Re: The Football Topic

I watched both international club friendlies Sunday. Man U vs Kansas City and Man City vs New York. Both well played and exciting games with end to end action.  The US sides won both games 2-1. smile

Impulse Purchase of The Decade

Bristol City need a left sided midfielder urgently, so they buy the England International keeper David James. (Free transfer, £20,000 a week & a free BCFC Cider Tankard)

The primary logic of this move seems to be that the newly wedded James has been instructed by The Boss to get home each night to the family house in Exeter, Devon and we are the biggest club in The West Country.

Trousers, David, Trousers.

Re: The Football Topic

I really can't stomach this any more. I tell you what, Brack. You stay here and spam away by yourself, posting constant BBC links, now even c&p-ing from the Beeb without any reference to the source, posting match day scores, and now even attempting to post a table after ONE game!!?? Have you lost it completely? Do you remember what kind of forum this is? You would be laughed at in any football forum for this kind of posting stupidity. In fact, if you posted in any UK football forum the way you generally do in this forum , you would have been called a c%&* long ago. So how do you think it goes down here??

Not bad enough that you're so thick-skinned and egotistical that you continue to inflict MU's every result on a forum where, watch these words carefully now, NOBODY ELSE GIVES A TOSS about the MU score!! Now, you want to post-boost even further by posting the Prem table every week?? Jesus wept.

Furthermore, those of us who are literate sports fans know where to find any result we want, we certainly don't come to Joe's music forum to be informed about the latest sports results, which makes all those links a waste of our time and your effort. Do you see any of the guys heavily into various US sports posting their own team's every result ?? - or putting every result in their signature??? Do you see them posting constant links to sports pages for results or a game report? No, because everyone except you understands what 'forum decorum' ought to be. It is also not done to quote whole passages directly without referring to the source. Heaven forbid, some of our US readers might not even realize that the words are not your own!

I'm going to start an alternative Brack-free football 'discussion' topic, where those few of us on this forum who actually know what's going on in the game, can 'talk about' things when the occasion grabs us, without constantly being spammed by all your BBC links, your intensely annoying and utterly mis-placed, multi-colored MU score signature, and the very occasional, superficial one line contribution in your own words.

Long pent-up rant over.

Good to hear there will be a new thread for the rest of us. I don't post in the existing one anymore for this/ these reason(s). Same goes for the F1 thread also.

Re: The Football Topic

almost afraid to post back on this thread for fear of upsetting anybody but as I can see no other new football thread here goes:

I was lucky enough to pick up a press pass via Brasilian TV, - a friend needed me to do the filming whilst he interviewed the Brasilian players playing in Champions League, - so last Tuesday I was at Stamford Bridge and Wednesday at White Hart Lane.

Here are a couple of my videos:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lueDZZQ2ATY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kgcybjFryc

Observations:

Press get  treated very well, - good pre-match meal and sandwiches for half time

Press ask very stupid questions

Graham Taylor likes to eat cheese and biscuits pre match (he was next to me)

Mark Lauro does not eat

Stan Collymore is big and tweets constantly

Chelsea ground staff are very professional, - but the place has a negative atmosphere to it, - both in amongst the staff and pitch side, - they spend all their energy singing negative things about other teams.

Spurs have a wonderful atmosphere, - perhaps they were a LOT happier being in Champions League?

Harry is a very positive manager  4-4-2

Van Der Vaart looks to be a bargain

Ashley Cole is no defender, he's a winger, - the ability of Terry and Alex allow him to roam

Gareth Bale is superb

best song: "Ledley, Ledley he's only got one knee, but he's better than John Terreeeeeeee"

Re: The Football Topic

Hi Ian, thanks for the vids and observations.

I don't think there is any need to fear posting personal comment that invites discussion and debate. Like you I've been waiting for a new thread devoted to more discussion. When I want just reports I know where to go.

As for your observations, I suppose it stands to reason. The press get treated well otherwise they unfairly start a campaign or negative vendetta against individuals or clubs that don't treat them with the 'respect' they think they deserve.

