was able to score a couple of copies and (I assume) get them autographed, as was I.

Having heard an earlier Matt Schofield disc back when I'd first been bit by the BonamassaBug...I thought he was a little too "jazzy" for my taste, but a few minutes into his blazing set, I was instantly converted.  His tone was phenomenal, his note choices impeccable, and the band (Jonny H. on keys/bass keys...wow) and Hayes supported him with a rock-solid foundation.  Played a number of songs off the new album which were really good, and a very long, cool re-working of "Black Cat Bone".   Met Matt and the guys after their set and had a nice chat with them.   Will definitely look for a full night from them if one is reasonably accessible in the near future.  I think many of you who love Joe and have not heard Matt should seek some out and make your own conclusions.

Re: Matt Schofield

I saw Matt live for the first time yesterday and I didn't know that much about him beforehand apart from a few youtube clips. I have to say I became a fan yesterday. Fantastic guy and a great musician, just like the rest of the band as well!

Re: Matt Schofield

I'm still amazed that his keyboard player handles bass and keys. Stunning. My roomie is such a huge fan that he came home from Hagerstown and ordered a 2-rock(sp?) amp. I like the first CD better than the 2nd, but both are great. I like his previous drummer better. Such is life. Cathy
