Wow. I saw JB last year in Orlando and it was a great show. I can't believe how much better it was this year. I've seen a lot of concerts in my years, and I don't know if I've ever seen a guitar player so "on" as Joe last night. Emotion, dynamics, guitar pyrotechnics. It was an amazing show.
The full band version of "If Heartaches Were Nickels" just floored me. It's always been a favorite, and the performance last night was a tour de force. I would have been satisfied if the show ended there it was that good.
Joe's acoustic jam (based around "Woke Up Dreaming") was the most impressive display of dynamics in acoustic guitar playing I've ever seen. One minute it was a wall of sound, the next minute slow and sweet. I've never seen anyone show such a huge dynamic range with just an acoustic guitar before. Every person in the Plaza had a huge grin after that song, and had to pick their jaws off the floor. Simply stunning.
Pat Travers joined Joe for "Further On Up The Road" and "Blues De Luxe" which were both really cool.
It was also great to hear a couple new songs, "Slow Train" among them. Can't wait for the new album.
Another thing I loved is that a lot of the songs that overlapped with last year's show (Ballad of John Henry, Sloe Gin, etc) seemed to have slightly different arrangements. That really kept it fun and interesting.
In all, I was just in awe. The show last year was great, so how can a band (and a guitar player) get so much better in just one year?
