Topic: NCAA Basketball

Well, there is one more fan I know of so I'll start this off.
Preseason tourney action with the 24 hour CBE marathon saw our #25 Aztecs knock off #11 Gonzaga at the Kennel on national TV, arguably the biggest win in school history. This team may be headed for big things under Coach Fisher. A gripping game with the Zags making a comeback run that was stifled in the last minute.

Re: NCAA Basketball

I saw that score Rick, nice win although I didn't know SDS was ranked. it's early, Butler also went down. I will be watching the Aztecs closely to see if it was a fluke, but doesn't sound like it. On sour notes, Auburn lost it's season opener at their brand new AU Arena (not named yet I guess) last Fri. This is a monster of a basketball stadium, more electronics than you can imagine, very embarassing for the inaugural game. They lost to UNC Asheville in OT after leading by 14 at the half. LSU lost last night to Nichols State, their first loss to another instate school since 1988. Ohio State sure took care of business, they look like the real deal. Alabama will be another also ran this year, but at least we have a promising coach in Anthony Grant, his 2nd season.

Yep... looks like another pathetic hoops year in tiger town.  Our AD is from Duke so mayby we'll have a new coach in the not too distant future and some added focus on basketball.

I guess I'll have to pull for Kentucky...again

Re: NCAA Basketball

The SDSU Aztecs made the NCAA playoffs last year by winning the MWC tourney, but lost in the first round to Tennessee. Most of the same team is back with some very good additions which have added bench strength. Look for soph  Kawhi Leonard to shine as the season goes on. He's already being scouted by several NBA teams as a power forward (6'7" 225, a monster on the boards). If they have solved their horrible FT performance of last year, they could go deep this year. As you said Tres, it's early.

I thought you were a good fan #1, but you are hard core! I hope some more fans jump in here too. I can't remember the history but I'm sure you'll dig it up. Aztecs Coach Fisher has a good track record, 3 final 4's with a win at Michigan. This might be his year. Good luck going forward, maybe our teams will have a session again this year.  smile

Re: NCAA Basketball

Aside from my music my other love is college basketball and specifically Indiana University basketball.  I was originally a big UK (Kentucky) fan, but when I enrolled at IU I changed my allegiance.  I'm surprised #1 didn't mention the border rivalry between our schools.  Before Rick Pitino came to Lexington, the Hoosiers had dominated the series, but in the last fifteen years the Wildcats have dominated.
In December 1975 I watched our number one ranked Hoosiers dominate Kentucky at Assembly Hall only to lose to them (without our top player, Scott May) in a regional final by two points.  That was our only loss that season.  The final four that year was in San Diego and I had a press pass and plane ticket lined up had we won that game, but it wasn't to be.  UCLA ended up winning that spring capping John Wooden's storied career.  The next year we opened the season against the Bruins and beat 'em by 20+ points.  A few weeks later at Freedom Hall we got our chance at the Cats for payback.  Kentucky had graduated two of their best players and were re-building that year.  Kentucky was up 4 points with less than a minute in the game, but two sophomores who would later be All-Americans panicked and IU was able to make a miracle shot at the end to tie the game and send it into overtime.  I was taking pictures for the school newspaper and wandered over to the team huddle and pretended to take pictures (I was out of film).  When the horn sounded for  the overtime I got caught on the floor until someone jerked me to the sideline and told me to sit next to one of the folding seats.  The person that did this was our coach, Bobby Knight.  We ended up smoking them in the overtime and when I got up at the game's end and raised my left hand in celebration I nearly punched Knight in the chin.  He looked down at me with a stern look, but then smiled and told me to get the hell off the court.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Just hoping the Hogs are respectable this season. 18 or so wins and a trip to the NIT and I'm happy. Next season is when Pelphrey's recruiting class that is ranked by most as the 3rd best class in the nation comes to Fayetteville. So we'll see. I'm a huge John Pelphrey fan, so I hope he starts to have the success as a head coach that his pedigree says he should have.

