Topic: Orlando, FL - Sat, Dec 4th

Wow.  I saw JB last year in Orlando and it was a great show.  I can't believe how much better it was this year.  I've seen a lot of concerts in my years, and I don't know if I've ever seen a guitar player so "on" as Joe last night.  Emotion, dynamics, guitar pyrotechnics.  It was an amazing show.

The full band version of "If Heartaches Were Nickels" just floored me.  It's always been a favorite, and the performance last night was a tour de force.  I would have been satisfied if the show ended there it was that good.

Joe's acoustic jam (based around "Woke Up Dreaming") was the most impressive display of dynamics in acoustic guitar playing I've ever seen.  One minute it was a wall of sound, the next minute slow and sweet.  I've never seen anyone show such a huge dynamic range with just an acoustic guitar before.  Every person in the Plaza had a huge grin after that song, and had to pick their jaws off the floor.  Simply stunning.

Pat Travers joined Joe for "Further On Up The Road" and "Blues De Luxe" which were both really cool.

It was also great to hear a couple new songs, "Slow Train" among them.  Can't wait for the new album.

Another thing I loved is that a lot of the songs that overlapped with last year's show (Ballad of John Henry, Sloe Gin, etc) seemed to have slightly different arrangements.  That really kept it fun and interesting.

In all, I was just in awe.  The show last year was great, so how can a band (and a guitar player) get so much better in just one year?

Re: Orlando, FL - Sat, Dec 4th

You know what?  Jacksonville was great, really great,  but Orlando was off the charts.  We were sitting 3rd row center and Joe was playing almost on top of us.  He seemed to be having the time of his life and the sound was just amazing.  I did't want it to end.  Ken spotted the extra amp on stage when we walked in so we suspected there would be a surprise guest but had no idea who it would be.  Pat Travers and Joe trading licks back and forth was fun to watch.  Plus, it's always a treat to hear 'Blues Deluxe' and the way Joe sang that song last night gave me chills. And the way he sang Sloe Gin was unbelievably moving.  I also love the intro to Mountain Time.  Then there's Woke Up Dreamin.  Forget it, I could just go on and on.  You guys know what I mean.

If there was any complaint at all, it would be the seats.  They changed the seating since last year and had us crammed in there pretty tight last night.  If you had to get up for any reason, everybody in your row had to get up.  Thank goodness people weren't moving around too much in our row.

You couldn't help but notice they are now traveling with TWO  buses and the semi. Quite a production.  We didn't hang around after this show, since we had already said hello to the band the night before in Jacksonville and decided to give other fans a chance to meet and greet.  All in all, it was an unforgettable evening.   cool

Hey Everybody,
Yeah sorry about the seats too.. I walked in and the floor was empty.... I was like ummmmm are we in the right place.  The nice people ( and they are truly great all of them.) have started doing standing shows as well.  We will work on the seats tonight to give you all a little more room..

Re: Orlando, FL - Sat, Dec 4th

On the plus side, the Plaza recently revamped their sound system, and the sound was outstanding (not sure how much was the venue and how much was changes to your setup since the last tour).

Joe, what was the guitar you played on Happier Times?  Double cut, bound body.  I couldn't read the headstock.

Re: Orlando, FL - Sat, Dec 4th

The thing I noticed right away was how great the sound was last night at the plaza. Jacksonville is a beautiful theater, and we had a great time, but the sound of Joe's guitar sounded a little more distant than I would have liked. Still sounded great, but just not quite loud and in your face enough for me, (maybe it was our seats). I've noticed the same thing the other times we've seen Joe there, so I think it's just the theater acoustics.
This was not an issue at the Plaza, as soon as Dave tested out Joe's guitar, I knew we were in for a nice loud rock show. Not too loud but just perfect, great sound.
I'm also loving how Joe has made some subtle changes to the songs, the acoustic solo piece prior to Woke up Dreaming was amazing.
Looking forward to Hollywood!

Re: Orlando, FL - Sat, Dec 4th

I also wanted to mention that I entered the theatre with a one-two punch of Gov't Mule and Iron Maiden as pre-show background music.  When "2 Minutes To Midnight" started blasting, I got pretty pumped up.

And the "Final Countdown" music at the end of the show was hilarious.  All those small touches really put this over the top.  I'm 37, I've been to many, many concerts of all sizes, and this was one of the very best.

So far there are two versions of this on YT, this one (lacks any bass) or another one which is bassy but a distorted mess.

Love Pat and this rocks!

I knew Rockin Ron would leave a comment on YouTube! Well Carl, I'll take this distorted mess as it to me sounds better (I can at least hear the guitars per what they are actually playing better) than that beautiful video with tinny telephone quality audio and fantastic Bogie Bowles' drumming;

Re: Orlando, FL - Sat, Dec 4th

You all have put the show in perfect perspective!  The sound at the Plaza WAS incredible.  Joe's interaction with the audience was also very nice.  I brought a couple friends (who are NOW big Joe fans!) to the show along with my Son.

I just frickin loved the WHOLE show!  I only wish I had purchased tickets to some of the other FLA shows. (A Lesson Learned for next year)

Joe --- your singing of the tunes has really improved over last year and your older shows.  The band was SO tight!!  I agree with one of the previous posts....HOW CAN YOU ALL GET SO MUCH BETTER IN ONE YEAR!? (I saw you last year at Ruth Eckerd Hall...and THAT show was AWESOME!)  Wow!

Thank You Joe!  Thank You So Very Much!

Re: Orlando, FL - Sat, Dec 4th

Joe and fans:

I'm a old blues harper who stumbled upon the PBS special in the back ground as the wifey rolled the channels and I yelled across the house, is that guy black or white?
after last nights show, I think the answer is clear, cultural soul in white body!

My P.R. wife said, "he's a col white boy!"  Wow was she right.  We did the $150 donation to WMFE and got good seats on the aisle.  I was brought to tears literally on the opening blues.  Last kiss before I die wiped my mind.  I

was absolutely mesmerized by the pure unadulterated talent and humility Joe presents.  SRV and Hendrix as well as all the gr8 blues legends will high five Joe one day.  The Little Walter guttural vocals and deep south tones of blues guitar legends ad naseum mixed with screaming riffs blue my socks off.   By far, the best guitarist I have ever seen in person.

Buddy Guy in '95 tour played a wide variety of forms if you will, reciting the licks of the greats as if effortless and playing with his teeth or behind his back, he has nothing on JB.  I've got Black Rock and DL others as well as the Vid;s available.

John Henry and others simply put rocked.  It was a real cold night in Orlando last night but the place was sizzling when JB played his heart out and the acoustic set blew my mind, anyone who can play that softly and then turn right around and blast it out the next minute deserves several Grammy's anf many future Gold records, this guy in my humble opinion is the real deal that will put bues rock back on the map and in L.A. will go far places.

Hopefully show the Americans that our home grown talent can be supported here as well and not have to go abroad to get paid, 212 shows and hundreds if not thousands of appreciate old an new fans,

Thankyouverymuch JB, you made our 2010 year!! God Bless you brother Joe, I wish I could jam with you some day, and if you ever need a harp player to sit in next time your in Orl, drop me a line, the pleasure would be all mine.