Personally I would take the SirAlex/BBC attitude and treat them with the contempt they deserve mostly. Of course, you do then have to lead a 'whiter than white'life.

Lawrensen aversion to eating perhaps goes some way to explaining his dour and negative attitude most of the time. Perhaps the bloke just isn't happy.

Interested in the comments about Chelsea. Is that the effect of 'expectation' I wonder? It weighs so heavily on the clubs and fans it seems to me. Through a friend and customer, a few years back, I was semi regular visitor to Old Trafford. The chat before a game was so miserable. Despite the years of success and enough trophies to dam the Ship Canal there was just the continuing worry of being able to keep winning, and the team would never be as good as 'that year' or 'this year'. Ferguson is all knowing when they win, and a chump when they lose. Actually, I felt most don't credit him with nearly enough for the success the have had.

Spurs should enjoy their chance this year. The reality is that in making the CL this year and progressing, they may possibly undermine their chances to do it again. Wenger predicted a couple of years ago he would need 2 teams in the future to keep both campaigns on track. How crazy is that?

Still with Everton starting so badly, Villa only just getting back on track, Liverpool completely in the doldrums then the only real competition for a 4th spot this year is surely City? Maybe 'Arry can work the miracle. But then so begins your cycle of success and miserable expectation  big_smile

Van der Vaart IS a bargain

Ashley Cole? England's best player at the last World Cup. Says it all really?

Gareth Bale, when played in the right position is superb.

Fact is 'Arry is the right man at the right time for Spurs. I hope the fickle fans there let it all unfold the way it should. Get rid of King and Woodgate off the wagebill, bring in some great new talent at the back and maybe, just maybe, that happy atmosphere could hang around, well, for a little while at least............

Re: The Football Topic

Deep breath.....Ian, I'm sure you will have understood exactly how my comments were intended and at whom they were directed! Thanks for that report and the links, exactly the kind of stuff a topic like this should consist of, rather than constant, pointless, post-boosting links with an occasional semi-literate one-liner.

It is no secret that many Hammers, including myself, harbour very mixed emotions about 'good old 'Arry, going back to his days as our manager and the multitude of stories (possibly apocryphal) about brown paper bags. I have no idea how he and the Spurs board pulled off the Van der Vaart deal on the last day of the transfer window, but I predict that Raffie (as he is known here) will prove to be Spurs best signing, ever!

I'm sure that any Hammer would have signed off on seven points from the three holiday games, so I'm delighted with that, though we are still a very poor side. Ian, sorry about yesterday, mate. I'm sure the first goal was as sickening for you as it was comical for us - we all desperately hope that some team will be willing to cough up between 8-10m this transfer window so that we can finally wave good-bye to Carlton Cole.

And finally - football, as football ought to be played - I have been watching football both live and on tv for the best part of the last 50 years. After considerable thought and memory racking, I have become convinced that the current Barca team plays the most utterly beautiful football that I have ever been privileged to see - and that Messi is the most exciting, and probably the greatest player I have ever been privileged to see. Compared to him, Ronaldo is a mere arrogant trick pony while Rooney is not even worth mentioning in the same breath. Discuss.  wink

Enjoy these clips, possibly with the sound turned down.

Re: The Football Topic

No need to apologise George - we had CC on loan from Chelski a few seasons back and he was hopeless then so perhaps we should have seen it coming! Anyway they say you make your own luck. Very stretched for the second goal with piling so many forward to get something out of the game. If we had turned our dominance in the first 25 minutes into goals it could have been very different.
It's a very open Premier League this season - lots still in with a shout at the top, and frankly any three of ten could go down - there's not that many points between them. I do expect Blackburn to go into freefall after a decent start under former manager Big Sam.

