Topic: Sandi Thom at Mr Kyps, Poole last nite with special guest ....

….. knew that would get you going!  Unfortunately Joe didn’t appear on stage with Sandi but he was in the audience supporting her and we met him briefly afterwards.

It was a good size audience for a mid week gig and Sandi was very well received by an enthusiastic crowd.  The set started with Belly of the Blues from her latest CD, Merchants & Thieves, and then proceeded through more from this CD plus some of her back catalogue, including the song which propelled her to internet fame, “I wish I was a Punk Rocker …”.  She also did a terrific version of “If Heartaches were Nickels” and as part of the encore she performed a simply beautiful rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Need your love so bad“ with just her guitarist.  Sandi’s voice ranges from the soft and high to gutsy ballsy blues and last night she showed just how versatile a singer she is.  And she plays a mean guitar and harmonica too.  Not only is she a beautiful, petite and very talented lady but she also has Joe as her boyfriend.  It don't get much better than that.  But apparently her driving isn't so hot    wink

Joe looked relaxed and happy to be playing a supporting role last night.  He said he's been working hard with BCC for the past week and was shortly off to Spain in preparation for his shows there.  But he was his usual generous self, answering questions, having photos taken and signing bits and pieces of memorabilia which included a hand-written set list from his first UK show at Mr Kyps in 2005 and which Dave Pate jokingly tried to set fire to.

We met up with Rus from the forum and I know he spent a good bit of time chatting with Joe last night so looking forward to his report.

A great ending to a great week!

Re: Sandi Thom at Mr Kyps, Poole last nite with special guest ....

You see...this is how I imagined my show report from tomorrow night in Sheffield to sound.
Nevermind, we're there to see Sandi. Joe's presence is a nice bonus, if he tags along, but it's not the reason we got the tickets.

I'm kind of glad he didn't get on stage with her. For one thing, it's her show, her band and she certainly doesn't need any extra help. Plus, I bet he's glad of the chance to relax a little.

Nice report, BTW.  Looking forward to tomorrow night...

I was so impressed by Sandi when she supported Joe during his last tour and was looking forward to seeing her extend her repertoire and as a headliner.  Joe was a bonus, but not the reason I went either.  However, I had a feeling he would be there (but not performing) and I knew he was around because when we walked in the DJ was playing "Highwater Everywhere".

Yes Lyn it's nice to see Joe supporting Sandi this way. They are a lovely couple. Seeing Sandy in Liverpool on Tuesday, but not expecting Joe to be there. Would be great to see him again, but hey, it's Sandy I want to see that night!

Very nice review Lyn, but I'm not surprised as you are so well read!  wink

I'm pretty sure Sandy said on Monday that Joe would only be at Mr Kyps so you were very lucky. To speak to Joe twice in one week is very special.  smile

I'm hoping to see Sandy in London next week.

Saw Sandi at the "12 Bar" in Swindon last Friday. Excellent performance in a small venue with a reduced band of  just a guy on a beat box,  a guitarist and Sandi. She was truly excellent and in great voice and like Joe is one of those rare performers that is even better live than on record.

I'm happy Joe has a Sweetie in the Biz. She understands a life lived on the road. It's a shame he didn't sing.  I got to hear them together, (Thanks Rick B.), and they really compliment each others voice.  It was "Bird on a Wire".  It was beautiful!!!     Cathy

I still get a thrill just thinking about those shows Cathy. Same duet, back to back nights was ......words fail! She looked at him, he looked at her and a smoldering meltdown occured.

Re: Sandi Thom at Mr Kyps, Poole last nite with special guest ....

Totally agree with you all about Joe's kind support  smile He seems truly proud of Sandi and her recent work, and he and Dave seemed to enjoy the show a fair bit! I wish Joe and Sandi the best in their relationship - afterall, they're such a well suited couple  big_smile  Hope they have all the happiness they deserve!
Yes, as Lyn says, it really was a great end to the week! And once again, thanks Lyn for the lift home!  big_smile  big_smile  big_smile
It certainly was an eventful night, as the band and I were due to have an interview on the radio in our next town away which was quite a laugh, but before we were going on air, me and Andy had the dilema of finding a way to Kyps, seeing as we reeeeally wanted to go (and I had a slight idea that Joe was going to be there  lol ) So straight after we were done, we booked a taxi and got to Poole just in time for the start of Sandi's set (fortunately at 10:28! as the sign said: 'NO ENTRY's AFTER 10:30  yikes   lol )
So when we're at the bar, who're the first people we see? Joe and Dave  wink As much as I wanted to say hi, I thought of it as slightly rude to chat during the set... In fact I don't like talking in ANY musicians sets - just enjoy the music! Which on this night, was superb: Sandi and co are a fantastic act... So while we watched the set,,, why not stand next to Joe?  lol It may sound weird... But standing next to your hero casually for an hour or so, is a little enchanting! I swear Joe has some magical aura bouncing out of him  lol
Once the show was over, and after a magnificent encore! I saw Joe walking from the Gents, so walked  over to say hi, followed by a bit of a laugh after Joe frantically wiped his hands on his trousers before I shook his hand  lol (yeahhh, I speak for all Kyps gig-goers when I say that hand-drier isnt totally adequate LOL)
Now, although this was my third time meeting Joe, I realised I hadn't actually ever told him how much of an impact he's had on my life, so I said who I was... The kid he called up to play his guitar at Southampton... The kid sat in front of him at the Guitarist interview at John Henry's... The kid stood right in front at the Gibson Rooms Gig, thanks to PeteTheCabby, for giving the luckiest kid alive a ticket to what can only be described as a phenomencal show, and more! I gathered Joe may have remembered me after all of that, and even asked me: 'Oh how've you been man?' and even commented on the popularity of that vid on youtube on that fateful day in Southampton  smile The fact he even remotely recognised that, meant so much to me, and I took the chance to say that I took everything he'd said to me very seriously, and how that day changed the way I play guitar forever,, for the better! I said he was my all-time hero and that I'm so grateful for the influence he's had on me... Which he followed with a modest smile I guess! He must hear that sort've thing all the time  lol we chatted a little more, about his upcoming UK tour, and even remembered Sandi telling him about my band on that day in February! (Colt 45 are now signed to the same people that put out Sandi's first record... Small world huh!) So it was a totall honour to have that conversation with Joe, which ended with a pretty nice pic smile and him signing my Class 5 receipt  lol  seeing as he's the reason I bought one in the first place smile I chatted with Dave for a bit, who is a really nice guy big_smile - about BCC's work, and their tour... And how nice Santorini was!

