Re: NFL 2010/11 SEAS0N

Regardless of how your team may have done yesterday, the GREAT news is no one was hurt by some fool careening headfirst with helmet top leading into them.  In fact, it was OBVIOUS the players get the message, you could really see it in their play-KUDOS for a friggin' change! What motivates them is not conscience about hurting someone, nor even getting fined.  In my opinion the biggest motivation is not being able to play due to suspension.  These guys may be grownups, fueled and fired up on steroids and HGH, over-celebrating, overrated, rough gym class intramurals superstars with prima donna attitudes, but one thing I KNOW, is going back to when they first fell in love with FOOTBALL, that they really, really want to play.  More than any shenanigans off the field will ever indicate.  More than just about anything.  Hope they stay the new and improved course.
Heck, we even saw the return of shoestring tackles! and shoulder pads (as opposed to head) ramming. Niiiiiiiiiiicccccccccceee!!!

Chicago is an Algonquin Indian name meaning garlic field...and Chicago did stink up the playing field yesterday! American Indian football fanatics rejoice that the Redskins & Chiefs are both looking very good so far this year.

Yeah, Cutler was one of the main culprits, but honestly I blame Lovie Smith.
He throws the challenge flag when they get to the one yard line, on a play that wasn't really close to being a touchdown.
Then Cutler sneaks in, extends the ball over the goal line (clearly over the goal line when viewing the replays), gets it batted away and the Skins recover and dumba** Smith doesn't challenge! Even if you are not sure, you HAVE to throw the challenge flag there...an absolutely critical point in the game! If they score, its 21-10 and the Bears have the momentum. Instead, the Skins gain the "Mo" and win the game. Lots of other mistakes by the Bears, but the game turned on that play.
They can't fire Lovie fast enough as far as I'm concerned.

That was one of the stupidest non calls I have ever seen.  A Dolphin clearly recovers the ball in the end zone for a touchback  and first and 10 on their own 20.   mad

have to disagree there Rocket. after watching Kornholer and Wilbutt yesterday I believe what we had this weekend is just as much an anomaly as the week prior. I did see one head to head that could have been called, and don't remember what game it was. I am not convinced that the players "get it", every active player I have seen interviewed on the subject has said that they will not change the way they play the game. It's a bang-bang split second decision on how to stop the runner or receiver, sometimes they don't have time to contort their body into a perfect tackling position. I don't think they could change even if they wanted to. So they go with what they have been taught, what is instinctive nature, what the game is about. It is definitely not about cheap hits on a defenseless ball carrier. It's only been one week, let's see what happens going forward. There will be more hits, fines, and suspensions for some players just trying to do their jobs. What about the entry level guy making $400-$500K, he gets in for one or two plays and ends up with a $50,000 fine because he didn't contort. I guess that would be incredibly bad luck.

Re: NFL 2010/11 SEAS0N

Rocket,
I'm with you on the penalty and especially the suspension, because not playing is hitting them where it hurts more than the $$$.  Also, before Paterno's comment, my hubby and brother were discussing while watching an Eagles game that the modern helmet is part of the problem, being that it is used as a ram rod sometimes and the players are playing the game differently because of the helmet.  This is the line of the week in SI from Rodney Harrison. (retired NFL) "Guys are so lazy nowadays, they don't want to tackle. They just want the big kill shot." Yikes!!

If anything good comes from bad, it is that this topic is being revisited.  Also, not NFL but on the same weekend a Rutgers football was paralyzed bringing back to mind that Penn State player from NJ who miraculously walked again after a spinal cord injury, against a 3% odds of ever walking again. Anyone interested in this topic, pick up the current issue of Sports Illustrated...The Hits That Are Changing the Game...  November 1, 2010.

Anyone who has a child, grandchild or loved one playing football, seriously consider the information in this article.  Thumbs up to Boston University for their research.  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/14/sport … tball.html

I'm a little upset for DeSean Jackson, he is my favorite Eagle, who has now suffered his 2nd concussion in 11 months.  He is so fast, but really thin and small, very vulnerable . We live in the same town, my son ran into him at the food store in the produce section picking out oranges, which was cool!  DeSean has really matured since he was a rookie.  He ran 2 football camps this summer, 1 at my children's former school and the other in a really tough neighborhood where he is serving as a great role model.

