Congrats to Real Madrid 1 - 0 win over Barcelona , Mourinho's first piece of silverware for the club.  Congrats to Real's "one trick pony" in scoring the only goal!!!!

One down-side.... this happened while Real, were celebrating on an open top bus! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/13155619.stm

Well Crack, what a difference one letter makes, eh? It is, of course, the Copa del REy, the King's Cup.....and I can just sense the schadenfreude in your post on a game you wouldn't normally mention, except for the fact that it's no secret that Barca is a team I like and support.  roll

Oh, and how many games has ManU played since the win against us? Simple pleasures for.....  roll

I agree with many of your comments, Mike. Real could have been leading 2-0 at HT, but they could (and possibly should) have been down to 9 men, after both Pepe and Arbeloa visibly and deliberately stood on the ankles of their victims! Equally, Barca could (and possibly should) have had at least two goals in the second half, but for brilliant saves by Casillas. Once we got to extra time the game was always going to be decided by one goal and in all fairness, their goal was a cracker.

Like you, I hope and expect this result to have been a wake-up call, and Barca to make no mistake in the CL semi. Let's just hope that we see refs with some balls, because these last two games have seen the dirtiest Real side I have ever seen! Sadly, physical intimidation has worked for them so far, so I expect Mourinho to continue with the same tactics.

As for our beloved Hammers, I've given up hope after their abysmal performance against Villa in what was just another 'must win' game. They were really very poor.  sad

Re: The Football Topic

Well, the dogfight in the EPL really begins now.

I took the time to play with the BBC 'predictor' yesterday just entering results I felt were honest as the games came up. Of course, I would like the Hammers to survive but one may as well be realistic at this time.

So I was surprised to see we survived on 38 points, the six points being gleaned from a home win against Blackburn and perhaps more dramatically an away win against Wigan. Doable, but only with heart and character, 2 traits that must be rediscovered before the seasons end.

My relegation fall guys were Blackpool, Wigan and Blackburn, so not a good day for Lancashire!

United win the EPL while Spurs dropped to 6th with Liverpool continuing their resurgent run and overtaking them.

My first result came good last night with Stoke beating Wolves 3-0 which was one better than I predicted!

COYI - well, I can dream can't I?

Re: The Football Topic

Being in D and having seen Neuer quite a bit it was no surprise to see him do so well.

He is the best in the BL just now so a move to Muenchen was to be expected I suppose although disappointing because it just emphasises once again the bias towards Bayern.

Neuer wants to win cups and championships and so the obvious place to go is to the side that stands the best chance every year instead of building something with Schalke. Bayern have the better marketing platform and heritage for sure but Schalke have the potential ultimately.

Thank goodness Dortmund have changed the status quo this year and I hope they secure the title in the coming weeks. Their manager Jurgen Klopp is a real character. Man motivation and management is his forte for sure. I could see him managing abroad. He has the charisma of a Mourinho but without the arrogance.

As for Neuer, Manchester United would have been a better destination I think although maybe he isn't ready for that because like all German keepers he can't catch a ball! well, not often enough anyway. Amazing how many goals you see every week where the keepers punch is instantly returned for a goal. They punch away the rudimentary of shots that an English keeper would take in his arms (almost) every time.

Still hopefully Schalke will give a better account of themselves in the return leg. They have nothing else to play for. They won't win, but they should perform better than they did last night. Maybe when Neuer see's Old Trafford he might change his mind.

sat down to watch Real V Barca last night...... sad  Turned over part way through first half. So disappointing to see such appalling behavior from some of the players; if I want to see theatrics I will buy a ticket to the theatre, if I want to see diving there is another sport for that!  wink For  a game that is supposedly the pinnacle of the sport it did nothing more than highlight the shameful side and why retrospective decisions need to be made post match to tackle the cheats.

Well done to my team last night..... rather a one sided affair, were it not for Manuer Neuer in goal, could have been 6.  The job is only half done of course!

Tell you what, Crack - just stick to c&p-ing, since you can't even be bothered to make proper corrections to your ridiculous mis-spellings. I told you that it's the Copa del REY, not RAY, but you haven't bothered to correct, probably because I pointed it out.

Next, you are SO up on football (like most ManU 'fans' in London  big_smile  ) that you wrote "Manuer Never" for one of the continent's best known goalies, which you then 'corrected' to the above joke! FYI, his name is ManueL.  roll It really shouldn't be too much to ask that well known (and not difficult) player's names are spelled correctly.

Lastly, you appear to be oblivious to how pathetic you make yourself look by keeping your idiotic signature on that one result that clearly means more to you than any of your team's subsequent results.  lol You really are a very sad little man.

Mike, I fear that we're f%*^ed.  sad  Try as I might, I can't put a better spin on it. We're going to get nothing at Citeh on Sunday, which will leave us points adrift. We'll be joining Wolves in the fizzy pop next season.

