Re: Matt Schofield
Seeing as ClaptonisGod asked so nicely
Yesterday I travelled up to Kinross to see Matt Schofield and his band in concert. They were plaing a new venue which is in the back of a large hotel, and has many great up and coming acts like Marcus Bonfanti (next week), Vigil & The Accelorators (in December) and Ol Brown, Dani Wilde and Sandi Thom next year.
Matt has reverted back to a trio with the ever present Johnny Henderson on keys, piano (and bass) and ex Robert Cray drummer Kevin Hayes on drums. Hayes is certainly a welcome member of the lineup and fit in every well with his clever drumming and apparent enthusiam as he mouthed the lyrics of several songs. The band played a cut from each album, before concentrating on a few songs from Heads, Tails & Aces. Sadly disaster struck during Lay It Down, shortly before Matt's lead guitar solo the sound stopped coming from his guitar!! The organ duo stylishly finished the song on his instruction, as their leader called the interval early, to get another guitar amp from their van!
Matt was not unduly concerned and during his calming cigarette told a few of us that he still had that solo inside and needed to get it out, so that's how the second set started! The second set was looser as the band relaxed and played some covers from Elmore James and Albert Collins (Black Cat Bone and Travelling South), plus Ear To The Ground and a stunning Not Raining Now before the encore of Sifting Through Ashes. British blues guitar playing at it's best. Have a good one tonight in Glasgow, Claptonisgod, there is a good write up of the show in the Scottish edition of the free Metro newspaper today so hopefully that will help encourage a good crowd.
