Re: Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience

It would be cool but given the tour schedules known so far, it would involve a lot of trans Atlantic flights. Maybe a cameo here and there. There is a lot of available talent that can do an adequate Zep cover.

I don't think Pagey is too busy these days.  Wouldn't that be a kicker!!

Re: Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience

As for the speculation on who else might be involved in this project, I've been doing some thinking and googling and have come up with the following:

1.  Of course Joe Bonamassa is not involved... most of us already knew this, but if anyone still needs confirmation, just look at the two tour schedules!  roll

2.  None of the original members of Led Zeppelin are involved, although Plant has given his blessing, and there is an open invitation for them all to play.  Jason hadn't even heard from Page and Jones as of a couple weeks ago, so I think it's safe to say this tour isn't based on them.  roll

3.  When I read that Jason didn't want to announce the other band members' names because he didn't want them to be pre-judged, and given that he's teamed with Annerin Productions, I began to suspect that all or some of them were recruited from a Zep tribute band.  Some searching revealed that Annerin does have a working relationship with a Zep tribute out of southern CA who've been playing together since 1989 called "Led Zepplica - The Led Zeppelin Experience"... supposedly Annerin spent 2 1/2 years searching for the best Zep tribute out there, and they've brought them to Canada for some tours over the past several years.  On top of that, I see that Led Zepplica periodically (including this Sat) uses guest vocalist Chas West, formerly of the Jason Bonham Band, when their own vocalist is busy elsewhere... so there is a band connection there too.  A couple of Led Zepplica's Nov tour dates do kinda conflict with Jason's tour dates, but they could always continue with the guest vocalist, if all they're contributing to Jason is their singer, Joe Retta.  Retta is also currently busy with Sweet, but that tour schedule doesn't go past Sept.  wink

4.  As for the guitarist and bassist... well we've been told the band will be "hand picked session players" and that some are known people.  Doesn't really tell us who they ARE so much as who they're NOT (don't think Plant, Page, Jones or any other musicians already famously connected to a band can be considered session players).  So really that's our answer, even if we don't have names yet... guess we could speculate, but where would we start?  roll

5.  So, whadaya think, some combination of #3 & #4 maybe?  wink

Good job Vik. I think he will bring a good show and am really looking forward to it! It is going to be about the music and era, not the individual artists performing now.

Re: Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience

I've had time to think about this some more, and something rather obvious occurred to me... if Jason's former band member Chas West is good enough at singing Zep vocals to fill in for Led Zepplica's Joe Retta when he's busy, well then maybe Chas West himself is our guy.  It's just that I tend to think Annerin had something particular in mind when they approached Jason about the project, and they do already have this relationship with a Zep tribute, one that they spent 2 1/2 years searching for and have produced several Canadian tours for.  The more I think about my theory, the more I think I might be right.  But I did not research anybody's Facebook or Twitter posts or anything like that for clues that may further support or disprove anything (I figure somebody out there nuttier than me will do that, haha).  I haven't even sampled Led Zeppelica and Joe Retta's vocals.

Another note:  Jason might've even been scouting for talent in Zep tributes even before Annerin approached him, as I know that in March of 2009 he attended a Led Zepagain show in Los Angeles (and even sat in on one song).  Incidentally, Jimmy Page had also attended one of their shows in 2004, so maybe that's how Jason heard of them.  Apparently Jason is still in contact with the band, but they say they have not been approached about his project.  I'm pretty sure they're also one of the bands Annerin passed over in their search for a Zep tribute years ago.

As for Jimmy Page, I have also heard he has something in the works, and that, combined with the fact that he's probably the Zep member who's closest to Jason, makes people want to believe he's involved with this, but he can't be, unless Jason's statement that he hasn't heard from Page was a cover story.  But I'm quite sure none of the original Zep members are going to team up with Annerin to play in a tribute to themselves.  In fact, I'm sure there are NO big names associated with this project, otherwise Jason would be using those names to his advantage, and they'd be booking larger venues.  Not to say that it won't be a good show... Annerin has fairly high standards... I've always heard good things about Rain, if that's any indication of what to expect.  Though I've seen the Pink Floyd Experience and I had a few problems with them (I've seen worse though).