Let's see if we can pour some misery on our next opponents......... Chelski!

this video is for Brack and everybody else who likes a bit of David V Goliath:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=It3pJEJroHw

On the 19th February non league Crawley Town (where I live) will go to Old Trafford to play Manchester Utd in the FA cup. Whatever the outcome of the game it is like a lottery win to Crawley, - I won't pretend to be a Crawley fan (it is not my place of birth - like that stops millions of Man U fans) but the kids (and adults) are going crazy over this one around here. Drove by the Crawley ground last Sunday, - the line was around the stadium to get tickets. I am involved in with Youth football in the town and our Club (150 plus kids) will not be able to field a team for our league games that weekend as no team can put together a team as we do not have enough players, - they are all leaving early to get up north!

Re: The Football Topic

Ah, the magic of the cup. Except these days the magic is in short supply. EPL clubs don't even start to get interested until after the 6th round it seems.

Wigan and Bolton were a classic example in the week. What was it 8 or 9 team changes apiece? and only around 15000 attending. Of course, I understand and sympathise. It's a squad game, so we musn't bleat about it and in Wigans position (which my team is) I would expect them to do the same. Shame though.

Nevertheless, 1st, 2nd or 3rd string, Manchester United can uphold the beauty of this great competition and provide Crawley with nothing more than a day out and a sound thrashing. Non league teams playing at this exalted level must be put to the sword. Show no mercy.

Nah Mike, I'm always for the lower division or non-league underdog, as long as the upset isn't against us!  wink

Speaking of upsets, I still fondly remember a certain 4-0 at UP this season, a result which, strangely enough  lol , was not ever reported by the MU score publisher.  lol

I love the tournament and get good coverage over here. I'd get more but the government has shut down all of the live TV relay sites.  sad  The chance of upset makes it very interesting. Every year, it seems that one or more of the mighty falls. I noted the absence of that weekend's results too.  big_smile

Re: The Football Topic

have to say that even the Crawley people don't really expect to win this Saturday, - but they do want a good day out, and a chance to be part of something big for a small town.p. The kids are looking to see at least some ManU first teamers but with Champions League the following week I doubt if many will be on the pitch at the start of the match.

Shame that interest in the FA Cup is dwindling, - as a kid this was the only chance of seeing a live game on TV. And to add for a lot of children it is the best chance of them getting to see a live game in a stadium.

Ah, the magic of t'cup!  tongue

My day has already been made by two of Chavski's most arrogant players missing their penalties and handing Everton an otherwise undeserved win, though Baines' free kick was a cracker!

Ian - not sure if I should be wishing you good luck for tomorrow, a draw possibly suits us better. In all normal circumstances I'd prefer the Baggies to go down rather than your lot.  wink

Re: The Football Topic

glad that Crawley Town did hold their own against the other Red Devils, think Fergie had it under control but very gracious of him to say that Crawley deserved the draw, - perhaps ManU were not as up for the game as they should have been but it did surprise me how poor they were in midfield, - Wes Brown was their best player and as such deserves to play in the final should they get to it.

As for Chelsea....oh dear  roll lack of development in youth is showing, and after what was done to Ray Wilkins they deserve what is happening to them now, no sympathy. Spurs might just surprise a few people and make Champions League 2 years on the bounce!  smile

Re: The Football Topic

What finer way to celebrate reaching 3k than with the news that West Ham United has today been officially confirmed as the post 2012 tenant of the Olympic stadium!  cool

I'm sure that our owners must have plans for dealing with the running track/distance from the pitch issue. Retractable or removable 'stands' that cover the track for football games seem the obvious solution, but you never know with the Gollivans.

All we've got to do is try and stay in the Prem till then....  roll

Congratulations!

I think that cool smiley with shades should be replaced with one that is wearing binoculars! There have been some great joke e-mails about season tickets coming with a set of binoculars or team sponsorship by the likes of Nikon or Pentax!  big_smile

Seriously not typing this a sore Spurs fan who did n't get the stadium because I did nt think it right for Spurs anyway, and think it has been used all along as a lever to push Haringey Council to let Spurs develop WHL with Council funding/backing. Well done to WHU for being brave enough to do this, - a bit sad to see Upton Park go but needs must!