I also was disgusted with the amount of falling over and play-acting in last night's game. Sadly, this appears to be an inherent part of the Spanish game. I look forward to a proper game of football in the final, because ManU are not as dirty a side as Real have been over the last three games vs. Barca, and because Taggart is not as devious as the Special One. Naturally, I expect Barca to beat ManU - again.  tongue

Just about echoes my thoughts. A real bad night for the game. Only Messi comes out of that game with credit - his team-mates should hang their heads in shame. I can't recall seeing ever seeing a game where the referee was put under so much pressure and it came as no surprise when he eventually cracked and got a big one wrong.

As for West Ham's chances George, I still think it's too close to call. My lot looked like rabbits in the headlights even at one up against Fulham on Saturday and were fortunate to get the draw. That left us needing to get something at Thug City on Tuesday, and although they had a huge slice of good fortune with their second and third goals, it seems we never turned up. Two big local derbies next which will decide our fate. Can't understand how we can beat the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, and United and struggle against the lesser teams.

Re: The Football Topic

a good weekend for football or a shocking one? Some very important outcomes purely as result of referring mistakes, - all part of the game?

As a Spurs fan...okay the ball was not over the line but Gomes should never have spilled that ball (again), - a real shame for him personally as having met him once he is a really nice guy, - but then so is Paul Robinson, and he also left after a loss of confidence, - my conclusion is that there is something seriously wrong with keeper coaching at WHL....The offside goal, - was a very close call and like the first non goal you have to have some sympathy for the officials who are doing their best, - but in reality as the ever gracious Harry and others have said doing your best is no longer good enough given the high stakes.

Well today was probably the only time that I have not watched an Arsenal game so as to see them loose, - and yes Owen should have had a penalty. So even if the results of both the ManU/Arsenal and Chelsea/Spurs results were wrong, both results were good for the title race...Could have doe with West Ham beating Man City though, - Man Ciy are now the worst team to watch.. could n't believe the negativity from a home side, - and if anybody else wonders why one of the richest Clubs in the World bought Balotelli, here is a clip (if you have not seen it before) of him having a bit of bib trouble:

Re: The Football Topic

Ian. although I rarely can muster up any sympathy for Spurs, I have to admit that you were shafted by the ref. Two shocking decisions.

West Ham, as expected, lost at Citeh. Considering that we were 2-0 down after 20 minutes, 'only' losing 2-1 was something of an achievement. One of my (insanely optimistic) Hammer buddies here still thinks we'll escape with 39 points. I think we're doomed.  sad

You wouldn't know it if you only read this topic, where the super dedicated ManU fan has yet again declined to update his purely provocative signature, but ManU got beat by Arsenal today, thereby creating the possibility that the title race is not yet a foregone conclusion.

Re: The Football Topic

This topic is about as interesting as watching paint dry for this American but those that are fans of soccer take it pretty serious. I am sitting here writing this call for civility between two rival fans and listening to the speculation that Ben Laden has either been killed or has died which brings this into perspective. I wish a couple of Joe fans would lighten up about the soccer issues.

Apparently posting a score in your signature bothers one member I value and that signature is on a member who I have no problems with so could you guys agree to disagree on this subject and quit worrying about such trivial issues in the world of Joe. Ben Laden is dead. Confirmed. That is a score I'm concerned with. This is the last I well speak of either.

The value of this messageboard is not purely around Joe chat but rather the value that the members bring with their differing views and opinions on any number of subjects. A real shame when opinions on matters that impact us all are not allowed to be discussed.

How long before this football thread is closed down because it dares to have differing opinions? - Jim with all respect I guess that you do not understand the game and the passions that it brings, - and so you know in future Football or Soccer as you might call it is one if the fastest growing sports in the USA.

Re: The Football Topic

I'm not particularly bothered the OBL thread has gone as anything that would give that person a platform for discussion, or comment doesn't necessarily warrant a place on this forum, no matter how civilised and democratic we are.

That said Jim, (and I've got my tongue in my cheek here) mentioning OBL on the football thread is completely misplaced.

Despite the (late) OBL being a global threat to peace and reasonable minded people I refuse to consider his existence or subsequent demise more important than football (or soccer if you will).

I can agree we can let bygones be bygones in respect of some of the minor niggles we might have between us but c'mon "Lighten up"?

The late great Bill Shankly (Former manager of Liverpool FC) summed it up best.

"Football is NOT a matter of life and death, it's far more important than that."

Yeah, and he probably had his tongue is his cheek too.............

I agree with the previous posters, but will say no more.

I'm delighted to see that Barca have made it to the Wembley final on May 28 after a thoroughly deserved 3-1 aggregate win over the arch enemy from Madrid. Sadly, neither of the semis turned out to be the great games we had hoped for, though there were enough Messi flashes of brilliance to keep us lovers of the beautiful game happy.  big_smile

I was asked to referee a topic I know nothing about. So I happened to be writing my post as the news was breaking, thinking to myself how trivial this spat is in the grand scheme of life. Sorry if I bruised anyone's feelings. The closed Bin Laden thread was due to the potential for it to become heated and I am not able to sit at the keyboard and monitor the forum 24/7.

I make some good and bad calls in my efforts to moderate. When asked to call touch fouls which are not clearly flagrant fouls you tend to get the players complaining about the officiating. Now if you will let me exit this topic without any further interventions you all can get back to your soccer obsession I'll stick to my Joe B obsession.
