Topic: Ian Parker - Hamburg

Ian Parker. What can I say that I didn’t say last year when I caught him at the Downtown Blues Club in Hamburg. The man has ultimate ‘feel’. In his voice, in his playing. The songs are often biographical and therefore the music has this ‘lived’ edge to it.

Last night Ian proved again that superstars don’t always play stadiums. There weren’t too many of us sadly, about 60 or 70, but what we lacked in quantity we made up in spades in enthusiasm.

Ian was playing as a duo with his drummer/producer Wayne Proctor on percussion and rhythm acoustic guitar. Ian told me afterwards that he was actually a bit apprehensive at first having played this venue always with a bigger outfit, but after the first song and reaction any apprehension was dispelled. So it should. The man has a confidence in his songs and his live performances always resonate at a very human level.

There was lots of introductory patter between songs which helped understand where the music has come from. Humour too, as displayed when all their effects pedals died and some frantic on stage unplugging and rejigging ensued . In the best ‘the show must go on tradition’ Ian took the view that, when all else fails ‘play a Hendrix song’, and gave us his classy but understated version of ‘Little Wing’.

Class act. I guess that sums up Ian Parker. Too much of a gentleman to tell 3 utterly stupid women to shut up, that consistently chattered through the later stages of his performance at a point next to the stage. I don’t like to be sexist but just how dumb and ignorant do blondes really have to be? Quite a bit based on last night.

Do take the chance to see him if he ever comes to a club or venue near you. You will not be disappointed.

Re: Ian Parker - Hamburg

Next Thursday that guy will be playing at the Lindenbrauerei in Unna for free on the occasion of the 20th birthday of the Lindenbrauerei. It's a nice venue but traffic during the week is very heavy.
Hope that I won't stuck in a traffic jam at the A40 and miss half of the concert.
Will be my first time that I'll see Ian Parker.

Sounds goodwhat you´re writing, Mike. I have tickets for Sunday in Stuttgart.

Re: Ian Parker - Hamburg

I liked his show last night. As Mike was saying already, it was an acoustic evening featuring Ian´s abilities as a singer-songwriter. I would have liked to hear a bit more of his excellent guitar playing he was showing in some songs. Besides his own songs he played some exquisite covers like Little Wing, Cohen´s Halleluja and Dylan´s Love Sick.
He seems to have some followers in the Stuttgart area: the venue was not really sold out, but rather full - about 150 people. They celebrated him with long applause and refrained from talking.

Travelling to the Lindenbrauerei in Unna was - not the first time - an odyssey.
Our German motorway A40 looked more like a parking lot. Arrived just in time and there were two familiar faces sitting in front of the stage and there was a free chair waiting  smile  Perfect.
A few minutes later Ian Parker and Wayne Proctor (cahon) entered the stage and during the following 2 hours Ian showed his acoustic repertoire. I really liked his guitar playind and the warm timbre of Ian's voice. He told us a bit about the songs and how he got the ideas for the songs.
One of the highlights was Ian's cover of Halleluja. Nobody talking and all eyes and ears were focused on Ian.  lol
Really enjoyed the gig and I would love to see Ian & band in Uden, NL, on 17th December. Depends on the weather.
If not this year, I'll see him again. He's on my radar now.

Re: Ian Parker - Hamburg

Glad you enjoyed the show.

I got to see him again in Celle on Tuesday and he was looking forward to playing in a Brauerei!

Celle was a pub and absolutely over-filled. I was joking with him afterwards that on that basis we could have done the gig in my living room! Still, the venue provided me with the opportunity to speak with him and Wayne for a long time after the show was finished.

Wayne Proctor is Ian's a long time music associate of Ian's working both as a member of his band and producing his live and studio music. He is hoping to work on Ian's new studio album next year. This new project will highlight Ian as we see him on this tour, working predominantly as a singer/songwriter performing his own music. It will be something of a new beginning with more commercial/mainstream leanings.

I don't think he is leaving the blues behind as such, but the focus will definately be more on the song material as opposed to the guitar chops (which he most definately has). So if you do get the chance to see him with the band I would take it as I think that will be the last time with a full band in Europe for a while - but you never know.

I hope that those who have seen him on this tour will continue to support his music. He has an incredible talent, yes as a guitarist but even more so as a songwriter and as an artist who can truly deliver his material.

As Blues Sissi has said 'Halleluja' although a cover was a good case in point. We were in a pub so there was a lot of chat going on, but that was completely in order given the venue. But by the end of that song Ian had completely won the room over. You could have heard a pin drop such is his mastery of vocal delivery and timing.

Keep him on the radar!
