As we'd say here in Scotland  "Aye, right!".  Somebody having a laugh here and, criminally, no mention of Paul Rodgers!

Interestingly, Bon Scott makes the list at 16 while Brian Johnson does not feature at all.

Re: "Axl Rose Named Greatest Lead Singer"

boggles the mind doesn't it. Geddy Lee and Debbie Harry? I love Rush but will be the first to say that Geddy doesn't sing all that well. At least his voice finally changed as he went into adolescence at age 45. Where is Van Morrison and Lowell George?

Guess it's obvious the people who dreamed up this list haven't given up the hashpipe.
If Axl's numero uno then I'm dos.

Re: "Axl Rose Named Greatest Lead Singer"

I guess, polls like this should be taken with a pinch of salt!  hmm

Mick Jagger has my vote!

Re: "Axl Rose Named Greatest Lead Singer"

That is a very strange list.  I know polls like this tend to throw up the odd surprise and they are very subjective, and particularly with singers it is difficult to compare as there are so many different styles.  However, this list is so far removed from my perception of what is good that it compels me to comment.

There are probably 14-15 names in this list who I wouldn’t have listed in my top 100.  In fact I’d barely recognise them as good singers, let alone great singers, let alone the best of the best – and that includes Axl, who’d probably JUST sneak into my top 200.

At the same time there are a number of truly great singers who I am astonished not to see even mentioned.

Looking through the list I’d venture that some people have voted based on singing quality, but most have voted based on supposed iconic stature and the ability to lead as a frontman (which doesn’t necessarily require the ability to actually sing well).  If voting on the former, where on earth are the likes of Paul Rodgers, Steve Perry, David Coverdale, Danny Bowes, Nancy Wilson, etc.  Even Karen Carpenter could have sung the socks off most people in that list.

If voting on the latter, what about Dave Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, Prince, etc etc.

It just goes to show that the readers of these polls tend to be influenced most by what they’ve just heard on the radio, or what the record companies tell them is good, rather than forming any considered opinions of their own.

Re: "Axl Rose Named Greatest Lead Singer"

Just off the top of my head I'd have to say the Motown singers would be hard to beat and I'd put Stevie Wonder a the top of my list.  Not too many people can cover his music.  Otis, Marvin, Aretha, Al, Sam Cooke, etc, etc, were all gifted and I know I'm forgeting a bunch.

Re: "Axl Rose Named Greatest Lead Singer"

He's a horrible singer and has got worse since I saw him live in 1993. Nice to see Bon Scott included (and Johnson not included!), but there's really so many great singers, male and female who have been omitted from that list.

Don't know where me head was at when I posted the above.  I guess it'd be a quasi senior moment, though I ain't a senior, knowwhatImean Vern?
Alright, lead Singers - Like some have said there's really too many good ones and all lists are subjective anyway, but if I were to name a few that'd be.....

Roger Daltry, Robert Plant, Lowell George, Greg Allman, David Coverdale. Freddie Mercury, Paul Rodgers, Mick Jagger.

More recent studs are:

Reggie Watts of the Seattle group Maktub.  Reggie has a five octave range and uses it effectively.  Amos Lee, Tony Lucca, Davy Knowles and Marcus Bonfanti are all very, very good, but special mention should be made for Peter Winterville of The Union.  I saw in some other posts the names Paul Rodgers and Chris Cornell as being the greatest and if you listen to Peter you'll hear both those guys.  The guy was born to be a rock singer.

No Gregg Allman is a shame. Gregg's the man. I don't agree with Axl being number 1, but that's me.

I'm not disagreeing with you about William Bailey's singing inabilities, but I will say so what? Ronald B. Scott (or Brian Johnson for that matter), David Lee Roth, James D. Morrison, and Michael Jagger?  Not really good singers any of them, but at the front of the band with the microphone is a more theatrical version of lead "singer".  Adds to the musical presentation but standing alone it is terrible singing in my opinion.  At least Vincent Furnier can actually sing real good when he wants.
Just another dang silly list voted on by others not You or Me...

Re: "Axl Rose Named Greatest Lead Singer"

The omission that floors me is THE VOICE, Roy Orbison. A singer so good other acts refused to share billing due to intimidation. I guess the list was just fairly modern?
