Topic: Does Joe use a TREMOLO unit on any of his songs?

Good Day,

I was listening to Sloe Gin, as I have a Gazillion times, and do my ears deceive me, or

am I detecting tremolo effect on the leeds?  If you listen to the

ending notes on some of his runs, they all seem to have a tremolo effect.

The only other thing I can think it might be is, maybe my CD player is generating some

wow and flutter, but I don't really notice that effect during the body of the song.

Can someone enlighten me please?

If so, what brand / model?

Re: Does Joe use a TREMOLO unit on any of his songs?

You have very good ears.  I too detect a very subtle tremolo on many of Joe's songs.  He has used the Guyatone Flip Tube Tremolo in the past but these days he's using the Fulltone Supratrem.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Thank you Stratpaulguy86

What about the VooDoo Labs Tremolo?

Has anybody tried it?

Any other suggestions on decent Tremolo pedals for around $100?

Thanks

Rob

I have wondered if he keeps it on at all times as a subtle effect. On some of the videos where he demonstrates his rig, you can hear the effect in the amp hiss when he is not talking/playing. The little instruction sheet that Fulltone sends with the Supa-Trem says that some people use the effect "always on" as a tone enhancing kind of thing.
You can easily hear it on one of the guitars on "Bird On A Wire"

I'd love to hear something straight from the Man himself on this.

I think it must be, any time i've watched the albert hall discs, listening to live youtube and seen him in concert, i've noticed that subtle yet noticeable trem sound. stuff like last kiss, you can hear it quite well.

wonder if it's going into the marshall, as it's on all the time. it's a great sound non the less.

Re: Does Joe use a TREMOLO unit on any of his songs?

I hear it most of the time as well which leads me to believe its running all the time on one of his amps.  I would like to see a schematic of his rig. ..Or better yet, play through it. -S

Re: Does Joe use a TREMOLO unit on any of his songs?

It could be a trem, but also it can be the mix of delay with the modulation (chorusing) he uses.  That is a trick I first learned from Steve Morse and Joe has recently mentioned that he is a fan of Steve's...  It gives the delay a bounce that is subtle yet, lush.

Re: Does Joe use a TREMOLO unit on any of his songs?

When I saw him live last November, he seemed to have a tremolo on for half the show.  Full songs, too: rhythm parts, solos, verses, everything.   It was  a little too much, imho.  Don't get me wrong, still awesome tone and of course playing, but it wasn't subtle at all.  To me tremolo is one of those effects that's wonderful in specific situations, but detracts if it's used too much.  Can't say I noticed it on the album version Slo Gin - next time I listen to that song I'll keep my ears perked up.

It could be a trem, but also it can be the mix of delay with the modulation (chorusing) he uses.

Interesting, maybe that was it.

This guy seems to think that there is a trem on sloe gin.

Yeah, good point.  On one of the newer youtube vids where he is going through his rig with joe coffey, he displays an amp and says it has a lot of CHORUS on it but it sounds like trem.

I saw Steve Morse playing with Deep Purple back in the early-mid 90's at the York, PA fair grounds.  $5 a ticket, insanely loud, and I didn't have a clue who he was, just that he was the best guitar player I had ever seen.  He was there to play, and he played his a$$ off.  So good. -Seth

Yeah, Morse is one of my favorites.  Sick player.  He goes into detail about his rig in the "The Definitive Steve Morse" instructional video. This is of course either very early or pre_purple days.  You can see his Silver Jubilee in the back... Maybe Morse and JB have a bit more in common than just amps  smile

Re: Does Joe use a TREMOLO unit on any of his songs?

I brought this up in another thread...  I read in one of last months guitar mags (I'm sorry- I don't remember if it was Premiere Guitar, Guitar World, or Guitar Player), that the Supatrem is ALWAYS ON.  Of all the years of following Joe & his gear, that was the first time I had read that.  I commented in the other thread, hoping Joe might chime in, but he must be too busy these days.  sad

I'll have to go back & listen to RAH again & see what I can hear.

Here's the previous thread:
