Yeah - I was gonna mention you could fight over who does what covers, but thought better of it........
Yet surely there's more to new generation blues than rehashing old SRV songs and guitar licks - that sounds more like last generation to me.
Exactly!! Eldo and I were being tongue in cheek......

Chantel is the same age as Joanne, Joanne has 2 excellent label releases, 2nd album all original, first I think just one cover toured the world, lived with Dave Stewart for some time. Front page on Blues Revue!!! Moved to the USA due to demand. Her first album is Ruffs best selling debut, be interesting to see how the 2nd one does. There is some chap on here who says demand has taken all printed stock before release. Sorry but Chantel or Virgil don't come close to Joanne. Only time will tell.
As for Virgil I think he has only being going a year, just compare Chantel's and Virgil's versions of Had To Cry Today and Voodoo Chile, no comparison. So much more feeling, passion and ability in Virgil's playing. It's horses for courses.
Just looked at Chantels Acoustic 'Original' its a blatant rip off of Joes High Water Everywhere, I just wonder if she is up for writing own material.
I think Chantle plays on the cutesy little blonde thing, I dont think there is an longevity there, unless very strong material comes along. Unfortuantely woman have to work twioce as hard as the men
Just being listening to Virgil's live show that Amsterdammer posted on here. Mostly covers but **## can that band play. He is pulling stuff out that is truly off the wall. The opening track (originally) Would be a killer track with good production. Check out Out Of My Mind it is genius (although he milks the solo somewhat, must be 20 minutes long!!).
Chantel is further down the road than Virgil who also appears to have only a couple of originals too, and a narrower repertoire. She's played far more gigs than him and on far larger stages. She's also further ahead than Joanne was at her age. Give the lass a break and you'll be rewarded in time.

Gigmeister, I think that Chantel deserves a little bit more respect than this. You compare Chantel's career with JST's on the basis of age and musical achievements. Chantel is a little younger than JST, and this is her first year as a full time professional musician. The reason for this is that Chantel has done a music degree where she broke all sorts of records. As Chantel gigs relentlessly around the UK, she is still working on her first album. If you're in any doubt about how good Chantel has been in the last 12 months, just look at any of the old issues of Blues Matters.
To try and say that Chantel plays on the "cutesy little blond thing" is, frankly, ridiculous. Chantel is a serious musician, and a seriously good one. Chantel will also play a two hour set, sometimes even longer.
It will be interesting to see the reaction when Chantel takes her band to America. I have a feeling it could be something very special.
Chantel played the 100 Club in May, and they re-booked her for December when she was only halfway through her set. Chantel also played the Cambridge Rock Festival, a four day festival, in August. Despite her midday slot on Saturday, and playing a shortened set, she drew probably the biggest crowd of the whole festival when she started to play. When the organiser made his closing speech on Sunday night, he announced to the audience that he had re-booked Chantel for next year. He mentioned no other bands. How could a musician with no commercial product to her name, a totally new name to the majority of the fans at the festival, have achieved such acclaim and recognition? This was not a blues festival. This is what can happen when Chantel is unleashed at a packed crowd of unsuspecting music fans at a music festival.
I have been to see JST live, and will be seeing her again in about two weeks time. I've also seen Virgil a couple of times. And I've seen Chantel numerous times. All three are great guitarists, and I enjoy listening to them all. Chantel happens to be my personal favourite, and she has a killer vocal as well, but it is not a competition about who is best. Give all of them the respect they deserve.

Got to agree with you steve all these artists deserve respect, gigmeisters comments don't sit well with me and the fact he only has three posts and they are all about chantel suggests to me he has an agenda here.
Thanks Steve for such a well reasoned reply to gigmeister's latest dig at Chantel
I have seen both Joanne and Virgil a number of times now and posted here each time about how good I thought they were and how they were clearly improving each time I have seen them Now, I'm not a musician and I don't pretend to be. When I say I like a band its because they make me feel something through their music. To compare one to another is pointless. Some musicians who are well liked on this forum leave me cold. Others who I rave about don't convince my forum buddies. That's expected.
I saw Chantel for the first time last Sunday at a memorial show. In my view she's a fine young musician who will continue to develop her own individual style in her own time. So what if that timescale doesn't compare to Joanne's? She had a difficult acoustic slot when everyone was in the party mood and she carried it off admirably by projecting her own personality through her music. Don't be fooled by the crowd noise in the background of the audio I posted – those people were even talking during the eulogy - the majority of us were enjoying her music.
gigmeister, you've made three posts on this forum, and all about Chantel, I'm guessing your a failed musician who never experienced anything like the praise or respect that Chantel has received. Why you'd want to revive an old argument I don;t know, but it's clear your motive is not good.
I saw Chantel two weeks ago at the tailend of her Scottish tour and she was superb. I'm not a guitarist (but I was with people who are), her playing was great, her singing really good too, and she and the band impressed everyone present. She's got a likeable nature and likes to talk on the stage, nothing wrong with that, better than the guitarists you see who never utter a word. To make a success you need to be liked for your music and as a person. Chantel has achieved that in the last two years. Chantel has some good original material and I'm sure we'll hear more of it in the months to come. Some of us may be impatient to hear news of an album, but that's only because we want to take some of that magic from one of her shows home. Its interesting that if you type Chantel McGregor into google, the second top search is Chantel McGregor CD, so it just indicates there is huge demand for her. Comparisons are inevitable, but futile, musicians' path's are different, but that in my view is what makes them distinct.
to all musicians who have the balls to go out and play night after night you have my admiration.
