Topic: Miscellaneous Music Discoveries

I hope I'm not stepping on some threads here.  If someone thinks I am please let me know and I'll delete this.  For awhile I've thought to do something like this to promote bands I come across that could be of interest to some forum members.  Most of them will be younger torch bearers of real music.  My first post will be the husband and wife team of Nicki and Tim Bluhm.

Tim Bluhm heads up The Mother Hips.  TMH have strong Neil Young/Eagles/Tom Petty influences that produces a nice Cali rock sound.

Nicki Bluhm's new release Driftwood is a very strong recording.

Two thumbs up for Curby. He sent me 4 mixed CD's of killer tracks, at least half of which I'd never heard of as part of a swap for spices and stuff. Mr. Encyclopedic Knowledge Man with a collection to die for. Your taste is impeccable Sir. Number one is great. Let 'er rip! cool

Yeah glad you decided to hang around.  One of the cool things about MuchJoe is the diverse & careful selection of off the wall covers... Here's one more:

One of the things I love most about this place are the surprise discoveries of 'unknown' bands/artists that are recommended by forum members!

Keep 'em coming, Curby. I, for one, am all ears for new stuff!

Thanks for the kind words but don't forget this is a thread for shouts from everyone.  Not just me.
I mentioned him earlier today in the Gary Moore thread but think he deserves a bit more promotion.  Up till now I've just skirted his output of Philadelphonic Soul.  His new album though appears to be a new direction.  Didn't know it but Mr. Love cut his teeth on the blues and with help from the Avett Brothers may have a very interesting new avenue.  I've attached the title song off the new album plus an awesome stripped down version of "Love, Peace and Happiness".  Just click the play on "Fixin' To Die" out now!  FTD is so damn energetic and the video is a good 'un.  I recommend hitting the full screen, put on the earbuds and listen at max volume.  Same instruction for the second song (LP&H).

Brack,

Adele isn't known by one name for nothing.  I've always said there must be something in the water to produce so many great female vocalists in your country.  I've been counting down the days for her release.  It'll be hard to top 19 though.

Re: Miscellaneous Music Discoveries

Hi Curby,

Being from Philly, I heard of G. Love through my son, who has seen G.Love  & the Special Sauce probably twice.  My son made me a mixed CD of some of the music he thought I'd like, G.Love is on there.  So, is this a different venture and the Special Sauce is no longer?  wink

Re: Miscellaneous Music Discoveries

Angela,

I doubt he's parted ways with Special Sauce.  G is a creative artist that's experimented with different genres and the new album is a return to where he started musically.  The two playing with him in the video are the Avett brothers.  They both produced and play on Fixin' To Die.  Not sure, but I believe SS is included in the production.

Re: Miscellaneous Music Discoveries

I'm pretty sure Eric Lindell has been mentioned here before, but this will be an update so to speak for what this guy's doing lately.  I've always liked his music, but recent releases from last year's Between Motion and Rest, and last month's B Side Gems are taking his sound to a new level.  To quote Tina Turner, B Side starts "smooth, but ends rough", but in between it's all good.  Highlights for me are the rockier "Room To Grow" and the Zeppelinish "Sugar Pie".

Re: Miscellaneous Music Discoveries

How about these guys? Or to be precise "Errorhead" and "Marcus Deml" on guitar?

Got an information from my favourite venue which is Saal Birgit in Viersen that "ERRORHEAD" will play there 11 March.
And I'll be there.  lol
Anybody else? What about the Dutchies? Viersen isn't far away from the Dutch boarder.

Very good band, especially Marcus Deml.  I picked up some of their music today and after watching those vids can understand the excitement seeing them live.  Great shout!

Re: Miscellaneous Music Discoveries

For all you Johnny Winter fans, please check out Jay Willie and his band.  I ran across this band this morning in an email ad from Amazon.  The album is Reel Deal, and Jay Willie's slide guitar playing sounds very similar to Johnny Winter's.  No surprise, but Jay Willie lists Johnny Winter as his biggest influence.... The band even has two members that have played with Johnny Winter in the past, Tommy Shannon and Bobby T Torello.  I wish I was computer savvy enough to give you all a direct link to Amazon, but you can go to Amazon and search under music and listen to samples from the album.  I ordered my copy of the album this AM.  Hope you enjoy this.... smile

Re: Miscellaneous Music Discoveries

I made a very enjoyable discovery over the weekend. As some of you know, quite some time ago I purchased the remaining inventory of a small, "mom-and-pop" new and used record store, and have been selling the CDs on ebay. Every once in a while I'll come across a band I'm not familiar with, and I'll give it a listen before I post it for sale.

One such CD was titled Marcy Playground by Marcy Playground. I guess they've been around a while and have enjoyed some popularity, but I had never heard of them. They are a 3-piece band with a sort of minimalist-grunge thing going on, and it's actually quite good. Not to mention it's a very well mixed and engineered recording for my tastes. Very clean, very open and very accessible. It welcomes the listener in, rather than holding the listener at arms length. Good stuff for sure.

Anyway it's one of a few CDs that has been culled from the "For sale" box and added to my personal collection instead.

Re: Miscellaneous Music Discoveries

Visiting Beale Street during Memphis In May (1989) my wife and I had just started clubbing when we saw a motley band setting up across the street from the Run Boogie Cafe.  The drummer looked like some science teacher, the amps were all beaten up with duct tape and the huge guitarist's Strat looked like it had been the loser in a head-on accident.  It took them forever to get set up and we were seriously thinking about moving to another watering hole when the guitarist stretched out his Fender to warm up.  I can't remember how long it took to pick my jaw off the floor.  The name of the band was Fat Man and the Maniacs and those guys played the blues with one foot planted firmly in rock 'n' roll.  Didn't know it then, but this would be the best of the many great bands I would see there.
Last night while doing a search for Alan Nimmo's King King I came across an album release from 2004 by a band called Hot Monkey Love.  The title's Primate Blues and these guys remind me alot of FMatM.  This is music meant to be played loud.  It has a live feel to it and the band plays with an energy rarely heard these days.  I haven't been able to find links for this album, but for those with iTunes I strongly urge you to sample their songs.  At times they sound like Humble Pie on a good night (they cover HP's Ninety-Nine Pounds on the disc) and their cover of Robert Johnson's
