Topic: ZZ Top

I know, I know, everyone has been a fan of ZZ Tops for years, but I just recently really got into them!

Surely this is what rock is all about, having fun, keeping it loud and just doing what you enjoy doing, nothing fancy but these guys just ROCK.

Definately the USA's version of Status Quo, an institution, Billy, Dusty and Frank, I salute you!!!!!!! cool  cool  cool  cool

cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool  cool

Have Fun and laugh like it's your first time! You never know you might get to like it! big_smile

Re: ZZ Top

It´s never too late to discover ZZ Top: they are around in Germany end of the month. ZZ Top and Status quo: of course they share a sense of musical minimalism, but I think ZZ Top do it in a far more sophisticated way.

Re: ZZ Top

Gunter,

I'm not comparing the musical abilities of both bands, just the fact that they have stuck by doing what they know best and lets be fair they are both great at doing what they do, sure there are many more "musically sophisicated" bands out there, but that's not what these guys are about.

Also, whilst writing this I can not comprehend the idea that ZZ Top do anything in a "Sohisticated" way, lets hope they never go down that road, Tush, Legs, Gimme all your lovin, nope, no sophistication there!  lol  lol

It's called Rock n Roll and long live the both of them!! cool  cool  cool

Re: ZZ Top

ZZ Top make it futile and fruitless to engage in a power trio format as a career path....none have ever done better, all in my opinions.  Never been a lineup change.  I totally love and respect that.  And just hearing anything from them can make my day.

sorry to be a pedant but the first lineup was BFG, Billy Etheridge and D.M. Mitchell, - shortly afterwards Frank and Dusty who were already playing together hooked up with BFG: Frank "I think you gonna like the backbeat" and Dusty "I think you gonna like the bottom beat" were reportedly their first words to BFG, the rest is history.

If you are into ZZ Top I cannot recommend highly enough BFG's book "Rock + Roll Gearhead", his music, his cars (and 1 bike) and mots importantly his guitars, starting with "Pearly Gates".

Just wish they would have had a better label over the last few years because their promotion was shocking.

Re: ZZ Top

ZZ Top is ageless.  When you watch a DVD from the 1979 Deguello tour or the one from only a couple of years back, the quality and integrity is the same.  They have a style that is relevant today as it was back then.  Try that test with almost any other "rockers" that have been around for 40 years.  And Pearly?  She only gets better with age.

Gibson 60th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul Reissue, Gibson LP Standard Faded CSB, Gibson Gary Moore LP Standard, Epi Joe Bonamassa GT LP, Epi Zakk Wylde LP, Dean Michael Schenker Flying V, Jackson Randy Rhoads V, ESP/LTD George Lynch Kamikaze, EVH Striped Series R/B/W, Fender/Squire John 5 Telecaster, Fender Joe Strummer Relic Telecaster

Isn´t the simplest- if it´s done in the right way-  the most sophisticated?

No need to apologize, Ian! I didn't qualify my statement with no lineup change once the three of them got started recording back in 1970.  Plus, no "disbanding"!  Thanks for the book recommendation.  It sounds quite interesting.  Regarding promotion, mere mention of ZZ perks ears up over here, and people show up for albums and concerts.  Not the case over there, huh?

I'd tend to agree, Günter.  To me, ZZ Top getting sophisticated is doing something like TV Dinners!!!.........if the sauce is not too blue! lol

Re: ZZ Top

Following on from my initial post about ZZ Top, Last night I played at our Local Jam Night at the Sutton Arms in Southend, did the normal stuff you know, bit of Spencer Davies, bit of Guns'N'Roses, but by far best cheers of the evening go to, your've guessed it, Tush and Sharp Dressed Man  cool  cool  cool

You gotta just love this stuff  lol  lol  lol  lol

By the way, it was the most fun to play as well, something you can really get your teeth stuck into!

Long Live the Beards and Beard

Re: ZZ Top

and Stewart talking of beards dont forget to take in some Canned Heat (if you have n't already), - think I am right in saying that they made it big first with the boogie/shuffle blues sound, - of course with their reportedly epic set at Woodstock 1969

A bit of "A" chord boogie:

Woodstock:

Classic live video, (one of the best) love the audience involvement at 1min 20, - nicking a Marlboro from "The Bear"!

and for some BFG tone:

and this video is best proof that not everybody can make this riff bounce:

Slash is so wooden, - and John Mayer wipes the floor with him

Re: ZZ Top

I hope they release their new album soon. Rick Rubin produced it and they said that it's gonna sound like the stuff they did before Eliminator, so that should be good .

Re: ZZ Top

The true wonderfulness of this band cannot be exaggerated. You cannot watch them without smiling. The Rev. Willy G is a monster  big_smile

And those beards....  cool   big_smile
