Topic: JJ Grey and Mofro

I wanted to post this for 4 weeks now and somehow never managed, but here´s another great "new" band (they already released 5 albums... so "new" is kind of relative): JJ Grey and Mofro. They play soulful Blues-Funk-Rock-Gospel music...call it what you want, or just give it a listen:

The sweetest thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6J-SBfMP5A (yes, they do even have a music video!  wink )

King Hummingbird: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OD1TWoLF … re=related

Their latest album "Georgia Warhorse" is their best - I´m listenting to it pretty much at least once a day ever since Ben discovered it over a month ago - brings a lot of sunlight into the winter mood. My dad also got two of their other albums ("Lochloosa" and "Country Ghetto") that are very good too.

Nice video. Yes, I´m JJ Grey addicted number three. A family affair, so to say, but there is also Roger from Switzerland.

Re: JJ Grey and Mofro

Yep, thanks to you, Günter. Love it. In the meantime I got ALL of his albums...

Re: JJ Grey and Mofro

Another JJ Grey and Mofro fan here (and the Missus, too). smile

I learned of them thru a recommendation on amazon and bought the Lochloosa album. Great stuff!

I'm not good at music categories, but I would describe their music as relaxed southern folk rock... OK, I just looked them up at Wikipedia. They call them "a soul/funk/R&B/blues/southern rock band".

Looks like I'll have to give their new album a listen. Thanks for the hint. smile

If you like JJ Grey and Mofro, you might also like...

... Grayson Capps - try his album "If You Knew My Mind". His music is more on the folky side compared to Mofro.
... Tishamingo. They're more "rocky" than Mofro. Try "The Point" - what a groovin', rockin' album. I can't get those songs out of my head.

Have fun,

Rusty

Re: JJ Grey and Mofro

Love Tishamingo! It's to bad they aren't around anymore- at least I haven't been able to find them. Saw them at the Telluride Blues Fest a few years back.

Saw JJ Grey for the first time a few weeks ago in Madison, WI. Sorry to say, I was yawning. Perhaps I was expecting to much as I've heard they put on a great life show. But it was his band that impressed me the most. Todd Smallie on Bass (Dereck Trucks) and the Greyhounds on key's and guitar.

The opening act- Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights were more my style. Great vocals and showmanship.

To each they're own!

Re: JJ Grey and Mofro

I never had the chance to see JJ Grey live. I think that's mostly because he's never been to Germany...  wink
Same with Tishamingo. But - judging from their website - it looks like they're still around: http://www.tishamingo.com/dates/.

Have fun,

Hi Eva,

This thread has reminded me that JJ Grey and Mofro was recommended to me by their UK PR company (they were also Joe's until recently  hmm  ).

Here's what I was sent.

BBC Radio 2 Bob Harris "Very atmospheric, very swampy"

Bluesart “A strong example of just why these roots-rock guys are so popular – rock ‘n’ soul, slinky, swampy down-home funk,  'rock 'n' soul' an aching acoustic number with a country tinge,  and Toots Hibbert joining JJ for a piece of classic soul.”

Zeitgeist & Amazon “….this might be the album that breaks them through to a wider audience.”

Get Ready To Rock  JJ serves up an emotive set of soul laced southern blues, delivered with honesty, humility, and well, soul. “Georgia Warhorse” does exactly what it says on the can, without frills or pretension and confirming that this particular brand of rock is, like the lubber grasshopper, indestructible.

Sunshine Radio (Wales) “Love the JJ Grey album...It's one of the classiest albums of the year”

Fatea  “This is the sort of blues that could buy you redemption or a hot place in hell, pretty much your choice.”

Blues in Britain JJ Grey & Mofro have produced a deeply, sumptuously & subtly compelling album 8/10

Burton Daily Mail  4****Sultry and mellow, Georgia Warhouse incorporates everything that stands for American blues and rock.

Bournemouth Echo  “Imagine Otis Redding hadn’t died in 1967 but had gone on to make an album with The Faces in 1972 in which he channeled the funky spirit of Sly Stone and the voodoo heart of Dr  John.  Congratulations, you’ve just conjured the swampy musical melting pot that is Georgia boy JJ Grey and his band of merry pranksters Mofro”

Total Guitar Mag “Georgia Warhorse” is a beautiful collection of southern rock/soul songs. JJ’s voice drives every song.  Soul and rock happy together.

Re: JJ Grey and Mofro

I've seen the last two shows of JJ Grey & Mofro + Marcus Bonfanti and they have been amongst the best I have ever been to. They are hoping to be back in UK around Oct/Nov.
also check out the listing on the Paul Jones radio 2 show as I think the session they did is being aired on 23rd May
