Re: New Joanne Shaw Taylor cd!

Joey - please don't be swayed by Greenose's somewhat negative view of "Diamonds" - I urge you to grab the CD and make up your own mind about this. I don't know how many plays of the album Greenose has got through, but I'm finding it a real grower. The more I play it the more I want to play it. Sure, "White Sugar" was a stunning debut and had some stand-out tracks, not least "Blackest Day", that made an immediate impact, but for me "Diamonds" is a better overall album. It's not all riff-driven blues rock - there's lots of real nice picking and a couple of really sweet soulfull tracks on there too.
I believe the songs on the debut album were written over a few years  (I'm sure I remember Joanne saying she wrote "Blackest Day" when she was about fourteen) and lean heavily on her early influences such as Ablert Collins, SRV, and The Hoax. I feel "Diamonds" is more about where Joanne is now - developing her own sound - sure those influences are still there in her playing, but they no longer dominate.
A contributor to another forum I frequent has retracted his description of her as "a female SRV clone" since hearing the new album - that has to be a move forwards.

I'll be objective too.................... Great Stuff!

This is an excellent album - must be a top 5 of 2010 for me - its the kind of album you just want to keep playing again and again!!!

Re: New Joanne Shaw Taylor cd!

I am not swayed.........he offered his opinion and i respect it as well as yours......i have already pre ordered the cd, so i will listen for myself when i get it........i know i will get some heat for this....but i just hope she doesnt sway away from blues in general........i realize the artist has to do what they have to do.........wish there were a slow blues number or 2 on there...but at the same time im excited to hear the disc...............and as i said...........regardless of whether i like the new cd...i will certainly go see her again when she comes back to Callahans........she is AWESOME live.

7 plays in 14 days, it's not grown much for me yet. There are elements I like, others I'm not so keen on, but my overall impression has not changed.

It's not really correct to paraphrase, so I'll use his full quote:

I’ve downloaded another bunch of tracks from Diamonds in the Dirt and I'm still at about 6/10 based on what I hear, I think it could be a grower but isn’t as immediately grabby as White Sugar. I too applaud JST for not relying on covers and also happily withdraw any SRV clone comments made previously as well, she is developing her own style which I generally like. The album (and I now have most of it!) is just a bit dark and gritty which I normally like but it doesn’t ease off, I think dour was a word I used before.

So my last words on this will be that I'd encourage other forum users to get the album and make up their own minds.

Re: New Joanne Shaw Taylor cd!

Hmm, interesting comments. For the record, I don't think anyone here has made any extremely negative comments about the album. For me it's good to read a bit of discussion, if anything it makes me more interested to hear the album. Sometimes it's better to approach an album with realistic expectations than the simple "it's great". I'll look forward to getting my own copy in Hartlepool. Lynn

That's very good news! I love her first album and I will definitely give the new album a listen. Thanks for the info.

@mbcl: Martin, please say hello to Joanne from me and tell her I would love to see her perform in Germany.
I'd say that Germany is a very good stomping ground for blues/rock musicians. If Joanne could get a slot at one of the many German blues or rock festivals, I'm sure she would win lots of new fans.

Re: New Joanne Shaw Taylor cd!

I only received the cd from Ruf Germany on Saturday, I have played it a few times now and I really like it. I love the new songs all should be played in her set  I think. There are enough super slow blues tunes on her first cd so this is an upbeat cd so the mix of the 2 should be perfect for the tour.

Re: New Joanne Shaw Taylor cd!

Received my copy of Blues Review magazine yesterday and not only is Joanne on the front cover with a very nice article about her inside, but she is also on the cover of the Blues Sampler CD that came with the magazine. Her song, "Can't Keep Living Like This", off her new album is included on the sampler.

In the story about her, our own Joe Bonamassa expressed his positive support of Joanne. Joe is quoted as saying,

"What I see in Joanne that sets her apart from the rest is the ability to write a great song. Not only is she a killer guitarist and singer, but find yourself walking away from her shows singing her songs as well."

