Topic: Congratulations to Steve Balkwill & Sons of Icarus previously The Fury

If you read the Simon McBride thread you may have seen Pete’s video of a band called The Fury. Since the date this was filmed, the guys in The Fury have discovered they weren’t the first band to use this name and have changed it to “The Sons of Icarus”. Remember this name as you will hear it a lot in 2011.

The Sons of Icarus recently took part in an “Ultimate Band Contest” organised by Marshall Amplification and they WON! What’s more, our own Steve Balkwill, who plays lead guitar in the band, was named the best guitarist. Well done, Steve.

You can see videos of the band here:
You Want It All This is killer. big_smile
Long Way Down & Confusion Road
Beauty Queen

If you are feeling strong there are some videos of the band at the Marshall Amps contest on their youtube channel. There are also some nice quotes here from people in the business. Of course, you can also find them on facebook and myspace.

Although they are more classic rock in the mould of AC/DC & Airbourne than the blues, they can play more bluesy stuff as evidenced by the video of Long Way Down & Confusion Road and some great country rock on Beauty Queen. Steve is a very keen fan of Joe and takes every opportunity to talk to his band mates about Joe and to try to introduce some blues guitar into songs the band perform. Try harder Steve! big_smile

Thanks for the kind words Phil!

If anyone's intersted, 'The Fury' met almost two years ago at our college and wrote a bit of blues/classic rock material, but have since evolved into a more modern hard/rock band, as evident in the two most recently recorded tracks 'You Want It All' and 'Not Myself'. We changed the band name to 'Sons of Icarus' about two weeks ago(on the day we won the Marshall Amps endorsement) due to potential legal complications etc.

P.S. Joe is my number one influence. smile

P.P.S. Upcoming gigs include January 30th at Camden Underworld with glam heroes 'Little Caesar' and 12th February at Camden Barfly for the HMV Next Big Thing Festival with awesome USA rock band 'Rival Sons'.

..best of luck in 2011 Steve!... what was the thinking behind the new name... how did you come up with that.... just out of interest!?   wink

Hey Pete, not really sure how I came up with it lol...
I think it was inspired by the 'Led Zeppelin' line of thinking, i.e. they were told that they'd fail like a lead zeppelin, but went on to become the biggest band in the world, so I thought it would be kinda tongue-in-cheek to relate in to Icarus somehow (hopefully we won't fly too close to the sun and end up crashing/burning, haha).

We're playing upstairs at the Relentless Garage in London tomorrow night at about 9PM incase anyone's about.
Other London gigs include the previously mentioned, 30th January @ 7PM (Camden Underworld) and the 12th February 8PM (HMV Next Big Thing Festival at the Camden Barfly).

Hi Steve,

I've been meaning to add my guess on your thinking for the name for a few days and not got round to it. I'm pleased to see I was pretty accurate in my assumption. Swan Song Logo

I put the above London dates on the Gig Guide last night (check your e-mail when you have a mo.)

Hope to see you soon.

Phil and Pete, if you get a chance, you should come down to the Barfly gig on the 12th February. There's a really good lineup for that.

Cheers for putting our gigs up in that thread, had a good gig last night at the Camden Underworld.