Re: NCAA Basketball

great story Scott, don't you just love beating KY any way possible. Hey, he sat you down but he didn't throw a chair at you. lol
I was at UA in '72 when they came in to Tuscaloosa ranked very high. This was the team with Kyle Macy, Jack Givens, Rick Robey, Mike Phillips, and I forget who else. Alabama beat them so bad it was pretty much over at the half. I cannot even tell you who was playing for UA except maybe Wendell Hudson and/or Charles Cleveland. just not sure. All in all, they have owned us just like they do most everyone else. I hope we can put up a better fight this year vs the Cats, UA is somewhat improved over last year.

We won't beat them for awhile.  It'll be a couple years before our talent matches theirs.  I liked their old coach, Tubby Smith, but John Calipari just leaves me cold.  Uk's fabulous season last year was very nearly erased due to academic fraud.  An independent investigation of Eric Bledsoe's grades couldn't find any improprieties because the records at the two schools he attended had mysteriously disappeared.  Had UK been found guilty then that would have made three different schools coached by Calipari with seasons erased.  The recent decision ruling their stud recruit (Kanter) ineligible is (I believe) payback by the NCAA over the Bledsoe affair.
At IU we had a cheater of our own that should've never been hired.  In one year the guy single-handedly flushed a respected program down the toilet.  We're into our third year of recovery and a winning season is our goal.  Our coach in the last month has recruited some great players and more are coming.  We will have a top five class for 2012 that should return us to prominence.
Here's a vid of one of our recruits.  Pretty cool.

Hmmm wonder who that other fan might be hmm  Thanks for starting it off Rick, spare time has been at a minimum this week  yikes I can't swear to it but I think SDSU gave us a stunner a few years back maybe even while Tubby was still here.

I think you are thinking of the University of San Diego  in December 2007, Tubby had left for colder climes...
That team, the 2007-08 University of San Diego Toreros also beat Connecticut in OT in the 2008 NCAA Tournament only to lose to Western Kentucky in the next round. USD is a private college and San Diego State University is indeed a state university.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Oh, me? What else? It's in my blood literally, so it's The Syracuse Orange(men) for me! Biggest crowds in NCAA, (I've never attended though tv-radio coverage for me),  Orange 3-0 and ranked #10 AP #11 USA Coaches.  Sorry Rick SDSU not ranked in their poll & Gonzaga's still ranked high in both polls, right after the "Cuse in both matter of fact.  However, at 3-0 legendary Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has called his team the most overrated he's ever had in 35 years as head coach...That might NOT be bad news though as his habit is always the same. Notoriously, he finds flaws in every WIN!!! His deadpan critical comments are always on some portion of the truth target's bulls-eye (if not dead center), whether liked or not.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Good story Curby. I too admired his results even though he got caught up in his own fierce desire to win sometimes. Rocket, Orangemen are a great team and always a contender in a tough league. Aztecs, my alma and this is the best they've shown in memory so the drum is there to beat. We'll see how they shake out. Pro ball leaves me cold but the college game is the shiznitz.

Deezer - Wasn't Pelphrey one of the "Unnameables"?  I really enjoyed watching those guys cept when they upset my Hoosiers.  Pelphrey was the guy I wanted to succeed Gillespie and Kentucky's loss is Arkansas gain.  You guys got a great young coach and with that good class should compete for an SEC championship soon.
Tres - Both our memories are failing.  Robey and Givens came to UK in 1974, not '72, and along with Phillips and Lee would later win a NC in '78.  I had to edit my post about the two panicked freshmen (Givens and Lee) to sophomores.

I believe they were called The Unforgettables. Yeah he was one of them. He said he really respected Arkansas when they joined the league in 1992 and started whipping everyone's tails in conference play. Those were the glory days with the trio of Todd Day, Lee Mayberry, and Oliver Miller, followed by the next crew led by Corliss Williamson and Scotty Thurman that won the 1994 title. That was back when we were the class of the conference. We need those days back. smile

The Aztecs go to Miami-Ohio for the continuation of the tournament vs. IU/PUI and pull off the biggest comeback in school history. I don't quite know where to put this after they started by tossing bricks for a quarter.  roll hmmmm, there's work to be done. A good team and they were toast.
