Cathy and I will be attending, though maybe missing Ana Popovic on the Friday, not sure yet. Come on Marylanders (and others nearby), this is a great little fest smack in the middle of historic Hagerstown, so I hope to see some other forum members and friends old and new there!

FRIDAY, JUNE 3 - LOTTA BLUES KICKOFF

City Central Lot, N. Potomac St. (Limited Admission) $20 in advance* and $25 at the gate.
$7 children 6-12 years old. Free for children 5 and under. Gates open at 4:00 p.m. ID Required.

Texas Blues Guitar: This is a hands-on workshop introducing the basics of single-base fingerpicking. Although not confined to Texas players, this style was made famous by guys like Lightnin' Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, To supplement the workshop, Ernie has teaching DVDs available revealing the styles of these two great Texas bluesmen. Hopefully, the participant will walk out of this workshop with some of the fundamentals of this style at his, or her, fingertips.

Jocelyn and I will be there on Saturday, but probably not Sunday. This will be our third time seeing Davy Knowles... he puts on a great show!

It will indeed be a pleasure to see you two again - who would have thunk it after our initial meeting in 100+ degree heat standing in line outside the Birchmere three years ago?  big_smile

It'll be only my second Davy show, though Cathy has seen him quite a few times. I strongly urge you both to hang on for the Sunday too and catch Joanne Shaw Taylor! That girl seriously kicks a$% and I guarantee that you won't regret it.  wink

On the 5th, my church (Tri-State Fellowship) will be hosting a Blues Sunday.  We'll be doing some contemporary Christian music with blues roots, as well as some Allman Bros (and other similar bands) jam songs.  Feel free to check out the music or stay for the service!

Nothing to say other than that this string probably ought to be kicked back up to the top of the "Other Artists" forum in case there are any other blues fans looking for something to do this coming weekend! (Who didn't already know about this event, of course.)

Right now, it looks like the heat wave will break before Friday...

Cathy and I will be there with Jimmy, her roomie. Bob (Tarus 52) and CherrieS are the only other forum members apart from D&J that I am aware of. We sure hope that some more of you can make it.

First it is too cold and blizzards, then too hot and muggy. Geez, I'll send out some of our sweet Socal Mem. Day weekend weather for alla youse back east. 45, spitting rain and blowing a gale. That will fix ya! lol (and I was outside in it barbequeing yikes  while trying to keep the fire fromgoing out! sad )

The weather has broken!  cool

We had the windows open this morning enjoying a gorgeous breeze. The "cold front" that has reached this area has dropped the temperatures by roughly 10 degrees. Mid 80's feels "cool".  tongue

The weather also looks pretty good for Hagerstown, so any weather doubters still have time to change their minds.  wink

So much to talk about, but it's late and us old folks are shattered after two days of mainly standing. For the moment, I can report that Matt Schofield stole the show for a lot of us, despite Davy being last act.

I was sorry to miss the chance to say good-bye after Davy's set, George! Yes, Jocelyn and I probably could have played our cards better for that event. Here's my review, in anticipation of hearing yours and/or Cathy's:

We really enjoyed Devon Allman, but were guarding our real estate for Davy and had to sit through an excruciating set by some trimmed-down, miked-up marching band from N'Awlins (okay, it was the Soul Rebels) who got a bunch of fellow Louisiannans (if that's the proper term, probably not) to boogey down like a bunch of maniacs for over an hour in the hot sun! Now, my apologies to the Big Easy, and I like a marching band as much as anyone (having spent a few years "in uniform" myself), but that wasn't the music I came to see. At least now I can cross Mardi Gras off my bucket list!

Anyway, our poor choice meant we missed seeing (if not hearing) Matt Schofield's set, and then Hamilton Loomis. That's the kind of stuff we came to see, and we could hear that they were putting on one heck of a show. And we heard Matt come onstage and jam with Hamilton, but... alas, the big T-shirt sales tent blocked our view of the second stage.

Davy's set was great, but standing as we were in front of his amp we caught lots of his guitar but very little of his vocals. How loud was it? Well, three fire trucks responded to a tripped alarm at the theater behind the stage, and I never heard their sirens! (My ears were still ringing on Monday!) It was pretty cool to see Paul Reed Smith onstage with Davy, but in retrospect we could have settled for being 15 rows back to see Davy's show if it meant being able to catch Matt and Hamilton... and missing the Soul Rebels' set.

CherryS, after missing you at the Chesapeake Bay Blues Fest, I was expecting to meet you at this event, but once again we must have passed like ships in the night. Maybe if you're at BCC in DC or Hot August Blues in Cockeysville we'll finally get the chance to introduce ourselves. It was good to see Carl again, though; I hope your gig was a good one. And as always, it was a pleasure to see Bob again.

We too were drained after Saturday, so we failed to return for Joanne Shaw Taylor on Sunday. But we hope to see her at some point... down the road. Anybody care to give a review of her performance?
