Topic: Zagreb welcomed JB on 10/29/2010

Dear community!
I've found that it would be nice to share what happened today.
As it's difference in 5-7 hours, all of these, hasn't been yet.
I'm before the time sometimes, not very often.

Zagreb
Croatia
29 10 2010

Venue: Boogaloo Club, 19.30 h
Lasted for 2h, 20 min.
Audience cca 700 people

Setlist (oh, it's ougta be somebody younger and more objective for memorizing the whole stuff, if you're dazzled it's so hard)

Opener: - Cradle Rock (Sunburnst LP)
- So Many Roads
- Slow Train (Switches to Gold LP)

(Enters Sandi Thom, sunburst LP)
- If Heartaches where Nickels (w. Sandi Thom)
- So, It's Like That (w. Sandi Thom)
(Exits Sandi Thom)

- Sloe Gin
- Young Man Blues (Gibson Explorer)
- The Ballad of John Henry (Swaps to black LP,
Theremin used in solo more than before)

(Enters Paul Rafferty, Joe now takes Sunburst LP)
/I don't know the tune; some lyr: I'll get you on the floor when shadows go dark/
Blues Deluxe
Mr. Big
(Exits Paul Rafferty)

Intro solo / Woke Up Dreaming / Outro Solo
(Acoustic Capo Ist fret)

Mountain Time (Some red electric, sorry can't tell)
Jango (Sunburst LP again)

Bird on a Wire (w. Sandi Thom)
Just Got Paid
(ZZ Top cover) (Gibson Flying w. some Theremin)

Comt.:
Best I've seen this year, far more than expected, much more then I've paid for.

Except for their love for music, there was great deal of magic all around.

Joe is far more convincing alive, work and techniques incl. sound engeneering impecable. Fantastic synergy at the moments, like it's all one entity within the room. Do you still
need any more details?

Whole of the band was really good. That was the best acoustic set I've heard on the concert.
BTW. Anybody knows the specific model?

I was hoping for 'The Great Flood' (for Sandi does it soo goood), and maybe 'A New Day Yesterday', but that would be inapropriate and ungrateful.

Sandi is good as can be (I cannot shed tears when Joe sings, but her...), she seems kind and very pretty. Joe, don't let her easily, looks like keeper, at least sings like bunch of keepers.

I wish them both all the best there is, for they've found rare job in this difficult and troubled times that cheers up so many people. You can't possibly be aware how good you are.

Hope to see you again someday. Maybe as BCC (with Sandi?)

Joe, great thanks, many would take swell memories.
Think you'll have some eager followers overhere.

Regards till the highest note

                 Janchy

P.S. I won't be ashamed if anyone finds the urge to correct the setlist.

Welcome to the Forum Janchy! What a great first post. I wish I could help with the setlist, Hey Roadshow! a hand over here!
With Joe's illness lately, the traditional setlist has changed up a lot to accommodate the supporting vocal artists. You are so right about Sandi Thom. She has a wonderful voice and is so easy to look at. Great to hear that the band is still in top form, even with the less than full strength Joe at the helm. Keep the posts coming, you are among friends here.

Re: Zagreb welcomed JB on 10/29/2010

Thank you for kind words, Rick B.

I've been dry an official in first part, put tried some 'humanizer filter' for part that could be found as review. Awkward as it may be - it' 2 a.m. and i'm off to snatch some complete unawarenes. Would introduce properly on occasion.

I've been thoough Google, Wiki, but haven't found singer Paul Rafferty (if it' Gerry...)

Heard also (after the concret, while heading home) a comment of a songstress...

(sadly she was only singing without that acoustic cutaway with very nice rosette
/It was a long time I played a lute for a week, for fun, tuned it like guitar?!/
So I found intriguing in rosettes especially on nowadays accoustics)

...in a malicious and dissapointing manner most likely from a man who never ever heard the woman to sing some blues stuff... comparing her to Alison Krauss.

Well, may be some qualities they have in common, sorry, Krauss is an american, country singer, but I've heard so many female voices, and I'm glad he loves country, an I'm more
glad Sandi has converted /as a brittish or preciselly scottish/ from pop singer from the charts to the one who can even show or light up the ways for the greats as is JB himself.

Plant/Krauss album has left me cold, as nothing happened. Haven't heard Sandi's 'Merchant and Thiefes' album entirely yet, but she has much more potential as singer / songwriter then it looks now.
Hope she won't get tired of blues ever.

Good night or good evening and have some fun tonight.

Thanks Warren. I notice a new song. Blues in C! Could this be a song from the latest Black Rock sojourn? Did any attendee at Zagreb happen to get a video of this song, and if so PLEASE post a link.

Re: Zagreb welcomed JB on 10/29/2010

Hi!

I've found a dozen videos on YT of a Zagreb Concert.
Just search 'Joe Bonamassa Zagreb'.

Thanks all for the great effort.