All in all, a VERY cool night  smile Thanks again Lyn! I'll see you on Saturday smile

And Rus-thanks for the very nice post, I really enjoyed reading it and I can feel your enthusiasm and good vibes all the way across the pond!!  LOVE in a different form!  Good luck in all your musical endeavors, Joe is very good role model.  smile

Re: Sandi Thom at Mr Kyps, Poole last nite with special guest ....

I was at The Jazz Cafe, Camden, London with fellow forumites Currymandave, Maggie & Lydia , plus it seems our new gig buddy Andy , who collectively we are converting to the majesty of Joe & Co.
This was a gig of not just Sandi Thom and support Marcus Bonfanti, it was a chance for Sandi to appreciate her music friends who also joined her on stage. The first was a 12 year old blues guitar hero in the making called Aaron Keylock who played a great version of BB Kings '3 in the morning'. Apparently Sandi discovered him at Charlotte Street Blues, which just goes to show that not only are the artists getting younger and very talented, venues as well are nurturing this talent , which can only be a great bonus to everyone.
The very tall Tommy Hare was another guest who jammed with the band with a great version of The Band's 'The Weight'.  In between the two guests , Marcus Bonfanti joined Sandi and the band for what I must say was an absolutely blistering version of 'This Old World', if you thought the Hammersmith version was good , then this version was off the scale, brilliant stuff from all concerned.
Before the main set from Sandi, Marcus Bonfanti treated us to a super set full of class, wit, emotion and superb musicianship which I regularly admire. Playing tracks mainly from his latest cd, he also played 'Now You're Gone' from his first release 'Hard Times', and also a cover of the Blind Boys Of Alabama song 'Run Long'.
Sandi played a terrific set of songs old & new in her catalogue of releases, even though this was the last date of the official tour , the band I have noticed are so much tighter now and I haven't seen them play so well.
Lots of smiles and laughter from everyone at the gig to watch and listen as well as those who were playing for us.
Highlights (difficult to choose) from the set was Maggie McCall, Show No Concern, Punkrocker, Gold Dust and Runaway Train. This by no means deminishes the rest of the songs, they are just my personal highlights.

Sandi has a few more dates towards the end of the year and Marcus is on tour with his band through October and November plus a scintilating support slot with Philip Sayce

See you on the road  big_smile

Re: Sandi Thom at Mr Kyps, Poole last nite with special guest ....

Thanks Roger for a great review of last night - a brilliant evening for one who goes to watch and listen!  Thank you also to Lyn and Rus for sharing their very special experiences of the gig in Poole.  Sandi and her band along with Marcus, Aaron and Tommy gave us such stunning performances and Sandi is so friendly, happy to sign and chat.
As always it was great to share the evening with David, Lydia and Roger and it was good to see Andy again  smile Great company in the queue on a rainy Saturday evening  big_smile

Re: Sandi Thom at Mr Kyps, Poole last nite with special guest ....

thanks for the review Roger - good one. You're right, This 'Ol World was, well,  out of this world. Marcus Bonfanti was ripping up a storm doing the "Joe" part and Sandi was rockin her socks off. It was such a fun evening and after the summer break it was especially nice to meet up the Bonabuddies again.

Sandi must have gone away from her last gig of the current tour feeling proud. She kept the mood upbeat all evening so there was no Ghost Town this time but beautiful harmonies from Sandi and Lindsey on The Weight more than made up for that.

I was thinking Jake Rigden was a young prodigy at 15 but 12 year old Aaron Keylock surprised me even more. Keep a look out for him. There's photos of Sandi and band, Marcus, Aaron and, of course, Maggie, Lydia and Roger here...

...some inconsiderate being decided to shut the Hammersmith Flyover ( bad bad move any day of the week ) on Saturday afternoon and deprived me of a good night out sounds like!...shame!  sad
