Topic: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Allright, if there is another thread somewhere I'll kill this one  tongue  .....lets bring out your heart, and your head....here's what Shreddy thinks about the season in short.....this is a "all teams stay relative healthy for the year"

Right off the top of my head  roll

The National League pennant:  San Francisco Giants vs Philadelphia Phillies.....winner Philly in 5 games

The American League pennant: Boston Redsox vs The Minnesota Twins....winner Redsox in 5 also

World Champions:......PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES!!!!!! in one of the greatest series ever....that would be Game 7....Doc Halladay vs Josh Beckett

My heart is The New York Yankees in 7 games against anyone.....but I will go on record right now and say they are done, not another sniff of a World Championship for years  neutral  ....Derek Jeter gets this 3000th hit and Alex Rodrigues gets closer to 700

Ha Shred,
Funny I'd be the first to read this.

As a diehard Phillies fan, I have to say I'm uncomfortable with all the hype surrounding the pitching, etc.  So much energy will be focused on the media looking at the team under a microscope.  I think it was Cliff Lee who said recently, we all should be looking at this as: Its any teams game to the ultimate World Series prize.  We all know $hit happens. (this part is me)  big_smile

I'm not being negative and thanks for the vote of confidence, but the Phillies need to heat up their bats.  wink

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I think the Giants will be strong again. As for the rest, injury has already reared its ugly head in Spring Training. Every morning's read brings up a new cast of wounded players. Don't these guys keep working out in the off season? All Star Break may be when the field will be sorted out. My Pads will be somewhere back in the pack. Only 3 healthy starters right now and a cast of ????

I like your prediction Shred, except being a Red Sox fan I hope the Sox can beat Angela's (& my Mother's) Phillies. smile

Hey Shred, Rick's sweating it as our young ace Latos just went on injured reserve.  yikes This club relied on pitching and right now, there isn't any!

It appears Rocket has been drinking the Kool-ade or perhaps something a bit stronger.
Love the Cubs, but some planets/players would need to align for that to happen. Career years by Dempster, Big Z and Garza and a re-emergence by Randy Wells might be a good start.
Starlin Castro and Tyler Colvin having stellar sophomore years?
Aramis Ramirez hitting like he can? Soto? Carlos Marmol?
Ain't sure it can all come together...pessimism comes with the territory when you're a Cubs fan!
Now them White Sox are being sold short and I predict the will win their division if Dunn is Dunn and Peavy stays healthy.

Ahhh. Opening day. Those familiar voices on the radio.  Padres win in  dramatic fashion over the Redbirds in 10. Life is good! big_smile
Home and a pitchers duel between the Giants and Dodgers on the TV on a glorious warm evening.
I love this game!

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

The current issue of SI is a very good read for baseball fans, its the baseball preview. (my issue has the 5 Phillie pitchers on front)

Sports Illustrated playoff predictions :  Red Sox over A's/Twins over Yankees then Red Sox over the Twins
Phillies over Rockies/Giants over Reds then Giants over Phillies

World Series:  Red Sox over Giants

Hombre-this is the second prediction I've heard of and they both had the Red Soxs winning the World Series!

Yeah Tres,it's going to be a fun year. Maybin looks like another genius trade by the Pads. He is young and whiffs a lot but his pop, defensive skills and speed may pay off down the line. A hysterical quote from the post game interview of Bell. They asked about Maybin, who had gotten cramps in the 11th from too much adrenalin, after his hit that led to the win and Bell said, "Oh, I think he has crabs" with a straight face. The announcer just about had a laughing fit! lol  lol  lol  lol

not to be a Debbie Downer, opening day is always fun, but what is it about some people that think if they buy a ticket to a sporting event that they are entitled to exhibit bad behavior? Like it just comes with the ticket. 1. people that don't get out too much, 2. alcohol, 3. combination of both. Apparently THEIR ticket includes the right to spit on you, or worse throw up on you, dump a beer on you, run out on the field, and attack players and/or coaches.
I just read about the Giant fan in the hospital in critical but stable condition after the game last night at Chavez. Unbelievably, he and 2 other Giant fans were attacked and beaten by Dodgers fans who had followed them to their car. I thought I read where about 130 people were arrested on opening day at Chavez last year. It makes me real sick to the stomach.
Night before last Dominique Wilkens was attacked after the Hawks game, just after finishing his post game show. The guy was arrested and told police that Wilkins owed him money for some suits.
Still, it seems to be a trend that people think they can get away with anything because they hold that little tickie. A sorry state of affairs affecting many sports, not just baseball.

This could get ugly. We had a big soccer match here two days ago. A drunk fan was ejected after throwing stuff at fans and security. When the police outside the stadium tried to arrest him, he resisted and was taken down by a policeman with a carotid hold. Now it has gone viral on YT with screams of police brutality. It will lead to alcohol being banned from stadia. Alcohol has already been banned at ALL PARKS AND BEACHES in San Diego due to the actions of a few. The days of a family picnic and a beer are gone.

Tres you're right, but I think people that act this way at sports events are more than likely to act out in a bar, restaraunt, concert, behind the wheel, or sadly in their own home involving a loved one.

Can I just point out (on Cathy and Jane's behalf) that the O's have started 4-0?

cool   big_smile

I think it's a cultural thing about mis-behaving on drink - you can buy beer at any Dutch football game, while there is virtually never any mention of alcohol related incidents. In the UK, on the other hand, some stadiums ban alcohol at the seats, though you can drink in the foyer.

It's always a pity when a very small minority spoil the pleasure of the vast majority.

edit - 4-0  big_smile

What happened at Dodger Stadium disgust me.....wait until the hated Dodgers come here to S.F.....Giant fans can get downright ugly towards Dodger fans, and trust me, retaliation WILL happen.....with so many parking lots located at odd places around the stadium, people can get hurt in a heartbeat....I'm staying at home to watch the games, been in a bad fight with 4 Dodger fans in the past, and my friends Dad of all people started it  roll .....

Peace to all,
Shred

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Opening day here yesterday was all peace and love except when a fan wearing a Dodger shirt walked up to get a beer. Roundly booed. A bit in your face wearing a Dodger shirt to a Padres/Giants game... The Giants are not playing very well right now and a gift win was happily accepted.

Peace To All should be accorded to the Dodgers when they come north! Think it is time to change to calling an opponent "dreaded" instead of hated!  Where thugs and gangsturds got the idea that it is not about whether you win or lose or play well and are gracious about either outcome whether home or away "fan"' but ridiculing others in an unfriendly way (it can be done friendly and humor laden)....????????
Sports team violence is just immature bullying, whether unprovoked attacks or dogs in the park growl, bark, and bite exchanges!
