Re: Clapton covered Gary Moore

I was there last night. Stunning show.

I also posted a thread on this in the General section.

Guitars: 95 Les Paul Standard, Relic Strat,
Amps: 1973 Marshall JMP 50 head and Vintage Modern Cab. I use no effects other than a Cry Baby on occasions.

Re: Clapton covered Gary Moore

Beautifully played...... and good to see Steve Gadd still knocking out a steady rhythm for Eric.  smile

Re: Clapton covered Gary Moore

Nice sentiment by Eric. I thought it was a shame that he didn't solo more on the outro section and left it to the keys instead.

Re: Clapton covered Gary Moore

It's nice to pay tribute, but going to a Clapton concert these days is like going to visit my Gran...and at least she seems to have more energy at 89...
Lounge concert.
...and I say that, because we have people like J.Beck out there...always on the edge and beyond everyone younger than him.

Re: Clapton covered Gary Moore

Well that was the sit down acoustic portion of the show.  Also after 1974 EC focused more on singing and songwriting then the solos.  Trust me he can keep up with the best of them, but Jeff Beck is a Monster that the general public never understood.

Re: Clapton covered Gary Moore

Comparing Beck and Clapton are like comparing apples and oranges. Never understood it. Just because they were both in the Yardbirds doesn't mean they're going to both go the same way. Just because Clapton's not doing something a certain way doesn't make it any less brilliant. Jeff Beck is just amazing on every level, but when Clapton hits a solo, it's just really hard to best that, in my opinion. They both go in directions that people don't expect. Can anyone honestly sit there and tell me that they expected Clapton to release an album like his last one? Did not expect him to be doing songs like My Very Good Friend the Milkman.

When Clapton 'used' to hit a solo...
There's just no spark to the shows any more...they're not necessarily bad...just...well, certainly sit down shows for the over the rainbow crowd.
I want there to be some 'danger' in the music that is produced, not resting on past blues...that's all...and of course, my opinion.

Re: Clapton covered Gary Moore

I saw him in Tulsa last year and at Crossroads, and he burned. There's no "used to" about it. He played Voodoo Chile (the slow blues) with Steve Winwood and it tore my head off. And the sit down part only happens for a part of the show, not the whole thing.

Re: Clapton covered Gary Moore

For me my best way to describe Eric Clapton is inconsistent.  You don't know when he is going to have it and when he is not.  This did have a lounge effect which he likes and wasn't really all that inspiring.

Re: Clapton covered Gary Moore

EC did that 10 years ago.  Then he hired Doyle Bramhall the 2nd as his 2nd in guitar.  Doyle woke EC up from easy listening train he was on.  In 2004 I saw EC pull out the Dominos stuff that he had not touch since the Dominos!  Gotta Get Better In A Little While?  Ever heard it?  Its a house burner.  Then in 2006 he picks up Derek Trucks and does more Dominos.

Bottom Line is I saw EC 4 times once in 2001 when he played Over the Rainbow, which sounded great, then in 2004 I saw him back to back.  The first night my dad told me The best show he had ever seen was in 1975 eric clapton and carlos santana played little wing that night.  After that show we went to he told me that was the best he had ever seen it was better then back in 75'.  The next night Eric Clapton played the same set list minus one song.  Why?  Because he played his **** off on have you ever loved a woman.  To which my dad told me "That really was THE best show he had ever seen."  EC was ring and wet and had to take his glasses off.  When I saw him in 2006 he had trucks with him and played what I would consider his best works from most of the layla record.  He was flat out brilliant and honestly could do anything that night.

Eric Clapton is not Jeff Beck, but Jeff Beck is not Eric Clapton.  Eric has the ability to play from his hear and soul, Jeff does too.  But Eric has great taste in phrase choices.  Eric rarely hits a bad note.  Jeff likes to ride by the seat of his pants and pushes the limits.  When Jeff Beck is on he really is one of the most brilliant guitarist ever, but I've heard people say that Jeff if he has a bad night he sounds like one of the worst guitarist ever.  Like I said its a taste thing and I just like the way EC phrases his guitars.  EC is a total package where Jeff BEck lets face it if you've heard one wild song he has you've heard them all.  At least I can relate to the sitting down and being real with you.

Agreed on the phrasing part. But I will disagree with you on Beck. Beck is freakin' brilliant. How he gets all of those tones and sounds with just a cranked Marshall and maybe a wah pedal is beyond me. And this is coming from a guy that used to not get him.

I'm surprised to hear that I'm not alone with my feelings.
Missed the fire and passion in that cover and I found it strange to see Mr Clapton sitting on a chair when playing.

Re: Clapton covered Gary Moore

Could Clapton play that song electric and try to sound like Gary Moore?  Sure, but he won't do it.  Why?  That song is Gary Moore's song and EC couldn't do it just dues.  Eric is going to sound like Eric.  Not to mention it might have been on a whem to just play the song because he was in Gary's home town.  He was trying to keep it original.  I think a lot of the guitar players on this board miss the point of the feeling of the tune because they are so focused on how good the guitar playing was.  The song was sang beautifully, I thought the keyboards was a bit much but Tim Carmen always does that.  It was meant to honor Gary Moore not to try and out stage him on one of his biggest hit songs.

Clapton has done a 5 or 6 song mini-sit-down set in his shows for years. This is not new.

Right!  Steve Gadd is the monster.  I watched them wheel him in for a sound check 1 afternoon, years back.  I clucked.  Poor old sot can't even walk.  How's he gonna play with EC.?

Au contraire, mon frere.  He ruled.

I saw EC with Derek Trucks & Doyle Bramhall II ... part of the show was sit-down acoustic, part of it was smoking hot.  When they played the Dominos stuff Derek was channeling Duane Allman!  Even "Cocaine" was over the top!   Having said that, EC seems rather shy, he rarely speaks during a show which for me leaves out an important connection.  Also Eric has said himself he gets lazy unless there's someone really good around him to inspire him ... such as Joe Bonamassa, Further on up the Road I say!  cool

Oh and I forgot to mention Robert Cray opened and came back for the last 2-3 numbers!

Appreciating Gary Moore as I do now, I think it's awesome that EC honored him by playing this song, which is one of my personal favorites, and I agree, he would play it as EC, not try to be GM.
