Your friend is right Jane - a lot of people didn't like that decision, but I guess in this situation the state wildlife department gets to make the final call. From the sound of what I read there really weren't a lot of choices, and I think the fact that these eagles are so "famous" didn't make the decision any easier. If this was an unknown nest out in the middle of nowheres the father would have been left to deal on his own, maybe successfully, maybe not. After watching the eagles in Iowa for a while I am amazed at how much work these little guys are - probably would have been a tough job for one parent to keep these guys fed for the next few months (they are all over 6 lbs and growing fast) and the outcome probably would not have been pretty to watch. It is nice to be able to watch stuff like this - I think it helps people appreciate the natural world around them a lot more and hopefully protect it for future generations, the tradeoff being that sometimes it forces decisions to be made that not all will agree with. Life is not a Disney movie and I think it is an important lesson for a lot to learn.