Love the game, keep it clean, as realistically possible for a contact sport.

Tough break for Tony Romo. I see some shaking up going on...

Agreed on the obvious dirty play but the QB that throws high to his WR and leaves him hanging for the setup shot should share part of the blame. A local fan wrote that the helmet hits would be cut way down if the face guards were eliminated. Not a bad idea. Great for dentists.  yikes That would almost eliminate the helmet grab tackle as well.
Rick

That fan got the idea from none other than Joe Paterno.  Take the face guards off and watch notorious tough guys turn into dandy creampuffs.  They would learn to arm tackle in one easy lesson!

I just heard that the NFL reviewed all the plays from last week's games and there was not one helmet hit, and only 3 minor concussions. Several notorious "hit men" were observed pulling up when an obvious "kill shot" was presented. It looks like the league action got their attention.  smile

Unfortunately Angela, this has been allowed in the game far too long. Remember this guy? "They call me Assassin".....watch for the head shot he puts on Earl Campbell at around the 2:15 mark and the hit he put on Sammy White of the Vikings at the 3:00 mark. Then remember, this was back in the 1970s.

It's been too long that this idea of "head hunting" has gone on. Improve the helmets? No, that will just make them more lethal. Maybe we should go back to a padded leather helmet with no face mask? Then we'll see how many helmet to helmet hits there are.

Looks like the Raiders are baaaaacccccccccckkkkk!!!!! I like Chiefs and Raiders both, so it was a very good game.
Cleveland beats New England, Detroit had an upset over the New York Jets, but one player's stupidity cost the game, essentially...Buffalo Bills live up to the bill and buffaloed themselves in another close one...And my 49ers did not lose today-it really helps to not even be playing.

Chargers look like they only really play when the chips are down and their season is nigh on done. Go figure that they continue to own Manning and the Colts. The great QB is hapless with no running game and an O line that barely gives him time to release the ball.  We'll take it. The sagging Raiders next and the Chiefs in sight. Maybe they'll make the playoffs after all.  roll

How about them Bears? After embarrassing themselves against the Giants on national TV, they have played like a real team and (dare I say it) a contender! They beat a pretty good Eagles team...regardless of the sour grapes that Jason Peters spewed.

Re: NFL 2010/11 SEAS0N

OK, ask me how many times I watched the replay Eagles/Giants last 14 seconds of the game last night???  My football weekend started out really bad on the college level when my Wildcats were stomped out on a red field Friday night by Washington after beating the #1 seed in an amazing game the week before. (I'd never seen a red field before, its disturbing to the eyes)

But overall, it was a GREAT week for any Philadelphia sports fans, always in the shadow of New York.  Cliff Lee choses the Phillies over the Yankees, the Flyers beat the Islanders 4-1 and the Eagles pull off a nearly impossible 4th quarter win over the Giants on their turf!

I FEEL Good!!  smile And I'm happy to go to work today and face my 2 Giant co-workers!

I couldn't believe Coughlin was berating his rookie punter in front of an entire stadium AND a national TV audience. That was absolutely a bush league move on his part and he lost any respect I ever had for him.
Lots of blame to go around for the Giants...maybe he should have looked in the mirror and asked how the @#!*  he and the rest of his team let the Eagles come back from 21 points down in the 4th quarter, or perhaps why his special teams couldn't make a tackle on that final play.

Re: NFL 2010/11 SEAS0N

Yes Bill, that was bush league by Coughlin! I happened to be watching that game while doing some paper work yesterday and I almost turned it off when the Giants went up 3 touchdowns in the fourth. But then I thought hey, the Eagles have Vick and you just never know. He really is the one who turned that thing around and if most didn't think he was the MVP of the league before that, then that sure solidified my belief that he is. We all know what he did in the past, but you can't take away how he has come back and led that team. What I also thought was a bit bush league was DeSean Jackson running down the goal line instead of just getting in the end zone for the game winner. I almost wish that Giant's player that was chasing him would have been closer to slap the ball out of his hands at the one yard line. I'll bet Andy Reid had a word or two with Mr. Jackson after the game.