Some are very good.

But, really, that's only the record of an event, it doesn't do a full justice to the atmosphere, 'somethings in the air' and great sound that one experiences in flesh.
But you already knew it.

Blues in C is not uploaded yet as I see.

Is there a possibility that 'The Slow Train' and 'Blues in C' are the songs from the forthcoming album? Corect me IIW, please.

And, sorry, I do insist that JB played 'Jango' before or after 'Mountain Time'.

Regards

Slow Train is off the new album. Blues in C is a never before played tune, a treat for you in Zagreb smile . What was your impression? I wasn't too impressed by the male vocalist but since Joe was ill, he had to use what he could find I guess. He frequently plays Django as an intro to Mountain Time so that is what you heard.

Re: Zagreb welcomed JB on 10/29/2010

Hello Rick!
The only 'Blues in C' I knew before was the 'Slow Blues In C' by TYA. But that was much faster. So it was ringing, until it stopped.

Blues in C has a real bluesy touch, like say: Lonesome Road Blues or Blues Deluxe which I've
mistaken for, but the development of the song, and am not sure how to use the word 'poetry' are not exactly my cup of anything. Maybe if Joe sang it would gave some sence and rhythm.

Oh, I'm grateful that Paul Rafferty has covered Joe's crunched guitars. He showed the voice that can tear the walls, and traced no nuance, for that I found the show was only bigger, and when Joe singed, it was more bluesy, more subtle. But Joe was so willing, nobody mentioned his sinus problems but him.

So I was overhelmed to hear (this was really big suprise, never thouhgt) Sandi and Paul, because it only made the whole impression wider and if you want more glamorous.

I must say I was affraid of Joe's 'mob' or 'politician look', but when he appeared in white suit with green shirt, and begun the Rory's song, I was at home. I think Rory wants and needs to be played, I admire to whole of his life very much. Taste were very popular overhere, I loved them. And Joe's rendition is quite remarkable and rich.

So, is there any other thing known about the next CD. And -  for you are probably the very best person to ask: is there any album released as vinyl long play (or the set of two at least)? (I'm sorry, that's not me who would be buying it.)
Thanx

Thanks Janchy for the explanation. There is a new album recorded at Black Rock being mastered right now and due for release in March. Vinyl LPs are available via Joe's online store for some of his releases.

Re: Zagreb welcomed JB on 10/29/2010

Hi!

The concert found a plethora of echoes. Even in daily news. All the critics are highly positive. If you don't speak croatian, you'll find a few fine pictures and well known titles of albums, events and names of
musicians.

Later on  I would try to give an overview with quotations worth mentioning. But, you know,
translation is kinda responsability to the authors and words that've been said. Not sure to do it.

So only a few links (while that's still on www):

Very nice compilation of excellent reviews Janchy. Google translate does a good job to English on these with only a few mistakes from colloquial usage. I can tell you are a truely addicted Bonaholic. smile  cool Reviewers were suitably blown away by the concert.

Re: Zagreb welcomed JB on 10/29/2010

Janchy, thanks a lot!

As a German I've been to Croatia often  - of course mainly on holiday along the coast but also to Zagreb on business. I live now (part of the year) near Lake Balaton and we have traveled to Varazdin regularly - it's not too far away ...

It's fantastic how music today travels around the world (yes I know classical music does it too) - but if someone would have told me 25 years ago that an American blues musician would come to Croatia ...

What a wonderful world - and wonderful music too!

I just hope that Joe will go on touring so more people can hear him playing live - and you and me also, of course!

Wolfi, you're welcome!

I dunno much of american blues concerts, but I listed some of my favourite rock concrets in 70's when I tryed to introduce to the JB forum. And here's the link to only list of concerts in Zagreb that I found by now.
(See if translator helps. )

http://www.nacional.hr/clanak/56464/kon … k-centrala

And I can go on for a week with a great names that are omitted (hope not forgotten,)
like Blood Sweat & Tears, Status Quo in 1968, or less known like Message (DE), Tiger B. Smith, Omega (HU) in 1974-75. Not mentioning Bob Dylan twice in Croatia, Rolling Stones twice in Zagreb...and God knows who, for there is no public register of guesting musicians.

I must restrain now.

So, that's about rock.
And believe me, there must have been some American bluesers in
those 'Once upon the times...'! I'll do some homework and ask around.
(There were Joe Filisko and Eric Noden playing in B.P. Club in Zagreb yesterday, but I cannot
follow that much, and I've been told too late, on a JB concert.)

And I'm still grateful to Joe and his crew for splendid evening in hope that he will be
coming back.

Re: Zagreb welcomed JB on 10/29/2010

Alvin Lee of Ten Years After has a song "Slow Blues in C" on his Pure Blues album.  It's a great song and I wonder if Joe is covering it.  I know Joe is into Alvin Lee...he covered "One of these Days"!  Can't wait to see the new show.
