Feedback is Rush's tribute to their rock gods.  My fave on it is the oft covered Eddie Cochran hit, "Summertime Blues".

Yes, equal parts hommage to Blue Cheer and the Who, which were both themselves outstanding covers....

Loved the Who's "Young Man Blues" cover as well...

They say the band used to warm up to this song to get the juices flowin'.  Ennio Morricone did the original, but I like this one better.

On a recent ACDC tribute sampler from Classic Rock Magazine, UK band 'The Union' served up a magnificent cover of "Rock and Roll ain't noise pollution".

It is an acoustic, harmonica, vocal masterpiece. I'll hesitate for saying it is better than the original because the legions of ACDC fans here will slaughter me, but it is reverently different enough to be able to say I think even Angus would like it.

I think Melissa Etheridge's version of "Piece of my heart" IS better that Janis' and 'The Mother Stations' version of "Fool for a pretty Face" humbles Humble Pie's, while Bonnie Rait shines brighter on Richard Thompsons "Dimming of the day".

Now if that isn't a post full of heresy, I don't what is.

Never heard of The Mother Station until I saw this post. Being a Humble Pie fan thought I would check them out. What a spectacular sound this band had.

And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Glad you liked it. The vocal talent is Susan Marshall, an incredible voice, I'm sure you agree. 'Brand New Bag' was their best album of 3 I think it was. The guitarist and co-vocalist was the superb Gwin Spencer, one of the very best female lead players I've ever heard. Get this album. It is old now but there isn't a dud track on it. That I guarantee

Re: Covers that equal or better the originals

Shinedown does a very nice cover of Skynyrd's "Simple Man".  Never had heard of that band before but my college age daughter was playing it in the car one day.  I told her it was a remake of an original.  She had never heard skynyrd's version.  I rectified that situation

As blasphemous as it may be to some on this board, I really like Joe's version of "Tea for One" much better than Led Zeppelin's.

Mike,
I couldn't find Mother Station, but did find some solo stuff of Susan Marshall off her Little Red album.  There's a fine duet with Lucinda Williams covering the Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down".  Are you familiar with that cd?

Seriously, it is not "unsung" to me. Not only do I wholeheartedly agree with you, it could be my favorite JB song, although there are 4 or 5 in contention.

And it was delivered with aplomb there, Bill!  I would (maybe Jefe also) put forth it is unsung in the periphery of musical excellence among those who "declare" something to be top of the heap with presumed authority...although they always seem to lag a bit behind reality.  "They" are sleeping on this one, or attached to some inferior offering(s), often due to some ill-conceived notion of......"discovery rights" or something else strange interfering with open ears and eyes and minds...

edit: "some inferior offering" does not mean the original version of Stop!.  I mean other crap culled from the musical sewers which they are trying to tell me smells like a proverbial rose...but hellyeah I mean bluesnots or soulsnips.

Despite reports to the contrary I am not crazy.

Found two nice ones this morning:
Sass Jordan covering one of my favorite Eagle's songs, "Ol' 55", even though it was written by Tom Waits.

Rising blues star Damon Fowler gets everyone on the dance floor to the  Amazing Rhythm Aces' "Third Rate Romance".

Re: Covers that equal or better the originals

The thing I sometimes find with covers is that people will swear that someone did the best version of the song. An example is As The Crow Flies. People will tell you that Sardinas version or Rory Gallagher's version is the best, yet they've never taken the tme to listen to Tony Joe White's version... not that I think that is the best version, but it can ring a little hollow when they can't make a full assessment.

The great thing about covers I've found is that they've led me to some great music, through hearing covers of say Gary Moore or Aerosmith, two acts I really liked when I started listening to music is that they led me to early British blues and then I listened to the earlier blues artists as I wanted to hear the songs that Mayall, The Yardbirds etc recorded. I do tend to find though once you hear the original you can quite often find it hard to beat, they have that distinct sound that makes them so appealing for others to play.  There's something special in hearing an artist record one of their own songs and while other artists can sometimes cover it and improve it musically, often the covers lack something of the original -  in blues this is usually the vocal phrasing that the originator used. I find it hard for example to hear any covers of say Muddy Waters or Howlin Wolf that was bettered. Usually artists make their versions too guitar driven and it takes away the magic of the original version. Others would state it comes down to personal taste, yet I believe it represents them looking to hear a particular sound, and by listening to only the covers they can often miss the differentials that made the songs so good in the first place.

Re: Covers that equal or better the originals

Been listening all weekend to Leroy Powell and the guy is scary good.  His solo album Paranoid, very bluesy, includes his only cover, Sonny Boy Williamson's "Good Morning Little School".  I've got a live version here that's pretty good, but the studio version just towers over any previous recordings (Ten Years After, Jonny Lang to name a couple).  If any of you can download it it'll be just like a Lays potato chip - you'll want more.  This guy's clearly the best thing I've come across this year.
