Fair warning, this review is coming to you from a very different Sandy Girl than I was prior to yesterday and last night ... so many dreams came true for me it was rather overwhelming and first let me say how grateful I am to Rick for hosting me in San Diego, procuring our front row center tickets, AND giving me the opportunity to meet Joe for the first time, as well as all the other members of the band!
My worries about being shy vanished as I stood in line at the meet and greet ... I had purchased BCC2 just prior and was able to get it signed by all 4 guys ... and Jason Bonham even knew where Shreveport was, said he had played there with Foreigner! Initially, it appeared Joe was not coming out for the meet and greet ... after a couple of forum friends had gone to a lot of trouble to make sure I had beautiful frameable pix of Joe in action to be signed (I know you're not surprised about the kindness of forum friends, again I am so appreciative of them!!). I was one very happy girl when Joe walked out ... he's just like everyone has said, friendly, approachable, down to earth, and has a memory like an elephant, though I suspect my name would be easy for him to remember ... all the guys were friendly, Glenn and Jason being the most talkative.
After that I was pretty much floating on air all night, as were Rick & Helen! We had a lovely pre-show dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe and finally ... time for the BIG SHOW. I never dreamed BCC would tour in the US, thought for sure I would have to cross the pond to see them and was prepared to do that ... so a big thank you to all involved in making the U.S. tour happen! Did I mention FRONT ROW CENTER!!?? OMG, I wish all of you could have seen the smiles and happiness exuded by all the band members, but especially Joe and Glenn as front men. The chemistry is amazing to witness, they love each other, love playing together, and THEY WERE ON FIRE!!! There were moments when I thought Glenn might cry and at one point he and Joe hugged at the end of a song.
Joe was on top of his game, as always, and wowed us with his playing, his stage presence, his moves (he almost does the alligator thing, he can go LOW DOWN!), and his singing. Joe's voice was as strong as I've ever heard it ... Hadrian's Wall was a really special treat, as well as Song of Yesterday. The audience responded strongly to Joe and again, you could feel the love in that theatre! He was like a kid, just playing with all he had to give and there was a different feel from his solo shows.
Glenn can do that stage strut thing, he's got it down! He did a lot of interplay with the audience, both talking and coming right to the edge of the stage (at which point everyone would rush from their seats to make contact!), strutting all the way across the stage, and many times (as you can see from Rick's vids) stopping right in front of Rick's camera to wink or give a special look of appreciation. His voice sounded great, and there was a nice mix of songs from the first and second cd's, as well as BOJH, which won Joe a huge standing ovation!
Jason and Derek were also on fire and having a blast. Jason at one point received a nice standing ovation and rewarded us with a special solo post song. Derek and Jason were both visibly reacting to the audience. In fact we were so into this concert, the energy was powerful, felt by all ... and you may have already heard Joe was so overwhelmed he dropped the f bomb on stage in referring (in a good way) to the audience!
... so you might say that I enjoyed myself! This was one great and exciting debut concert. They were so excited to be playing in San Diego, as Glenn said SD was his port of entry when he first came to the US. It was really nice to interact with some of the other forum friends, such as RikEmmittFan (along with his wife & daughter), Don, Rocket, and the young lady who got her drum signed (so sorry I forgot your name!), as well as other friends of Rick's. This is not an experience I'll come down from any time soon, and I have my lovely souvenirs and memories, many many thanks to my special friends!
... oh, and guess what, we get to do it all over again tonight, in the mosh pit in Anaheim!!
Like any good postcard, I'll close with, WISH YOU WERE HERE!!! I mean that sincerely, I do hope to share future concerts with some of you!
Sandy