That's very high praise coming from someone who is riding the peek of the Blues/Rock music scene. cool

In addition to all of this is the fact that on the back cover of the magazine both Joanne and Oli Brown's newest releases are advertised under the heading "The Brits Are Back!" smile

Some interesting views in here. It's definitely heightened my anticipation (and impatience) on receiving my pre-ordered CD. I just hope it arrives before going to see her in Topsham next week!!

Re: New Joanne Shaw Taylor cd!

Well i have listened one time through........so keep that in mind.........I like it...its good,,,definately a bit harder than the first cd....you can really feel Jo's "angst" is guess for lack of a better word,,,and where she was in life when recording this.
I think it will make for some good live music...........HOWEVER..........i do miss the slow blues number....it think this cd needed it............someone said she had enough slow blues songs on her last one and this will mix well for live performances........well thats all great but to me its also about each cd itself.........and i definately miss that...hope she returns next cd with some slowed down blues like in the first cd.

I do like it,,,,just feel like something missing on this cd.  by the way,,,,after seeing Joanne 2x i will not miss another local performance..........highly recommend go see her live!!!!!!!!  its kinda shocking to watch her play that guitar!!!! shocking in a good way!!!!!!!!

Re: New Joanne Shaw Taylor cd!

That's Joanne booked for The Caves, Edinburgh on 20 May and Aberdeen (Lemon Tree) on 22 May - I will have to get up the road sharpish from Roger Waters in Manchester on the 21st but it has to be done.

Love the new album.

Joanne's new tour has been booked by the Gig Cartel who are a London based promoter. They really should do some research before they book gigs though. My local promoter has booked Larry Miller on 19th May and Oli Brown on 21st May in the same venue. A check by the Gig Cartel could have established this, instead they risk each of the three shows having poorer turnouts because the local blues rock fans choose to go to only one or two of these shows rather than all three in three days. So while I'm glad to see that's she's coming back to my city, I'm disappointed at the date and will have to consider which of these acts I'm most keen to see.  hmm

Re: New Joanne Shaw Taylor cd!

It may be that joannes tour was booked before the others. I know Joanne was asking if Virge and Gabe were free a few months ago ( which weren't). impressed she is with the gig cartel, top promoters.

Re: New Joanne Shaw Taylor cd!

Yes maybe, certain the common link was the venue owner, he probabaly just saw the £££ without thinking that three shows of the same genre in three days might lead to reduced attendences at each.

The Gig Cartel is good for nationwide publicity (magazines, newspapers ect), but weaker in localities. An example was Philip Sayce's Newcastle show, which only had a crowd of 40 due to nearby shows by Joanne and Matt Schofield on the same night...

Re: New Joanne Shaw Taylor cd!

I see what you are saying Duncan but there will always be clashes. it's no fault of the gig cartel, remember there are more than promoter involved, Phillip, Aynsley and Matt all have their own promoters, it's a little unfair to say it's the gig cartel, who got it wrong.
Vata a have had clashes, if I remember correctly we played a gig, with Aynsley, Matt and Joe all doing gigs very close buy. We actually did well on the night so was very happy.
When scheduling a tour you don't get a long list of dates available from a venue, you get a very small choice. Often it's take it or leave it. So if they is a clash, you either do a gig in that town or not. Me I would take it, simply to see how we compete.
Incindently the biggest crowd killing clash we have had was and England match. I think that shows were the problems lie:(
I will mention it Joanne but she is probably aware anyway.

Good comments Martin. Hopefully people will be pleased with the great music in one weekend and go to see all the shows. Atleast in this case there is no direct clashes. smile Ha, I'd even see Grace wotsit before watching an England game.  lol  lol

Me - I'm thinking it's been many many years since I last visited Edinburgh and this could be as good a reason as any to put that right. Like a mini festival with added time for sightseeing.  big_smile
