Topic: Philip Sayce

Anyone from the UK end of the forum going to see Philip Sayce at The Borderline in London next week?

Re: Philip Sayce

See The London Gig Guide post below. I'll be there with Curryman and Roger62 and probably a few others. Come and say hello. We'll be at the front as usual.  wink

Will this be your first time of seeing Philip?

Re: Philip Sayce

Funnily enough I've just got an e-mail to say that Philip Sayce is playing at Mr Kyps in Poole on 16 November for the princely sum of £8 and the mailer from the Kyps team reads "The next Bonamassa?? You decide, Philip is truly on par with the best guitarists in the world".  I know nothing about him or his music so thought I'd ask the forum ...... over to you guys.

Re: Philip Sayce

Funnily enough....someone heckled Philip last night at the Robin 2 shouting "move over Joe Bonamassa", to which Philip graciously laughed off, and said that Joe was a good friend of his and a "cool cat" who's sitting on top of the world right now.

I would put this guy up there with the best, personally. His energy and enthusiasm is otherworldly, and he has chops in abundance (sorry for the cliche....couldn't think of anything more appropriate that hadn't been said 3 million times already).

Some would say he's too flashy at times, but who cares. A very, very tight power trio, even better than the first time I saw them earlier in the year. He loves what he does, and it shows.

Just my two cents....... cool

Re: Philip Sayce

Hey Paul - didn't spot you there last night - but I was greeted by Triggermala when we arrived, and he had brought along a whole posse from South Wales to see Philip.

I was going to say pretty much the same - that Philip was very gracious towards Joe and reminded the heckler that it's not about who's better than who because "hey - we're all different, and that's good".

"The next Bonamassa?"............... er - no. These two really are so different that it's just not possible to talk in those terms. If it's Blues you want, then Joe's your guy. If it's Hendrix/Kravitz style Rock, with spadefuls of energy, enthusiasm and visual showmanship, and you haven't seen him before, then Philip's gonna blow your socks off, as he did mine first time I saw him.

I had seen Joe play in Amsterdam the previous night, and drove to the Robin2 to see Philip straight from the airport. So I could give my opinion on which gig I enjoyed the most. Let's just say my socks stayed put this time around.

Excellent gig all the same. Just a mention also for Marcus Bonfanti, who opened for Philip last night with a superb short solo set. I believe he will be supporting at some of Philip's remaining gigs - make sure you don't miss him if he is.

Without a doubt Lyn, Philip Sayce is a must see. Comparisons with Joe should be best avoided I guess, remember which forum we are on! smile Yet certain observations can be made. As Icon states Sayce has a more funky style, he's playing is influenced by bluesmen like Freddie King yet also by funkier acts like Funkadelic and of course Hendrix, less so the British Blues apparent in Joe's music. Joe doesn't just play blues of course either. Sayce can be flashy but he's also an exciting change from the SRV soundalikes, he does not rely on standard blues rock petatonic scales, nor covers and has stunningly powerful vocals to match his energetic guitar playing. He can though play a sweet slow blues too such as his tribute to ex band leader Jeff Healey. His album Innerevolution sees him reign in some of the guitar playing for a strong set of songs and I'd certainly suggest if possible you pick it up before going to see him to have an expectation of what you will see. Here's track 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bwbHG1WoPM

There's certainly a place for Sayce beside Joe, they play at a similar level of intensity and I can see Sayce being as popular in years to come. He's got the drive and the enthusiasm, just needs more backing from the likes of Planet Rock to become better known

Hell, £8 would be worth it just for Marcus Bonfanti's solo set - he's supporting Sayce on the whole tour!  smile

Out of interest, I did an interview with Philip Sayce for Blues Matters, to be published early in the new year and he spoke extensively and excitedly both about the music he loves and the music he creates, plus some of those scars from his childhood which feature in some of his lyrics and have shaped the man he is now.

I'll see him in Edinburgh on Friday, he's in Glasgow the previous night and Newcastle on Saturday before a well deserved night off! smile

Lyn, yes, you must go. As I said at the end of my Blues Matters review after seeing Philip for the first time in October 2009: “There’s no doubting, however, that Sayce is a very talented guitarist, singer and entertainer with the “wow factor” by the bucketful.”

If you can take your eyes off Philip for a moment (he’s a handsome chap) look across the stage at Joel Gottschalk on bass, who’s pretty energetic too.

Let us know what you think on Wednesday.
