Topic: Bo Diddley suffers stroke, in intensive care

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Bo Diddley is in intensive care after suffering a stroke in western Iowa, a publicist said Wednesday.

The 78-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was listed in guarded condition at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., said Susan Clary, a publicist for the musician's management team.

Diddley, who has a history of hypertension and diabetes, was taken to hospital Sunday following a concert in Council Bluffs in which he acted disoriented, she said.

Tests indicated the stroke affected the left side of his brain, impairing his speech and speech recognition, Clary said.

Clary said she has no other details on Diddley's condition or how long he would be in intensive care.

Diddley, with his black glasses and low-slung guitar, has been an icon in the music industry since he topped the R&B charts with "Bo Diddley" in 1955. His other hits include "Who Do You Love," "Before You Accuse Me," "Mona" and "I'm a Man."

Diddley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and was given a lifetime achievement Grammy in 1998.

Hope he recovers soon too.  I never will forget seeing one of his guitars that he personally made.  It was displayed at the Hard Rock Cafe in London.  Really cool...

Re: Bo Diddley suffers stroke, in intensive care

Very sad news.  When a guy can build a guitar out of a cigar box (turns it into his patented ax), transform music near single-handedly, make an exciting song or two with a single-chord (don't forget that chinka-chinka chink rhythm, Joe's right), has the guts to hire a woman guitarist (decades ago), travels and tours incessantly, has a sense of humor, an amazing catalog (some of the absolute coolest stuff ever), man I could go on & on....GET WELL BO! We love you!

When I lived around green bay, one of my backup drummers told me he did a tour with Bo Diddley way back when. I guess, from what I heard - he cannot stand a "ride" symbol. He won't let a drummer use it. Little quarks like that. He had some good stories.

That's very sad to hear.  His was some of the very first music that I remember as a very little kid, on some 50s compliation 8-track tape that I used to sneak & listen to on my brother's 'big' stereo.  I never had the good fortune to see him, but it was cool to get a look at his guitar at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame a few years back.  He will be in my prayers.

Re: Bo Diddley suffers stroke, in intensive care

Very sad to hear. Bo is the shiznit.

Jane, that guitar is the Gretsch Jupiter. I know Billy Gibbons is now using them as his main guitars, although with a collection like his, you'll always find him playing different ones. He started using them after he dug one out of his collection that Bo had given Billy. Now, Gretsch has created a new version called the Gretsch "Billy Bo" Jupiter Thunderbird.