I just gotta say, that time that I had the BCC line-up right, that information came from somebody who knew somebody who had a leak from an inside source... so that was handed to me and I just reported it.  This time, my theory is based on nothing but my own research.  Not even sure why I took the time to do it, as I don't have much of a personal interest in the project, aside from the fact that I'm a huge Zep fan.  I guess I just got curious about a few things (like if Annerin already had any dealings with Zep tributes) and what I turned up was enough to make me keep digging further, and I can get obsessive about these things, lol.  roll

Maybe I should add, I once thought I had the surprise headliner of the Olympic Closing Ceremonies figured out, and I was completely wrong.  A historically reliable source with inside connections had inadvertently given us a misleading clue (if you saw "set the controls for the heart of the closing ceremonies", what would you think? roll  tongue ) and I got excited and did a bunch of online research and thought I had a lot of good evidence to support a Pink Floyd reunion.  Needless to say I was wrong... it was Jimmy Page. tongue

Re: Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience

You are most probably right about any Zep members  not participating and I was just kidding on my remark about Pagey not being busy these days.  But if you are right on some of your investigation, it could validate your obsession over it   wink and if you are wrong, Oh well, no harm done, just an investigation that didn't pan out too well

BTW, I love Zeppelin too as my favorite band of my youth.  Joe has become my present day favorite.

It's Me:   I'm geographically challenged, particularly when it comes to CA, but if you haven't yet seen "LedZepAgain", who I believe are from SoCal, I would recommend giving them a try.  I met the guitar player when my GF and I flew to San Diego for a vacation and to meet up with a select group of Pat Travers fans, and although I haven't actually seen the band, I've seen some pretty impressive YouTube footage, and the same guitarist was involved in a Queen tribute (called Sheer Heart Attack) which was filmed for an HBO (?) special on tribute bands.   Steve Z. is a really nice guy also.

Enjoy the "Led Zeppelin Experience" and let us know how it went.  I'd probably go if they were in DC or Baltimore but can't justify Philly ATM.

Re: Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience

Led Zepagain's Steve Zukowsky also does double-duty as guitarist for the L.A. Floyd tribute "Which One's Pink?"  I hate to comment on either band too much, because I'm acquainted with the guy who manages both bands, as well as some of the players, through a Floyd site I used to frequent, and I like to stay diplomatic.  So let's just say I've never seen either band live and I probably haven't sampled enough to have a valid opinion, and leave it at that.  I do seem to hear good things from other people though, and I usually do suggest to those in the area that they check them out (since The Machine ain't an option out there, haha wink ).

I just happened to get an email from someone yesterday about Led Zepagain that may be of interest... I'll copy & paste some excerpts here:

".... In fact today on MSNBC or CNBC Led Zepagain was on the news all morning doing songs and interviewed talking about how popular tribute bands are getting these days. They gave some serious numbers of sales of CD's and mostly downloads of some bands and its way more than I would have ever thought. .... Personally I don't think they're that good from what I saw this morning on TV. They seem to go for the look more than the sound which rubs me the wrong way. The bass/keyboard player has the page boy haircut that John Paul Jones had for the song remains the same movie era of Zep, the guitar player is wearing the famous dragon suit attire that Jimmy Page wore during some of the 1977 shows, the singer has the curly blond hair and Percy's hand gestures down pat, drummer looks very much like John Bonham....."

^ This description sounds exactly like what Jason has said his band is NOT going to be, by the way.  Keep in mind that he actually went to see these guys.

Re: Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience

You are right about Led Zepagain Vik. They play here in the southwest. I heard them a year ago in a big street fair and they were ok. I''ll post a review after the show here. We're looking forward to it since it probably will be fun. I hope it is as Jason describes with a combination of video and displays, backed by the music. A celebration of Zep.

Re: Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience

I got better seats over the phone than on the internet for the Philadelphia show on Nov. 6th.  (3rd row and center in the pit)  Row A (1st row pit right side were still available...)

Merriam Theater tickets are handled  by Kimmel Center for Performing Arts @ (215)-893-1999

http://www.ticketmaster.com/seatingchart/16409/3151

I did sign up on the Led Zep Experience site and I thought I'd get notification when tickets went on sale, but I didn't, so I'm very happy to get such great seats.  Ticket agencies were selling seats close to me for $378.00 for 2 seats!  I paid $120 with all the fees etc. for 2 seats.

P.S.   It's Me...that WMMR is my rock station in Philadelphia.  I tried to get them to play Joe years ago, I won't be surprised if they finally show Joe some attention...

To give Jason credit, no mention of any band he is associated with. A paean to his father is the meat, as is the reason for this show.
