I like John's work too, although opinion about him often seems divided.
I find it easier to try and forget what the perception of him is, or what many people seem to expect him to be. Listen to the music and judge it for what it is.
I didn't get (if that is the right word) 'Continuum' at first, but after seeing the live DVD performance of it, the album became a constant play for a long while.
It's unfortunate ( I suppose) that he is, or has been, derided by some but that just happens. That said, some of the humour is very funny, so its important not to get too precious about these things.
Spider put a link in the 'Gear' section a while back which was an animated clip of a spoof 'Mayer Strat Sales Pitch' and is a good example of this. But I can watch it without it affecting my opinion of him.
The guy is good, very good and has developed the style and approach that works for him. I tend not to rely too much on what guitarists say publicly when attempting to define what they are as a person and should I try or want to know anyway?
Commercial success affords a degree of financial freedom to be artistically free, hopefully. If he is being true to his own musical instincts and that pleases some people, if not all the people, who am I to argue?
And, if they are talking about you, you must be doing something right. Didn't someone famous say that?
