Topic: John Mayer

Alright guys, this may or may not have been discussed before but I just wandered what peoples views on John Mayer are. I have to admit I'm a big fan but I know there is a lot of bad feeling towards him. As a musician I can't fault him, each one of his albums has had its own sound showing great variety in his work. Some people pick on him for starting his career playing a more 'pop' sound however from starting as a solo musician playing in coffee shops this is understandable. As a person I fully get that he often talks out of his arse and, especially as a no nonsence english, he can really make me cringe! Anyway, just wondered what peoples thoughts were....

Re: John Mayer

I like John's work too, although opinion about him often seems divided.

I find it easier to try and forget what the perception of him is, or what many people seem to expect him to be. Listen to the music and judge it for what it is.

I didn't get (if that is the right word) 'Continuum' at first, but after seeing the live DVD performance of it, the album became a constant play for a long while.

It's unfortunate ( I suppose) that he is, or has been, derided by some but that just happens. That said, some of the humour is very funny, so its important not to get too precious about these things.

Spider put a link in the 'Gear' section a while back which was an animated clip of a spoof 'Mayer Strat Sales Pitch' and is a good example of this. But I can watch it without it affecting my opinion of him.

The guy is good, very good and has developed the style and approach that works for him. I tend not to rely too much on what guitarists say publicly when attempting to define what they are as a person and should I try or want to know anyway?

Commercial success affords a degree of financial freedom to be artistically free, hopefully. If he is being true to his own musical instincts and that pleases some people, if not all the people, who am I to argue?

And, if they are talking about you, you must be doing something right. Didn't someone famous say that?

I like to hear him play his guitar.  Don't particularly care for his voice and sometimes he just needs to STFU about things

Well, I know I've been told that on multiple occasions.

Re: John Mayer

Good guitarist...very good, but I don't like his direction and style much.

Re: John Mayer

I was on the Mayer bandwagon for a period, but his last album was about as genuine as his lifestyle.  Look for his next album to be a duet of all pop songs with Taylor Swift.  Fame has completely ruined him.

Re: John Mayer

I just can't dig it. More of a celebrity that happens to play great guitar...
There's no rawness there, just sheen...and more sheen...

Taylor now won't have anything to do with John. Had a falling out apparently.

Love John Mayer. Brilliant songwriter, decent singer, great guitarist. People try to make him a guitar hero, he never will be just that. As for what he says publicly, sometimes he has foot in mouth disorder. I think sometimes he tries to either be cool or artistic and just goes too far with what he says. Some stuff he says and you go, "Wow, that's a very cool thought." Othertimes you cringe and go "Should've shut up." But musically he's brilliant. Actually loved the last album, Perfectly Lonely is my theme song.  cool The idea of being single because you want to be instead of having to be is something I really relate to.

I had to reread the old thread and see what you meant Geoff. I think I was politically overly sensitive at that time. I took exception to JDawg more than Mayer. Although I was not much of a Mayer fan at the time. I have gotten a lot more tolerable of his personality and his music is much more listen able for me. I like the Trio stuff. Saw him at Crossroads.

I apologize in retrospect to the old topic it really wasn't that bad and it really was just about you liking the DVD. It should of been a topic for those that have seen it not for those that like hating on Mayer. He has a Joe B LP so he can't be all bad now right. I'm going to ask for that DVD for Christmas now.
